"To Be Kind" is very in your face about its tone and attitude, and you either love it or hate it but you know very quickly which one it is. "The Glowing Man" as an album is a stranger thing, much more introspective at the lowest points and yet managing to expand endlessly at the highest points. Some of the most brutal passages of Swans' entire 30+ year run distilled. Just this track alone is completely life-affirming, reality-shaking, mind-bending totally.

Because this latest incarnation of Swans is less about the logic and reason behind music, and more about the sheer feeling of it. The physicality of it. It's not about 'getting' the band, you can't 'get' Swans, just experience it. Swans live (saw them during the Deliquescence release period, after The Glowing Man) is an otherworldly experience, 3 hours of volume and power hitting you constantly, exhausted from standing, nearly hallucinating from the sensory overload. Yes, god damn yes, this goes beyond music. This is a portal to your inner self. Ecstasy!

this song is like a thunderstorm, at 0:00 until 3:47 its like the storm coming, 3:47 to 7:30 its like the first bit of the storm, then at 7:30 it goes into full mode, with thunder, lightning, rain, hail (if you live in Kansas then a tornado). At 11:58 the main storm stops and it stays at light rain, and at 15:00 to 28:51 its just rain. Yes, i made this up on the spot.

This is PHENOMENAL. I always knew that certain Swans tracks really have an hypnotic quality to them, but this one's something special. :)

Hearing this song makes reverent of what loops of notes can do to make a hypnotic experience better.

You hear so many more dynamics in the mix though, its juicy but a little too overstimulating at times.

I started my Swans journey with this song after failing to get into the discography 9 months earlier. Even though every album I've listened to is beautiful in their own way, The Glowing Man (the album and the song) is still my absolute favorite. Every time I hear that intro, I'm being brought back to when I first listened to this before school. I remember when I finished it, I immediately rewound it and listened again. After the second listen, I went to bandcamp and played the whole album 2 times in a row. This album was like an actual drug. I couldn't focus in school, and this music was the only thing I would talk about all week (my friends probably got really tired of me, ngl). After all of this, I did tons of research into the band, made a mental list of every album I wanted to listen to, and then jumped straight into the Swans rabbit hole. Anyways, I would say the song is pretty decent lmao.

@ oops i wasn't trying to be pretentious. i just meant that i'm pretty sure the holy trinity was the actual theme of these albums

It’s not. The Seer is literally about being shown the hideous and pitch black truth of reality and the subsequent confrontation with and denial of God, the bliss of spitting in his face. The last track is called “apostate” for gods (ha ha) sake. To Be Kind is the extremes of emotion. The Glowing Man is begging, pleading with God to answer you, failing, and the things that fill your life in response to his eternal and deliberate silence.
