You forgot to mention one very important detail -- the offside can happen only at the moment of the pass, and not at the moment of receiving the pass. It means that if you stay behind the 2nd last defender and your teammate makes the pass ahead of you both and then you run ahead of the 2nd last defender and receive the ball, the offside won't be called even though you will find yourself catching the ball in front of the 2nd last defender. You won't be penalized for the offside because at the moment of the pass you were located behind the defender.

This is not actually the referees job. There are 2 linesmen, one for each side, running up and down with the play. Its their job to spot offside.

One key element that will make it easier for people to understand offside, is that it is there to prevent any attacking player from camping (or literally just standing still) next to the opposing goalkeeper or the goalposts, just waiting for the ball to be lobbed to him (the attacking player).

Good explanation, I hope referees pay attention. We had an undefeated season end with a draw in the final game. The issue was our player dribbled past last defender and laterally passed , pure horizontal pass, to a player in our team who started behind the last defender, that player scored but the ref (single ref) called it offsides. I about got red carded out of that game yelling at the ref who clearly did not know that a lateral pass is not offsides as the ball becomes the offside line.

I once called offside went three attacking players were all together charging the goal, dribbling the ball forward and passing the ball to each other as they went. There was no defender between them and the goalkeeper. As one of them passed the ball forward to his other teammate running a few feet ahead, instead of passing sideways or backwards, I flagged the offside after that player touched the ball. Boy were the parents mad! I think I was technically correct but perhaps emotionally incorrect. I don’t think the offside rule was intended to stop such a play. All 3 attackers had successfully outpaced the defenders. I didn’t get any real resolution from the rulebook or my superiors, so I’ve always wondered if I made the right call. According to your explanation, my call was correct. But I still felt bad about it.

But they kept passing it back and forth, and the guy with the ball would lag behind, and then pass it forward to his teammates.

I would just add that in addition to offside being called when you are actively involved in the play, it’s also when you interfere with play, so even if the ball isn’t played to you directly, if you are in an offside position but get in the way of the keeper’s eye line for example distracting him from saving a shot due to your presence near him, or if you attempt yourself to go for the ball in the process etc, that’s also an infraction and would be blown as offside and especially if the keeper conceded a goal during that situation it will most likely be a disallowed goal for your team with you as the reason for being penalised.

Its basically to prevent attacking players just camping at the opponents goal waiting for a pass. Would make it a predictable boring match. With offside rule it makes it harder to break down defense meaning you have to strategize more which makes game more enjoyable.
