@@haroldbeauchamp3770 oh yea, I'm fully aware of that + getting a transmission cooler and a scangauge to keep an eye on the temps. What gets me is that Subaru of America says its a lifetime fluid, yet Subaru of Canada says to change it at about 50k miles, and in Japan, it's about 25k miles.

Just proves that although a Subaru can’t do everything a Toyota 4Runner could do, there’s still a lot of places it can get to. Throughout the entire trip, we were the only group with AWD Crossover/unibody SUVs. There were 3 other large groups. One was 100% Jeep Wrangler, another one was a mix of Jeeps, FJ cruisers, F-150s. One of them was a group of Wranglers with a lone Subaru Forester that was completely stock (that was the only anomaly). You and Harold have a good conversation going. Not only does Subaru USA say their fluid is lifetime, but the normally aspirated models don’t have a CVT cooler like the Japanese models. So... if Subaru of Japan has an external transcooler and recommends CVT fluid changeout every 24k miles in “severe” (or shall I say normal) driving conditions (because driving in traffic is considered severe to the hand book). Then 24K should be the CVT fluid change outs. Also, Scangauge II’s are so awesome! That’s how Nick was able to tell that his Subaru Ascent was at 225F. Still a relatively normal temp. The fluid doesn’t start to break down until about 230-240F. That’s what regular trans fluid is specced for. The yellow HT-CVT fluid may be specced to handle more abuse. My Honda has Green high stress trans fluid.

The more I watched your videos, the more I thought about what kind of car I should drive to these tough trails, the most compact car, also good for daily driving. The passport and Subaru look right. About the RTT, Adventurer Regular is right one for carry, compact and light weight. The trailer, I love the bring trailer, more supplier can carry, more freedom to your movement, but have to cross my fingers, hope the guys did not lose any screws. The vibration of the trailer is too great during the whole trip, and it is difficult to avoid accidents.

11:54 is an excellent example of why torque converters are simply better than clutches for off roading. Torque converters multiply torque while a clutch only reduces torque. Much easier to preload the drivetrain with torque as well for slowly crawling over an obstacle and makes 2 foot driving with gas/brake dramatically easier. Don't get me wrong, I love manuals, but I learned a while back that an auto off road is just more capable especially when shifting and maintaining wheel spin up an obstacle.

Hi there Jon, I have been on sections of that trail only on my dirt bikes and dual sports. In your opinion could a 2wd navigate the entire length of it? I would not be taking any nasty off shoots. I remember a lot of bail outs on some of the sections near the volcanic formations.

I’m worried about the soft sand section west of the travelers monument. I heated of 2WD’s getting stuck there. As far as the cinder area. We actually got a Chevy Silverado with a rear LSD to the cinder mines.
@robertlotstein96703 жыл бұрын
From my own personal experience of 15+ years offroad I would say YES. A LSD or locker would be very nice to have, but it could be done 2wd/open but you would have to pick your line much more carefully. Speaking of which your line should be one that keeps at least the rear tires on the ground as much as possible, while avoiding objects with the tender bits in the center of your vehicle. Your gonna need to maintain a little bit of momentum (not Wide Open) because if you stop especially on sand uphill your screwed. Traction boards + other recovery gear would be great. Going with a group of other vehicles would be better. I go exploring with my 93 Dodge dakota with a rear LSD and 32" tires and 95% of the time I'm in RWD, only using 4lo if I need to creepy crawl over a technical rockpile.
@mikaeld.4813 жыл бұрын
During the Water crossing.. I never heard you ask or mention to anyone if they had diff breathers? Because most likely most of those vehicles did not and consequently they would have sucked water into the differentials.Those that did not have diff breathers might want to do you a Diff Oil service after this trip.

Hi Jon! I didn't (obviously) go on the trip, but I really enjoy watching you all have fun on the trail. Great video and great job! All the vehicles looked like they did well! Did the Lexus get fixed on the trail or need a tow back? Hey, wanted to ask you... I just turned 15K on my Passport. The trans is developing a hard/lousy shift 4-5 gear (around 35mph)... under light acceleration? Did yours ever exhibit this?
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
The Lexus GX needed to be towed back to Los Angeles unfortunately. Btw, he wasn’t the Lexus that was in the split screen comparison, it was another white Lexus. From what I hear from others is that it was showing some abnormal symptoms while on the drive out, so always a good idea to not chance it if somethings not right. As far as the hard shifts from 4th to 5th, you must be very observant because I believe the 5th gear is the dog clutch. I’m not super mechanically inclined, and I don’t know how to decipher all this, but here’s some info: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_9HP_transmission
@Ram142503 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thanks Jon.. Yeah, it is the "dog clutch" shift and I believe 7-8 is too... but it's just gotten herky jerky unless I drive aggressively with it. I'm thinking of just doing a fluid change. I can get the Honda 3.1 for just a little over $22 / quart... so it's not horrible.

