We think the F-150 will continue to ride high in 2018. With styling tweaks and a new 2.7L EcoBoost, we decided to take the popular pickup for a road test.

I'm so so glad MotorWeek is still running strong. I used to watch it with my father 20 years ago.. Gives me that great memory every time! Also, thanks for a great review of the F150. Imo,it will still be the best looking and already proven better performing truck than the 19 Ram and Gm's For that guy that criticized us Americans. Have you been overseas with so many awful running vehicles spewing oil everywhere and getting worse mileage than a full size pick-up??

I am in awe at this trucks performance... 0-60 in less than 6 seconds braking in just over 100 feet? what the hell this is better performance than lighter cars... all this from a tiny 2.7 with 24mpg from dam truck...just wow

Just got one myself, performance is pretty damned impressive but fuel mileage...well it's decent but not as advertised. Getting 16-17 city so far, have not managed 20 on the Interstate yet. Still much better than my old 5.4, but also the first vehicle I've owned that hasn't hit its EPA numbers.

@@jldude84 yeah I am on winter gas, temps around 10-25, so hoping it improves some. My 5.4 was 12.5-13.5 city in same conditions. Mine is a 4x4 Super Crew.

Not sure if you guys at MW are aware but a regular cab xl sport with 5.0 10spd and 3.55 rear end will run a high 13 1/4 mile.

Most 2018+ F-150s (save for the base 3.3 NA V6) will run 13.99 or faster in the right conditions. Even a crew cab with the 2.7 Ecoboost is capable of breaking 13s at or below sea level in cold, dry weather. I have a Supercab 2.7 10 spd with the 3.73 rear and it pulls 5.8 to 60 on 87 octane. The factory knock sensors near their limits on 87 so I’m gonna try 93 now that it’s getting colder to see if I can crack a 5.7 or faster. I have already put some 93 in the tank to start flushing out the 87.

The best part is if you live in a state where they put road salt down in winter this truck won't rust, I've owned two Dodge trucks and driving in salt after 4 years it was rusty(I even washed and waxed them on every free day), The guy who bought my Dodge I see him driving it around it looks like swiss cheese.

Crazy right? With performance numbers like that, I guess it was just another reason why Ford is canceling their sedans(minus the Mustang). Although I wish it wasn't so.......they still need some performance sedans in my book, but I guess new vehicle buyers don't agree with me......We'll see what happens if gas ever hits $5 again!

You thinking these trucks are good looking is a great compliment, I have always thought the most beautiful automobiles were designed by the Britts, E Jags as well as the F Types, Aston Martins, AC’s, old MG’s and Triumphs, McLarens. This is why I love my 2.7l 2015 f150, it might not have the 10 speed or extra 25ft lb torque but it sure does take off. You can indeed burn rubber on 18" rims at over 35mph. Excellent braking distance, less body roll with aluminum being light weight. Heavy steel componets for from frame to engine sits down low so your not top heavy. With so much power at the start from 0-60 that is half the fun since you can feel the rush at legal speeds. Most vehicles get the power like a v8 but you have to get to 55mph or faster.

Far cry from my 1989, 2003, and 2007 Ford trucks I've owned over the years. The 2.7 shames the big 5.4L my 2003 Expedition had... mind you, I never once felt it was lacking in power. My 1989 F150 was a 4x2 short bed reg cab with a 5.0. Awesome looking and driving truck but 14-18mpg is not acceptable with 3 buck gas these days

I love my 2018 STX 2.7. It’s a Supercab 4WD with 3.73s. 0-60 in 5.7 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.1 @ 98 with room for improvement, and 20+ mpg on the highway if I’m nice to it. It handles better than a lot of older cars and stops on a dime. When it’s time to remind myself it’s a truck, it’ll tow and haul anything I throw at it with ease. It got almost 13 mpg towing a beat up old trailer with a 2003 Mach 1 on it down the highway at 65-70 mph last week. 2018-2022 F-150s are the best trucks in their segment hands down.

Yea well the ugly truth is you can have eco or boost but not both. There are plenty of videos on this. Also keep in mind that direct injection has it's own problems such as carbon build up on the valves.
@jasonroberts9357
@jasonroberts9357 6 жыл бұрын
+Bill Blair I used to say the same, but there are many reports of owners getting 27 + MPG on the highway. I'm sure they have to baby it a bit to get those numbers, but most people are quoting around 21 MPG average. I'm good with those numbers numbers if you can hit 0-60 in the mid 5 sec. range in full sized pickup! Also interested to see how the 2.7 eco holds up, but there are plenty of 3.5(later models) eco's holding up just fine......As to the carbon build up, Ford now gives the 2.7 dual injection, port and direct, which solves the carbon build up problem......

