With the big D batteries this radio almost qualifies as an emergency type radio. Super long battery life would be a must in an extended power failure. Really do like the form factor, the classic design is good. Putting newer technology into this classic design is probably a way of saving money and doing management control(quality).

YAY! I've been looking forward to this. This radio has something that far too many today are missing; an RF gain control. To me an RF gain knob is almost a must have. Thank you so very much for what you do. I love your content and find it very informative.
@HardcoreDXLithuania3 ай бұрын
Gyro antenna has that sound because of some kind of stoppers if you like to call it. So it don't swivels easily around. All the radios like Panasonic RF series were made this way. There's elastic plastic card which "locks" mechanism in place.

No muting/chuffing was a good call, and will likely make potential owners happy. Same with triple conversion. Nice to have all these upgrades in the same classic form factor.

Right? Muting drives me crazy as I'm a tuning knob twister. I love tuning around to see what's out there/what I can pull in, and muting makes that hard to do.

Thanks fore view. Seems that Tecsun keeps in competition against itself by putting out these high end portables like 2200x, 501, 990, etc...

The old Sony portables had good synch detection, that was decades ago. Too bad they are out of the sw portable business. I wonder why Tecsun and Sangean never got it right?
@Mike-ot3yg3 ай бұрын
I can’t compare to the Sony but my Tecsun PL-660 has a very useful synch detection. It is on right now with a weak signal from XEPPM, R. Educacion in MX and is maintaining the lock and noticeably improving the reception.

A comment. This radio design was introduced in 2008 and that makes the case design 16 years old! Considering the estimated price for the new model being very expense, makes one wonder why spending that much on an ancient radio design. My thoughts. Great review, thanks.

Hello Giles! Just tripped over info concerning the price. It seems that this radio will be around €450.- here in Ireland... I still love my old S2000, with all it's weaknesses ( connected to my 42 foot outside longline - do that and the radio is great) I like the simplicity of the s2000 and that it reacts, feels and performs like certain radios in the 60's did!To be honest, it is a ideal radio to slowly work your way in ministeps right up to the 29990's. But to at last get a H-501x radio in a S2000 body will be a clear yes for me. Although, to be honest, I own the 330/680/501 and a whole pile of radios that found their way into my shed through the years - owning the 501 and 680 covers pretty much everything the S2000 lacks. So there will be a lot of discussing with my wife needed to get one.... hope the price will stay or even get down to the €398.- for the S-2000! For that price it will be a great radio!!

I have a question regarding the treble/bass knobs: On my Elite 750 while the treble has a good range to it, rotating the bass knob just seems to make the sound only slightly fuller. I noticed when you swung the radio around that there are now vent holes behind the speaker. Does this help out the bass response range (especially on FM)? Thanks for your review!

Well I have the Eton Elite, and have been enjoying it even with all the deficiencies. But for some reason I desire this new 2200x lol. I think it's the boxy ... kind of retro style it has. Also I like the small fine tuning in place of the vfo. That's my 2 cents! Great Info!

I have the Grundig Satilite 750 version. I checked it and no muting when rolling through the frequency knob. I guess I don't see enough of a difference to make a difference and cause me to replace what I have. If I was looking to buy a new high end radio because I have none, maybe.

Hey Gilles: fellow Quebecer here living not too far from you and waiting for my S-2200x in the next 8 days. Wich inside antenna would be best for the S-2200x please? I live in a second story appartment and i cant put anything outside. My radio room faces West and i was wondering if the GA-800 Active Loop Antenna would be good for me?

With the DSP processing stage is there a reason that it can't have Noise Reduction and Noise Blanker functions like even the cheaper Malahit clones ? As a owner of classic older Icom receivers I like the nostalgic look and familiarity of the classic function controls, I'd do a straight swap with my old R71A LOL

Who should buy this radio? Who is it aimed at? Should a person looking at this also look at older SW radios?
@SRC17113 ай бұрын
How do you mean "the AM is pretty good"? Why not stupendous or astounding or phenomenal or excellent? I will stick with my Qodosens and XHDatas and Sangean PRD4W. The other day I took out the Sangean and tried it with my Sony SRF59. However my XHData D808 is a tad better than those two on MW. The era of Tecsuns and CCranes coming to an end?
@ditto19583 ай бұрын
I’ve been wondering the same, but didn’t know how to say it. This radio is big and expensive. None of the KZbinrs I have found who have received test units seem to be saying “wow” about any aspect of its performance. For Tecsun’s sake, and more important for the sake of SW hobbyists, I hope the 2200x is a success, but I don’t know…

This receiver is very atractive, but I have one curiosity: how it performs on medium wave, compared to the Tecsun pl-990x, above 1300 kHz? All my Tecsun radios are almost deaf on the upper part of medium wave, with two exceptions: the pl-398 and the h501x. Please, could you record a short demo for me? Many thanks in advance!

On both S2000 and Eton 750 ,40 meter amateur band signals would bleed through on the 31 meter broadcast band, when using a good outside antenna. Have you noticed this in the S2200x?

Thank you, I was wondering if this radio might satisfy my desire to own a nice high end base station style radio. Though this appears to be a strong radio that'll meet the wants of many people, there are a few deal killers for me. I want a radio that'll perform solidly under all conditions, so I'll hold out for a more high end radio like a Drake R8B or something like the Drake R8B. I know that a Drake R8B will cost far more money, but it'll perform at the level I want. Keep riding the radio waves and may your signals be strong! 💪👊

Thank you for an excellent review. The S-2200x appears to be a very good radio, and I am considering buying one but waiting to see the price, hoping it's not much over $400. Does this radio not have Bluetooth? Also, I wish Tecsun would get with it and incorporate FM RDS.

I am automatically suspicious of multi band radios because one band always suffers from loss of sensitivity or loss of selectivity !! Either loss can ruin a radio receiver and destroy listening pleasure. All receivers from China usually suffers a loss on the shortwave band or is stone deaf there. American or Japanese built shortwave receivers do not suffer losses on shortwave bands, but China built receivers do ! Most voltage controlled tuners cheaply built in China suffer those losses where variable capacitor tuners usually do not have losses.........
