Great stuff Kevin! The drone handling worked really well whether by design or not. The image anything but static as it seemed to respond to the swell of it's own accord (the best way I can describe it). Actually some of the best open ocean drone footage I have seen on any of these channels. I appreciate your simple, unvarnished, on camera presence; whether happy and excited to be "taking departure" a bit frustrated with the calms, hot, and weary of the salt. Enjoyed the star/planet shot and calculation sequence even while I was hatin' ya for it! Damn skills! Would I could do better than a huge thanks for sharing your skills and experience but I am busy draining my accounts for my own big enginless adventure come April.Have a wonderful Christmas and exciting New Years!Chris aboard Tachi IIPC 25 #16

Thanks Chris! Yes, I bought the Splash Drone because it can take off and land from the water, and I didn't want to test my piloting skills launching and landing a drone on a sailboat underway. So in this way it has been brilliant--but a lot of headaches too. The camera gimbal has malfunctioned forcing me to buy a new camera for it, and the drone is not yet five months old. Hopefully the new camera will last longer so I can develop my photography (and flying) skills with it. Engineless adventure come April? Well may you have fair winds, and Merry Christmas!

I hope to be able to be ready for a crossing to Hawaii come April, a small window given my list. I do have a less ambitious Plan B if I am not satisfied with the prep. Spent this last season working on my solo, no engine skills and assessing my fitness for it. Found it suits me. Props for thinking that an ocean is the place to learn to fly a drone - you are a mans’s man! You may want to turn down the video compression on the drone camera as you are getting a lot of artifacts.

Yes, it was a bit of a steep learning curve ... not sure what video compression is, but that camera died so I had to purchase a new one. At least the new camera appears much improved over the old one, we'll see if it lasts a little longer ...
@jcliffelam
@jcliffelam 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, video compression is how much storage space the video takes up on the memory chip. If you are recording (for example) 30 minutes of video on a 1G chip, then your compression is X. If you record 60 minutes then your compression is 2X and so forth. The higher the compression, the lower the quality of the video. Low quality video often has big "flat" spots where the blue sky or green water has no texture. If you have a good DSLR you may have seen "RAW" files. They are the uncompressed photo's. You will find that RAW pictures are 3x-4x the size of a high quality JPEG.

Generally any cleaning that requires fresh water will be kept to a minimum since I do not have a desalinator. Otherwise, in light conditions I will take some time to tidy up a bit, especially after a spell of rough weather when the cabin is typically a mess. Also do any urgent repairs then.

Hi Richard, I may do a video on this. Presently it is a 2.3K price tag, as I just had to buy a new camera for it--the old one got water in it and died, Swell Pro refused to replace it so I had to buy a new one. I have not had any more problems with flying, but then I haven't flown in a while since it had no camera. The new camera does look significantly improved over the old one, I can say. I bought this drone specifically to get sailing footage, as taking off and landing from a sailboat seemed rather tricky, better to do it from the water, away from the boat. And Swell Pro is the only game in town, so ...

How long will it take you to turn your boat around to recover the drone in such calm conditions... Can you manage with the sculling oar? Great videos.... Thank you for sharing
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 6 жыл бұрын
Since the drone was only airborne for about fifteen minutes, it was only about half a mile away, so I turned the boat around on a reciprocal course and sailed approx. fifteen minutes before I spotted it. The sculling oar is generally of little use on the wide ocean because of the swell-- enough to rip the oar right out of your hands at times-- and if there is any wind sailing is almost always faster and easier.

Kevin, In the previous issue you mentioned heaving too one night. When you do that, do you just drop and secure the sails and drift? Or do you toss out a sea anchor or drogue?

Looks like I'm gonna do a vid on that sometime ... I heave-to with just the mainsail, usually triple-reefed in gale conditions, and the tiller just slightly down. She will fore-reach at about 2 knots, approx. 70 degrees from the wind.

When you're next at anchor, I want you to do some flight drills. Completely ignore the video system, cover the screen you don't need the distraction. All of these drills are line of sight LOS. Start with a very large Circle concentrate on going forward and not behind yourself. Clockwise or counterclockwise it doesn't matter. Do that for 3 or 4 full battery packs then start making the circle smaller, then figure eights.
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I take it you are a drone pilot? I've done some practicing at anchor, but I need more. The most confusing thing is which way the drone is pointing--it is symmetrical--so you have to just watch which way it moves when you move the joystick. OK, I will try circles--figure eights is definitely advanced.

There's lots of ways to do it. I outlined my approach in a vid called "What it cost to sail for one year"

I can't even watch the other sailing videos with hearing them talk all about their engine problems or they brag about trusting the great engine, so they only use the sails when it's easy. Full on.......training wheels........then seeing the auto pilot set up with GPS tracking. Where are the airplane tickets? Watch a sailing movie. Virtual reality sailboat glasses. Just sit in a chair and ask Alexa if she thinks your fat? Or drop Alexa into the goldfish tank and ask her to explain what happened to the gold....?go fish. Mental prime for a man is 60. Time to fish still exists if we can get away from the still. Engines on boats came around about the 1920s. Then they used to get on way offshore wrecks that clam draggers hung up their nets on and knew the coordinates. And those coordinates were very secret information. Wrecks that had never been fished before, exotic species all around. Flounder as big as a throw rug called door mats before ww2. 2x3 feet common. Seining was legal. You could walk a seining net into the surf and pull it up and fill 3, 5 gallon buckets with small fish and eels.

You're still going to get sprayed with salt even if you manage to clean up with fresh water. I don't understand the logic. Where is the crash and rescue footage? You know that's what everyone wanted to see.

Well, you're still going to get sweaty again even if you take a shower, but people still do it for some reason ...

But you won't smell like ass any more, that doesn't answer the question.