The 2.7 is an impressive motor. A closed-deck, very strong block design and they didn't cheap out on materials. Full of clever features. (When I still had one of the boxy Ford Escapes, I daydreamed of doing a 2.7 Ecoboost swap in it and making a Ford Macan. Assuming I had won the lottery or something, ya know.) I feel a little more concerned about the 3.5 though they've been around long enough, I haven't heard of a ton of problems with them.
@dewrus2153
@dewrus2153 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill-I hear you about direct injection. Ford has focused on this issue and is implementing dual injection which combines direct and port. The problem with direct is that gasoline is a solvent that actually helps keep the valves clean but in direct injection, no fuel passes over the valves to keep them clean...hence the buildup. Dual injection puts fuel in the cylinder directly and through ports so fuel does still pass over the valve...leading to less buildup on modern versions of DI engines.

Yes indeed, we have had some great designs in the past, my favourite is the E type coupe; not hard too like! And as you mention McLaren are at the forefront of design and technology. I particularly like the F150 and the Raptor is a fantastic piece of machinery that I’d like to own if my lottery numbers came up! The Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustangs are handsome powerful well designed cars also. A nice looking truck you have there!

Why do reviewers not track test the mighty 5.0 Coyote V8? It has roughly 80hp more to the wheels than the previous 5.0 V8 mated to the 6 Speed. The V8 screams when you hit the gas. 395 HP / 400 Torque. 2018 V8 is legendary.
@kercmerk
@kercmerk 6 жыл бұрын
Because both the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoosts are quicker than the V8. Not to mention, out-tows with better fuel economy.
@mr.unorthodox3368
@mr.unorthodox3368 6 жыл бұрын
kercmerk Fail - the 2.7 doesnt come close to the 5.0 in 0-60 times when you claim "quick". The 3.5 (regular) has a quicker 0-60 time by half a second better than the 5.0. 5.9 versus 5.5 by Ford. Your misinformed sir. Also, the 5.0 towing capacity is 7000 lbs. The 2.7 is only 5000. Lastly the 3.5 (regular) and 5.0 are close to the same quarter mile times. the 5.0 has an amazing sound and gets me 22 mpg on the highway. you should YT the guys who actually did a DYNO test on the 2017 5.0 vs 2018 5.0. the new 5.0 fuel injectors and 10 speed plus aluminum weight savings gives the 5.0 80 MORE HORSEPOWER to the WHEELS than last years model. Both 3.5 engines are great. 5.0 has better sound period.

Just built one of these on Ford's website and was able to keep it a hair under $50 for a crew-cab with 2.7 XLT with Sync, sport appearance package, power group, and panoramic roof. I would have to keep the damn thing for at least two decades to justify that expense. That is a lot of money for a truck.

I know. Crew would be needed because of kids. I also need the power package since my wife is short and was in an accident a few years back and now has major issues with mobility. If Ford were to build a 100% fully electric F-150; it will be game over for ALL it's competition. The instant torque, range , reliability, toughness and extremely low maintenance of an F-150 with electric powertrain--- would solidify Ford in the No.1 spot for another 35 years.

Please Ford, sick and tired of waiting. Would like 4wd this time with more power towards the rear like 80/20 rear/front wheel drive. Keep towing ability and give it mild off road ability but with a focus for street with more suited street rubber and brakes. Need a modern day street pickup. Especially for work. Oddly I use the lightning all the time for work.

This is the number one selling vehicle in the United States. Not number one selling truck. Number one selling vehicle. Only, I wish people would drive them more responsibility. I find the owners get a boner and drive reckless and tailgate and all these things.

I rented a 3.3 v6 with the 6 speed. It was terrible. Not enough power unless you are willing to go above 4000 rpm constantly.

Maybe because it was the 3.3L V6. You want power? Ecoboost or the 5.0

You've never heard about cam phaser problems or spark plugs fusing to the block then have you? 5.4 Triton motor is easily one of the worst v8s ever made. Chevy is the best v8 producer in the world. Ford fans like the taste of shit in their mouths! The only problem with the 3.8 series 2 is the LIM gaskets. It doesn't matter because Toyota is the best.

And this is why nobody can really afford a new pickup. $29k BASE PRICE? I dont care what motor you put in there, or how many dumbass sensors and cameras you throw at it, no truck is worth that asking price at the base level. Thats a $18k truck, all day.

If you like the hideous looks I guess you are ok to get this aluminum foil tragedy
@gpaje

You realize the Silverado will switch to a lot more aluminum in 2019, with the doors and tail gate going aluminum, along with the hood which has been aluminum. Only the fenders and bed will remain steel. The F150 still offers a V8, it's just the 3.5L is more powerful and offers 13,000 lbs towing while 0-60 in less than 6 seconds. There is no V8 powered truck that matches that. In fact, the smaller 2.7L Ecoboost will out accelerate the Hemi 5.7L Ram.

This aluminum foil tragedy is the only half ton truck to get 5 star crash rating and an IIHS top safety pick. But if you'd rather drive one of those steel trucks, enjoy your free leg amputation. Dumbass.
