As he's saying 'canadians are super polite' someone is on their horn lol I left Toronto and moved to Atlanta 3 years ago and never looked back. My life is a lot better and I am much happier in Atlanta and the most important thing, I can afford a beautiful house in a great neighborhood on a nice piece of land. I finally have opportunities in life! In Toronto I could not even afford a shoebox outside of the city. Plus, my social life is much better in Atlanta. People are much friendlier and more open. Saying that Canadians are nice is a big myth (lived in Toronto for 12 years so I can make this statement). Maybe everyone sounds nice but in reality no one gives a shit about you and it is just a fake play. People in Toronto are so reserved and stand-offish and me being born in Serbia, Europe and knowing my entire neighborhood, Canadian way of life seemed so pathetic to me. People in the elevator dont say anything, people dont know their closest neighbor, everyone is self-centered etc. I think weather and climate plays a role in this but overall it was just weird culture in my opinion. Not to mention high taxes... If you want to have fairly safe and mediocre life Canada is great, if you want to dream big and achieve success look elsewhere...

I left Canada 20 years ago. I could never move back because the healthcare system is good but not great, there are better. The taxes are soul crushing. There isn’t any opportunity for people who are wealth creators. The people who live in Canada tend to have a very narrow minded world view, they really don’t seem to get how life works beyond the boundaries of their own village. Think Little Britain but with a Canadian accent.

Canada's democracy is fundamentally broken. Southern Ontario to Southern Quebec have more than 50% of the country's population and set policies that are unrealistic for the rest of the country that deals with different climate and challenges. There's a totally broken democratic system in two major dimensions: rural vs dense urban populations and central vs western Canada. Frankly, I've given up on Canada as a business friendly place.... It's a protected market across many goods and services, and Canadian consumers suffer with high costs of living on top of the high income and property taxes. Telecom, dairy, pork,poultry, even upholstered furniture are all.protected markets that Canadians pay more to subsidize government sanctioned oligopolies. The federal and provincial governments pandemic response was the final nail the coffin for me.

I would even question Canada's sovereignty at this point. Our politics are highly reactionary and issues like gun crime are driven by illegal guns from the USA. Coming here as an international student was a hectic experience. Locals don't really welcome you. Nobody comes and talks, people are walking here & there but nobody having group chats or fun! The culture is so different, people are like machines. In my country, people fight with each other, bump into each other, people laugh, cry.. there are interactions! It's like they hate their jobs and think they are superior to you, and talk in a condescending tone. I was booking a doctors appointment and the receptionist started yelling at me, I said " STOP, why are you speaking to me this way??" She went all quiet and changed the subject not apologetic, nothing. I think they do this because people do not call them out on their nasty tone and behavior. There really is a negative energy in this cold, concrete city, not the city I once knew , sadly.

My wife is Japanese and I'm Australian, we live in Perth. We are exploring options to live overseas as the cost of a basic lifestyle means we both have to work. Dual income first world societies really suck the lifeblood of the family unit. There is more to life than perfect roads and quiet streets of the suburbs.

Hey Ben. Similar situation to you. I hope you and your wife found somewhere nice to settle. If you two earn enough via remote work or a business, Thailand's elite visa is a great option. We used to worry about schooling, but looking at the state of schools in the 5 Eyes, we might as well homeschool kids. Having a bunch of bad educators, a failing system and peers who were raised by iPads is not good enough. Japan is a tough culture, but you international schools and housing costs outside of core Tokyo are great. I loved living there. If you can make it in, Singapore is lovely as well. Its good to see Aussies and Kiwis getting out while you can.

I've been a 'self-employed' entrepreneur for the past 10 years. I have found that 90% of the people I know at home (the Nation's capital), don't understand my desire to be an entrepreneur (a digital nomad) and it's mostly because of culture and my guess has been because it's a Government city and people are raised to believe your best bet is to work in the Gov't for 30 years and get your pension and then you can retire. They just don't understand why I'd struggle to live a different life. There is no where in the world that is perfect for everyone. There is, however, some place for every one. I am anxious to move to Portugal myself... for many reasons. I love Canada, but it's not where I want to live anymore.

