Hey Man, surfing on tax havens and found your video. Really appreciate for putting together the list and appreciate for taking time and responding to comments. from your earlier comment *Depends on the country, often it is only long term but there are some exceptions*, can you please comment the countries/territories for short-term gains. Thanks Man

I'm from Belgium and i'm glad our incompetent politicians made this decision. However, i do pay 0.35% tax on the FULL amount when i buy a stock and 0.35% on the FULL amount when i sell a stock with or without gain. If you make trade like a daytrader you'll be taxed as if this is your profession. This is just for a few people.

Re. Shares, Switzerland doesn't like active traders, so the lack of capital gain tax only applies to investments held for at least 12 months. There are a few requirements to meet, otherwise the profits will be taxed, usually as income but the specifics depend on the canton one lives in.

Does Portugal really charge no capital gains? I thought they do, even under the NHR

The NHR protects foreign capital gains not domestic. Of course most of your capital gains probably will be foreign so that's good.

@@MichaelRosmer Hi! thanks for your video, Michael. About Portugal, a tax advisor in Portugal told us that we were wrong about the 0% capital gain taxes (CGT) derived from selling foreign stocks (we have US stocks, based in the USA). He told us that: stock dividends, bond's interests and capital gains derived from real estate have no capital gain taxation; however, there was a flat 28% CGT when selling foreign stocks. That's why we decided to move to Malaysia instead.
@MichaelRosmer
@MichaelRosmer 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoseManuelRojoManaute yeah the key item here is how they define foreign. If a Portuguese resident buys a stock on a market or of a foreign company that doesn't necessarily make those capital gains foreign. There was a similar court case in Malaysia that went the other way regarding interest btw and the question of whether it was foreign or domestic. Malaysia is a legit choice, I'd personally rather live there than Portugal anyway, it's just quite closed right now.
@JoseManuelRojoManaute
@JoseManuelRojoManaute 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelRosmer Thanks for your kind replay Michael. Our tax advisor warned us against selling stocks once residing in Portugal (not against "buying" once in Portugal). That's what forced us to go to Malaysia. If you had the opposite information (and you thought it would be possible to get established in Portugal at 0% CGT from selling stocks) we would love to hear your advice and know if you could provide us services for getting established there. Otherwise, I guess that we will continue arranging things towards getting established in Malaysia. Are you providing services for expats in Malaysia?

Unfortunately New Zealand has a tax on foreign shares if the amount invested is more than 50,000 dollars. If I understand correctly it's not really a capital gains tax though, it's a percentage of the total value of your holdings, every year (even if you didn't sell or make any gains). So still not great even if there is no capital gains tax.

-Where did you read that Belgium, Shwitzerland, Liechtenstein, and New Zealand have no capital gains ? I think it is false. If you can meet to many criterie (requirements), it might be true. On the other hands, there are many countries in Europe, like Hungary, Cheslovakia and so on...have 0 % capital gain tax if you hold your stocks over more year (for example, in Hungary: 5 year).
@MichaelRosmer
@MichaelRosmer 3 жыл бұрын
It's not false. Liechtenstein, Switzerland, New Zealand only tax local real estate, Belgium is a bit more complex. For reference you can read what the New Zealand government has to say www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/live-in-new-zealand/money-tax/taxes Where are you getting this Hungarian e exemption after 5 years? Though to be fair that's a super long time. Yes there are places where if you hold long enough there are exemptions.

@@MichaelRosmer you cannot daytrade in Switzerland and hope not to pay any CGT. You'll be assessed based on few criteria and you most likely will be taxed at marginal rate.

@bufordmaddogtannen
@bufordmaddogtannen 2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelRosmer let me rephrase it. In Switzerland there is no capital gain tax on shares if these are seen by the tax authorities as an investment. About gains from daytrading not being treated as capital gains it depends on the country. For instance, in the UK HMRC could in theory tax profits from daytrading at marginal rate, but don't do so as this would allow a person to bring losses forward for a number of tax years and HMRC doesn't like that.

@@islandboy9580 It absolutely requires the exact same thing as the US. It is part of the US. So yes for Americans who are able to take advantage of Act 60 they can potentially get away without capital gains, that's legit. For foreigners the immigration process into the US is very difficult and then Puerto Rico isn't appealing to most people so it's not a great option. @MichaelRosmer

No, dividends are dividends they aren't capital gains. Capital gains tend to fall into 2 categories: - sale of securities (generally not taxable in Belgium with some exceptions) - sale of real estate (tax rate varies in Belgium based on how long you've held for) In some cases crypto will have different rules and sometimes foreign assets are taxed differently from domestic assets.
