@@AspireDMT it would be pretty rough for it to even make it to the top of the staircase. Is that even possible? Funny, my 2008 Ford Escape, with a 4 speed auto, and very basic AWS system (front biased, no "modes"), used to go up steep hills no problem. If it was steep enough, it would start spinning the tires before slipping the converter. It didn't have particularly low gearing either, being a 4 speed. Maybe it has less to do with electronics and/or magic, and more to do with how tight the torque converter is? I have a 2023 OBW now. Haven't had the opportunity to take it up any steep hills yet, but I will say that xmode 2 is pretty amazing in the snow. Very sure footed.

50% of the Subaru owners I know have had transmission replacements. That’s not an exaggeration.
@JonDZ_Adventuring7 күн бұрын
@@milesb4231 it’s the unfortunate truth for those that take them off-road. It will greatly speed up the process of failure. Most geared transmissions really don’t have a reason to fail mechanically. Automatic Subaru transmissions made by Jatco (the Subaru lineartronic is of Jatco design btw) can also fail, but they’re also known to get 400K+ miles. This would be unheard of for any non Toyota CVT transmission, including Honda. The Toyota CVT has a real 1st gear.

Even if you maintain the CVT the best you can, good luck making the unit last 100k mi. Then replacing one costs the value of vehicle. Talking from experience. CVT was the one cheap and weak design that killed Subaru reliability. Only marketing can fix it.
@JonDZ_Adventuring10 күн бұрын
@@gregmazz marketing and consumer reports naming Subaru the #1 reliable brand. BUT… as you pointed out, there has never been a CVT Subaru on a “vehicle most likely to hit 200K miles” list. My FXT made it to 62K before CVT failure. My friends and fellow adventurers are having similar failures, the Turbo TR690HT models averaging 100K miles before failure and Naturally aspirated TR580 models lasting between 150-200K miles. But of course, the ones that are pushed are going to die much sooner.

@JonDZ_Adventuring What a change in philosophy. These cars used to be the best engineered mountain goats on the road plus real tools of savings and serviceability. What a shame Subaru to now sell 60 to 100k mi gadgets, that they themselves - Subaru of America and Subaru dealers - admit to have zero dollar value once the planned obsolescence CVT is gone. Even if the vast majority of users drive tar babies on flat, the emerging transmission issue is catching up to a new standard of "80% of Subaru produced are still in the junkyard".

I live at over 10,000 feet and have a 2019 subaru crosstrek that has always handled steep and icy hills like a dream. I haven't done any off-roading with it because it is my only vehicle and I'm not risking anything happening to it. As far as practicality goes, I couldn't imagine driving anything else up here that's not a 4x4. With X mode I haven't really been 'stuck' anywhere yet. The only complaint I have is how shitty the acceleration is, especially while moving when I want to pass someone. It's a very underpowered engine, or as I like to call it "naturally exasperated." Also not being able to tow even small trailers kind of sucks. But tbh, I paid this car off and I'll probably keep driving it until my nephew turns 16 and I give it to him. It's been reliable, dependable, and safe, and that's really all I am after in a vehicle.
@JonDZ_Adventuring10 күн бұрын
@@somethingbig3797 cool. How many miles do you have now? I have a 2019 (well Honda) with 177k miles. It’s been ultra reliable and modified from the start. Taking a vehicle off-road will really speed up the aging process. My 2015 FXT that I took offroad only lasted 62k miles on much much lighter terrain. I couldn’t imagine it driving up the obstacle you see here.
@somethingbig379710 күн бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I only have 42k miles because I spent from 2020 to early 2024 working from home. Now that I have a new job, I drive about 62 miles a day. I definitely wouldn't take my Subaru up these types of steep rocky inclines. If anything, I'd buy an old 4x4 truck or Jeep as a second vehicle. I have considered buying one specifically for hauling and camping. I think the most taxing thing I've had to do was get through about 6 inches of fresh snow on a steep incline, and as long as the Subaru handles stuff like that which is common up here, that's really all I have to worry about for my drives.

This is the beginning, so hang on tight, things aren’t going to happen overnight! Hopefully Honda can help with Nissan cvts or just replaced with traditional transmission. I think Honda will take Armada platform for body on frame. That would help Honda “off-road” category, which would dramatically boost sells for Honda and sells for Nissan Armada platform. I leased a EV Nissan ariya. Miss my Honda pilot. Just happy it’s a LEASE! 😂

I don't know Jon. Been through a lot of mergers (3 different during my tenure) with Chrysler over the years. I'm no longer there but with a family owned automaker. Chrysler was great before mergers started... then I Hated it. It RARELY is a positive for an automaker and the public. It's all about saving money... but with the management suffles and continual direction changes and fighting over who's product is "more efficient" (not in durability, but in $$$)... It's just not good. I actually very disappointed to hear the merger potential. Honda's durability isn't what it once was... but it's still better than many now. With our luck, everything will have Nissan CVT's! LOL. I know they are abandoning the CVT thing (thank Goodness).

You talk shit about EV but they are the future. Honda has been lagging in this dept and would have no reason to merge with Nissan or Mitsubishi if this was not the case. While all these companies can make a EV they also can't make a cheap EV. China can. This merge is 100 percent to try to stay alive against China. Add in a nut bar trump slapping tariffs on anything that is not Tesla, small more affordable EVs that sell better worldwide might be the play.
@JonDZ_Adventuring16 күн бұрын
That was the thing to say 4 years ago, but the reality is that the world has come to the realization that pure EVs are NOT the future. Ram will be the first to offer the next gen EV in their "Ram Charger Truck". They include a gasoline engine that has the sole purpose of recharging at 130 KW (the gas engine is not connected to the drive train), a smaller battery pack is needed and it can get 690 miles range if. It's still a plug in if needed. YES, EV is the future, but how it's going to be done, and the Chinese EV company BYD was the first to roll this out.