I worked in Fed Gov in Ottawa a few years - Depressing and boring. MY boss at the time said its clear based on your cv that you want to travel, so take 50% of your day and find a new job abroad. I and my family are based in France and we have recently gotten permanent resident status in Canada. we plan to travel to Canada with our three kids in July for about a couple of months to get our PR card and basically discover Canada a bit. We might end up not staying and will probably head back to France. I fear that in Canada, we would have to start afresh in our careers plus the taxes are high I hear. Been to Vancouver 15 years ago, beautiful city. Now it’s as loony as Seattle and Portland. Lived in Toronto for two years, I wasn’t affected by the politics so much as I was going home in two years. I left Canada for New Zealand and just returned. I spent 4 years in New Zealand and had no idea it would be considerably worse than Canada. No matter what you read or how much you read nothing replaces actually being there and experiencing life in that country. In saying that we are planning to leave again. Housing, the cost of living, the lack of medical care ( we are on a 5 year waiting list to get a Doctor), taxes, are beyond ludicrous. The brain drain is starting and money is quickly living Canada for alternative countries. It will take some time for the imbalances to adjust themselves, if at all. We have several countries in mind, and are now just in the process of exploring and doing research. However before we make another move we plan to live in that country for a short period of time, in order to make a truly informed decision as opposed to relying on google searches.

I left Canada 32 years ago. One of the factors was how easy it was for undeserving people to get free money from the government. A workmate at a house we were painting was worried about being behind on payments for his new car. He went to some government agency the next day to ask for a handout. He came back to me smiling and said they gave him three months worth of car payments. That pretty much convinced me of that joke “Canadians work for the government for free for half of the year” was true. And when I saw people collecting unemployment cheques when there are so many job openings at fast food places, I realised taxes which were already high can only go higher in the future because of the Government’s free wheeling welfare system. So I saved up for two years, booked a one way ticket to Asia and have not looked back since.

The same problem here in Australia. The welfare system in Australia is encouraging Laziness. There are jobs around, but many people are not willing to do the job because it's very easy for them to get tax payers money from government. And you that work so hard has no rewards for your hard work. I love working, but the system did not reward me at all due to the highest taxes. I'm leaving Australia this year to a place where I can get reward for being a worker.

I moved to Vancouver from the UK 26 years ago. It's been a mixed bag. I've done OK in real estate and my own contracting business. The good points are the outdoors, the scenic beauty, relatively safe in terms of crime ...although as someone who didn't take the jab the government has gotten scary. The bad for me here it the the F***ng rain! Also just how you can live here for years and years and not really know many people, and no one gives a hoot about you. On my street there are 13 houses, only me and one other house where English is a first language. So, it's difficult to impossible to know someone when you can't speak to each other. So it's a bit like you do OK financially, live a physically healthy life, but a spiritually draining one at the same time. You sit in your house a lot of the time because it honestly rains from mid September until May, then it's pretty good with some rain and 2 months of dry summer, then rain again. But you can go skiing if you want to, and Mexico is less than 5 hours away. All in all I guess I'd say it's for sure one of the better places to live in the world. But has some big downsides. To use an analogy, I'd say living in Vancouver is like dating a beautiful women who is often mean. If you've ever been in that situation you'll know what I mean. It holds you in an unhealthy pattern, and you hope it'll get better, because if it did, it'd be ideal. But it doesn't, so you wasted a lot of your time/life hoping it would. I'm 60 and I could sell my house and retire if I move somewhere cheaper. Thing is I don't know where I'd go. I've been to about 25 different countries and I didn't really find one that was obviously way better. So maybe I'll just spend winters away.

As someone who transplanted to Silicon Valley I can say life is far better outside Canada. People are friendlier and seem more genuine. The one thing i really noticed is how much less people swear outside of Canada, there appears to be a much higher feeling of anxiety and frustration amongst Canadians which i believe is responsible for this difference. Another thing i noticed is Americans seem to accept that they are imperfect and have serious social and economic issues whereas Canadians are quite smug and exude an air of irrational superiority and will immediately deflect when you point out homelessness or health care wait times and quality and other serious ongoing issues. The people down here are much smarter and worldly and have a much greater can-do attitude than Canadians who seem to be far more negative and see the problems before you even finish your sentence explaining your ideas. The worst thing about living in Canada is the high income taxes and very low property taxes, Canada is a very expensive place to be a skilled wage earner whereas in the US you pay lower income tax, and much higher property tax. In Canada i resented people from around the world especially China coming in and buying up property and paying no income tax and very little property tax yet enjoying all of the benefits of social programs that were largely paid for by wage earners. Either way I'm glad to be out of Canada and especially enjoy the nicer climate of the bay area.