If you had the choice, would you go 2021 Passport or 2022 Outback Wilderness?
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I use to drive a 2015 Forester XT and now a Passport, so you could probably guess my answer. On paper, the Outback wilderness has one advantage, which is the 9.5" of ground clearance vs. the Passports 8.1". Modified the Subarus are capping off at 10.5" at the rear diff, the Passport is capping off around 12". If someone is looking to LEASE an adventure mobile (and is unwilling to modify), the Outback wilderness makes alot of sense. Even with more capability, 8.1" of ground clearance will hold the Passport back. If someone is looking to BUY and is willing to modify, the Passport is better in every way. Here's a list of pros and cons SUBARU OUTBACK WILDERNESS PROS -9.5 inches of ground clearance -Car like handling -Low center of gravity -Turbo engine has good mid ranged power -Tremendous aftermarket support (but no aftermarket transmission, which is the main weakness) CONS -CVT does not allow for crawl capability, even with the improved CVT ratios. Momentum Offroader -Suspension components prone to failure (bushings fail, sway bar endlinks and brackets break) -CVT failures are common when they are taken offroad -Multilink rear suspension decreases minimum ground clearance when lifted. Net ground clearance is low. -Even with 9.5" of ground clearance, has less approach and departure angle. HONDA PASSPORT PROS -20.4 crawl ratio allows for slow speed crawling -Strong engine, off the line performance -Good maximum ground clearance -Responds to modifications very well. True net ground clearance when lifted. -Twin clutch rear differential, it's like having 2 AWD systems. -Very tough suspension components CONS -Does NOT handle like a crossover. It handles like something between a Car and a Truck. -Less aftermarket support. No springs or struts as of yet. -Can't think of anything else.

I'll be watching more of your vids because your channel has a lot of great information regarding Passport mods. @JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@@Thomas-fk6ep There's a lot of other choices as well. A Jeep Wranger JL and Gladiator JT handle so much better than previous generations. Handles onroad better than a Toyota equivalent. These newer model jeeps are now daily driveable. Then there's the new Nissan Pathfinder which is very very very similar to the Passport. Right down to the ZF9 gransmission and twin clutch rear differential. Since you said you aren't interested in climbing any crazy hills, then something like a Kia Sorrento/Telluride may work. I'd just recommend staying away from a CVT or Dual clutch transmission. Get something with a tried and true automatic transmission.

It's a 2017 Black Edition. It's a 6 speed. I have a 2 inch Traxda lift front and back, with 265/60R18 Falken Wildpeak AT3W.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring is there a viable hybrid vehicle option for overland. I see a lot of hybrid SUVs but none really equip for off-road. I like the fuel savings and torque but add lift and Uber under armor wheels and tires does that defeat any fuel advantage and or affect the safety feature setup i.e collision avoidance etc on-road. So maybe the ? is can one vehicle do both or three things: fuel efficient >30 mpg, daily driver and overland???

@jeffham40883 жыл бұрын
Just did this trail a week ago - would definitely recommend airing down.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty unanimous that airing down is all benefit and has no disadvantages (well, maybe if you don't have enough sidewall to compensate).
@KTMcaptain3 жыл бұрын
air down, your tooth fillings will thank you. Unless you have very tight ground clearance issues or need better fuel economy, airing down protects your tires, your rims, your suspension components, your payload, and your sanity.

You only use your phone and gopros to record?
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. I believe you need a special permit to video record with heavier camera equipment, in the Mojave national preserve. I fall in under the low impact filming category: “Low-Impact Filming “Low-impact filming’ is defined as outdoor filming activities in areas open to the public, except areas managed as wilderness, involving five people or fewer and equipment that will be carried at all times, except for small tripods used to hold cameras. Those participating in low-impact filming activities do not need a permit and are not required to contact the park in advance. If low-impact filmers have questions about areas where they want to film, they should contact us. We remind videographers, filmers, producers, directors, news, and other staff associated with filming that rules and regulations that apply to all park visitors, including park hours and closed areas, still apply to filming activities even if a permit is not required. Check with us for more information on closures, sensitive resources, and other safety tips.”
