Danielle and Aleesha come to school hungover, and to help out their hangovers Paul steals ethanol and makes a 'hair of the dog' cocktail to help Danielle feel better. Paul and Bolton see an easy way to make money and start selling the ethanol to other students. Rachel soon uncovers their scam but it’s too late for barely conscious Danielle, who is rushed off to hospital by a frantic Steph.

I just read two Daily Mail articles that said real schoolchildren had actually also drunk ethanol, thanks to this scene! The children of course fell ill and were rushed to hospital, and the schools and the Daily Mail blamed Waterloo Road and the BBC for these copycat incidents, but the comments on the articles supported WR and the BBC, saying that the episode explicitly warned of the dangers of drinking ethanol (the nurse character who attends to Danielle) AND that it was due to the pupils' own LACK OF COMMON SENSE that they did it in the first place!

I know! The Ethanol, a poisonous substance, was kept in the same unlocked cupboard as retort stands and things like that! That chemistry teacher should've been reprimanded for that!

It’s not the science teachers fault? We were trusted with ethanol in school, and the ethanol in this programme was in a cupboard far away from everything else. How was the teacher supposed to know this could happen.

Paul's biggest mistake that endangered a fellow pupil, Danielle. Bolton had the idea of "hair of the dog" but it was Paul, probably reading about it off the internet, who thought that Ethanol was simply drinking alcohol by a different name and thus gave some to Danielle, unwittingly putting her health at extreme risk, if not her life. Worse still, he seems to be under the impression that he's doing nothing wrong when even Bolton's bailing from selling the stuff to more pupils.

Yes all drinking alcohol is ethanol and if they just diluted it more than that and it was pure ethanol they would have been fine. If it wasn’t pure ethanol (which is wasn’t) then it wasn’t the ethanol itself that could cause actual damage but the additives added to make them not drinkable.

@@Alphoric That's it, the additives, they deliberately make it unpleasant, as shown by Paul's, Bolton's and Rachel's reactions to drinking and smelling it. But Danielle had drunk far too much the night before and she guzzled it down like pop in the school lab, like she didn't care.

I seem to recall this got the BBC and Shed Productions in a bit of a pickle with the press and schools. Apparently there were concerns that kids would see this and copy it at their own schools.

This wasnt the kids fault. This was mrs haddock; head of pastoral care. Sees ths girl drunk then drunker leaves her in a closet. These days shed be fired.

@@krishkrish8213 they are teenagers in the roughest and poorest worst school in england st the time. Yeh theu experimented with alcohol; it was actually lack of parental supervision that had them out all night partying (police woulda been out for me) and steph who allowed her to continue drinking (what drunk person wants to stop? Steph knows that) so no i dont believe it was the girls fault. no teen shpuld be able to sneak out and do this; parents let things go way too far.

The School should have to call the police because selling Alcohol Poisoning is a Potential penalty which means It’s A misdemeanor including a fine up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail.

They should not have students to Sale Alcohol poisoning to Minors is a Class A misdemeanor that can result up to one year in jail. Purchase of Alcohol to a Minor; Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor is also a Class A misdemeanor.