I find Vancouver to be hostile. Rent are expensive and overrated (I am in fact Belgian and grew up in France just to give you some context); buying a house is an “insult” (this is why I plan to buy in Europe instead as it is 2-3 times cheaper if I buy in some towns in France or Belgium) and many people in Vancouver seem to be unhappy and frustrated by where their lives has taken them! In regards to the girls here, I found them to be “nice” but in fact, they are just nice on the surface only (if I have to compare it to my experience of girls in France or Belgium). In Vancouver, most girls are very “money oriented” (yes and many of them date “sugar daddies but that is not known outside Canada, right?) and so many look for financial security in a partner than a sane relationship! I am not astonished to see why so many end up being unhappy, depressed suffering in their relationship and above all… end up being alone (and end up using dildos) and regretting their lives years later! After having lived in this place for 6 years (a place which I would leave behind soon hopefully as we are heading back to Europe soon), I am so glad to leave this place for good! Many relationships here are fake and superficial (compared to Europe) And it is a city where sooooo many girls (they pretend they are not) are sooo lonely.. now I am ni longer astonished why dildos sell so well!!! This is why so many (people and Vancouver girls) here smoke pots and end up being depressed or having lots of mental disorders! Now on top of that, I hate their hospitals where you have to wait for everything (in Belgium that has never existed), and dislike those fake social interactions that many think it is worth something when in fact, it is just superficial-ness, illusion and coldness. I strong believe that Canada is “worth it” but providing that you are thinking of it as a place to pass by, not retire or immigrate for ever! It is also worth it if you have an income from overseas (business or rent income) so you do not have to depend on local jobs which pay very medium salaries and a tax system that sucks everything you worked for! If I were younger and single I would seriously look at leaving Canada. We left Ontario three years ago for rural Alberta, didn't like Ontario culture. The taxes are cheaper, fuel,housing and car insurance. It is very sunny year round, not much snow where we are, and you don't have that sickening humidity that spoils the summers out east. I find the people here much more friendly as well.

Where to exactly? I am young (18) and single. I am Canadian but also British, Irish, and maybe also Hungarian too. I only speak English however. I have perviously lived in the UK (Northern Ireland), and France before coming to Canada with my family in 2010. reasons for leaving Canada: 1. ageing population transferring their social tax burden(s) to others while hoarding capital 2. anti-wealth building culture from top down (similar to your observations) 3. favourable demographics in Asia (more youth, dynamic growth, and more optimism in general). Having said that i don’t mind visiting YVR in spring or summer and maximizing the use of CAD and passport for easy-access to SE Asia, North East Asia etc. (Korea visa-exempt stamp is valid 6 months, Japan temporary visitor stamp 3 months for Canadians, Thailand currently 45 days). My current strategy is to carry multiple access rights (passport, PR rights, long stay visas) and then optimize residence based on short-haul flights and reduce tax burden on passive income sources. TBH I’ve got more freedom and flexibility operating in a low cost footprint rather than trying to constantly scale up capital in a ‘red oceans’ game.

If you're in or anywhere near Maine, I'd partially agree. A term such as "friendly Canadians" needs to be qualified. Simple translation = polite. That essentially is meaningless, as it is mostly (excepting Newfoundland) affectatious or outright phoney. My Canadian born, brown, professional children, now American citizens; live and work in Bay Area, Silicon Valley. The Americans are way more sincere and genuinely friendly in their social interactions. Especially if one is brilliant! Regardless of skin color. Canadians are ultra polite, but not friendly. They have a chronic and severe case of " Tall Poppy" syndrome. They are mostly, exclusively to themselves and their families. They resent, even the slightest of intrusions into their private lives. I just think Canada is way too boring, to be honest, a lot of people only come here because the immigration system is relatively easy. Getting a green card or work visa to the US isn't an option for most people in the Philippines or India. Going from an H1B to a green card can take way too long. But overall Canada is just depressing. It's in the air, the weather the lockdowns, scraping ice off your car. It's too much. Canadians also have this immense acceptance of whatever the government is doing, no passion or spirit, very dull. The US is not perfect, no country is, I still feel some good free states down there. I also feel Americans are more warm and direct.

I didn't renounce, as there are no benefits for doing so. Canada doesn't have citizenship based taxation and the passport is one of the strongest in the world. Renouncing would hurt more than keeping it actually. If you're an American that's a whole different story!

Totally agree about Canadian mentality! I killed myself trying to sell Mobile payments through QR codes. I was regarded as crazy. Nobody wanted to invest in a dying technology ..... now look at China with WeChat . Ironically I now live in china and want to go back to Canada for my kids education. Where would you suggest is best suited for family and e-commerce?

Cost of living ? New Brunswick or Nova Scotia are great buy a house for $250K - Quebec is a wonderful province if you speak french - they are great people and have a distinct culture.

Maybe try going and see for yourself. There is no perfect place in the world, and different people care about different things. If you don’t mind the cold and high taxes, Canada might be an amazing place for you. It is a first world country that still has lots to offer. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it’s always worth going and seeing whether it’s for you or not.

The problem is most of those places will have much lower wages. Ideally get yourself location independent skills to get freedom. Australia and the US both have good wages with some of what you're describing minus low living costs but very tough to immigrate. Maybe options in the middle east?
