USA was one of the original 17 signors of the Treaty of Metre (notably most of europe didn't sign at the same time the US did... hmm). USA was the one of the driving forces for establishing SI system to replace french metric system. You have the USA to thank... for a world standard metric system instead of many variations around the world. USA has always been pro metric system. Metric system exists through every manufacturing industry in the USA. US medical industry has been metric since 1874. Metric system is the official system of the US government. Metric system is taught in US schools and used by any STEM course / major program. The one major area that people seem to hyper focus in on is miles vs kilometre. Reality is that miles is the international preferred system for measuring long distances EVEN in countries you think of as being purely metric. Why? Because miles is a far better method for measuring distance as a factor of time. In the US, 60 miles is generally understood to take 60 minutes to drive. But this logic is also used in the UK, France, Germany etc. If your country is small, maybe you have no need for this distinction. For example, if you live in the netherlands, I can drive from one side of the country to the other side in 2 hours. But in the US, it takes 3 hours to go from central ohio to northeast ohio (Columbus --> Cleveland). The metric system offers literally zero advantages to measuring road distance. As to the general education of the US in doing conversions to the metric system. It's simply the reality that most people aren't in STEM fields and don't use ANY system as a day to day reference. This isn't any different from a citizen in the UK. If an American wants to know the temperature, they go to their weather app and it states the current temperature as 39F/4C. It gives temperature in both scales. Why do they need to know how to convert to C or from C to F if they aren't in a STEM field? but ask a US chemist or engineer and they will do the conversion for you... no problem. Vast majority of the US engineering sector is purely metric system. USA simply doesn't force a single system down anyone's throat. Americans don't consider limited knowledge in one system a measure of one's intelligence.
