I have the ecoboost 3.5 in my 2013 Platinum. Just got back from a trip along the west coast of Michigan with just passengers and luggage and I averaged 19.4mpg staying on 2 lane roads going through towns. I wonder how much better the diesel would be and how long till you make up that 4k price difference. Its probably great, but is it really worth it, especially since the ecoboost will get up and go so well.

$4000 for the engine upgrade is a bargain compared to your northern neighbours. Just got off Ford Canada website and the build sheet showed a horrendous $9000 upgrade!

The Ecoboost can kick down to a lower gear as it has a higher redline. The diesel won't pull above 3500 so it has to stay in higher gears. Thankfully it isn't a manual transmission or somebody would probably shift down too far and scatter their new engine all over the pavement.

Can you get diesel in the sport package??????? But I think 2.7 ecco boost would be better and cheaper .

Once ford takes their head out their ass and realizes that they can do much more sales if they offer the damn diesel on basic tradesmen models then we can probably all afford one

I believe in ford, as they are the only U.S. auto company to not go bankrupt. They are doing something right. With that being said, I do believe the cams should have been gear driven like durable long lasting diesels have been since their creation. Even if they needed cam phasers to adjust cam timing, gears would have been better.

All the numbers (engine and capacities) are basically the same as the gas option. If your buying to tow (even lighter loads) sounds like the super duty is still the better option. If not towing and you want comfort of f150 vs super duty, sounds like gas is still the winner.
@PatrickRich6 жыл бұрын
its doesn't downshift aggressively because there are fewer revs to play with and the power band is low anyway...it wouldn't make sense to aggressively downshift when power comes on at 1700 and tapers off by 3500...no reason to spool up revs like the gas engine.

So, wouldn't it make sense to offer the diesel in work trucks? Boy manufacturers sure are making it difficult to get diesels in the light duty diesel market. I wonder if it's a VM motori engine.

Well as the old saying states, if you see a British car with no oil underneath them, you can bet there's no oil in them.

I’ve said it before, but these half ton diesels are just not impressive. The price premium, added maintenance costs, and DEF fluid make the fuel economy start to seem not worth the premiums. Power wise the gas trucks are in another league. I’m not just talking about the ford all this applies to the eco diesel as well. Many reviewers have pointed out, while towing a mild load, that their foots are planted to the floor and are slowing down up the hill. That’s not confidence inspiring and quite unsettling. The 3.5L is the better towing motor, with more peak and average torque, and 125 more hp to give you passing power and the ability to maintain the speed limit. People are so obsessed with fuel economy nowadays that they’re jaded, to the extent that they’ll buy a more expensive vehicle with higher running costs, less capability, power, and torque. Crazy
@grandemage6 жыл бұрын
Big mistake for ford to not offer the motor in the XLT/XTR models. But at least fleet buyers can get it there. Guess people will have to harass their fleet managers at work if they want the cheaper model lol :P
@hankypalanky57546 жыл бұрын
GrandeMage it's strategy I'm sure... Ford more than likely purchases these motors directly from JLR.. hence the huge price premium. Then opening up the diesel option to all consumers for the lower from will eat up the demand for the gas engines which are made by the UAW Ford... Ford don't want to get the union grease monkeys mad

Hanky Palanky I agree with your theory but I also believe that Ford has decided to release this powerstroke in limited quantities to work out potential issues with this engine before it reaches the whole line from xl to platinum trims. It makes sense that the people who buy lariat and above will go back to the dealerships for all of the regular maintenance services where the techs can go over and find parts that need revisions.

@alexsmba6 жыл бұрын
Calm down ladies. This isn’t a regular rubber belt like a serpentine belt. It has metal reinforcement and teeth. Did you know chains stretch and need replacing when the tensioner starts to go? Did you know chains can cost 3-4 X more than a belt to replace?
@4gauge106 жыл бұрын
Alex Stelling Listen LGBT reject,did you know that ALL diesel engines use GEAR DRIVEN valve trains in them?,know why?,its because of the incredable stress of a engine that has 18-to-1,20-to-1 levels of compression,no belt or CHAIN will survive that for 500,000 miles and that's just for starters.

Totally respect that opinion. This engine wasn’t meant to be impressive, though. It was meant to meet EPA regulations in a different package, that the US has yet to accept the way Europe has. This engine has been available in Europe for years, as well as diesel engines in general, which are on average 20-30% more powerful (per unit displacement) as well as 20-30% more efficient than gasoline engines (per unit displacement). It’s meant to achieve what’s already available, just able to do it on less gallons of fuel. That being said, I don’t know that that’s achieved in full potential, but... it is 2.4 litres less displacement than my 23 mpg 06 Lariat (3.55 axle, 2wd, supercab) and a half-litre less than my 29 mpg 2015 Lariat (3.15 axle, 2wd, supercrew). But I’m still excited to try one next model year. (Edit: couldn’t spell “it’s” correctly the first time)

Overinflated. 4 grand more for a motor that doesn't have a record on reliability. We all remember the time these EcoBoost engins were misfiring when they first came out. A partnership with range rover isn't reassuring. They depreciate for a reason because of cost reliability is thrown out the window.

Ford really messed up with this motor, number 1 a diesel is known for torque well this one falls short in there 5 motor lineup, number 2 a diesel is known for longevity well with the timing belt it falls short again, number 3 it is not available in the work truck XL or XLT Ford wants big money Lariat or higher, number 4 at $4,000 above the 2.7 cost is to high. I will take the 5.0. Ford can keep this motor on the pallet.

Andy Hass I think they make more engines to fit different buyers. Tho in all honesty all truck companies could cut loose their V6 engines.
@crazyhass846 жыл бұрын
Eric Fox no shit Sherlock. My pt is Ford just spends money like they aren't drowning in debt. They don't need more than 3 engines. 6 engines shows they don't know what they r doing. 3.5. Then the 2.7 because the 3.5 sucked on mpg. Then the 3.3 because they spent way to much on the 2.7 and 3.5 so they have to over charge and need a cheap engine. Then the crazy expensive diesel because they can't meet co2 regulations with gas engines... As for v6. R u an idiot? 30% of ram 1500 sales r the v6. Many truck buyers love it. Does what they need for 20k less than a ford...
