OFFSTAGE with: Noah Bendix-Balgley

Hi everyone! I'm excited to announce a NEW SERIES that will feature guest artists over a variety of instruments.
Our first guest is Noah Bendix-Balgley, first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, violin soloist, chamber musician, and one of the nicest people I've ever met. In addition to being in the hot seat of one of the best orchestras in the world, he performs solo and chamber music concerts (we're in a quartet together!) internationally and also gives masterclasses in universities and music schools globally.
We're going to be picking and reviewing 3 videos that you have submitted to either the subreddit ( / raychenviolin ) with the "special guest review" flair or from our Discord server ( / discord . We'll also be answering a few questions and just be having a fun time in general! Thanks for watching!

I remember Ray playing the Franck sonata. It made me as a teenager fall in love with my violin again. That piece has stayed with me, thank you Ray!

Mr. Chen thank you for doing these live streams! These really break up my day. As a High School photography teacher, on rough days or if I'm having a rough day I would walk over to the music room during my prep period and sit in the back and listen to the strings class play their violins. It was very soothing to my soul, these live streams are very much the same, listening to short soundbites of violin music take me back into the classroom.

I'm not Australian. So far as I know I have no Australian ancestry. I don't know anyone in Australia. I've never been to Australia and have never particularly wanted to go there. SO, can someone please explain to me why that arrangement of Waltzing Matilda makes me burst into tears just about every time I hear it?

"Waltzing Matilda" earned a sarastic smile from me. I heard it live as an encore in January. Ray talked about the wildfires in Australia at that time and I tried hard not to cry. Back then I thought the raging bush fires would be the worst event of 2020. Boy, was I wrong!

Hi there! I am not Australian either but from a few encounters with Australian and visiting Sydney a couple of times, it is kind of the unofficial anthem. Just want to mention specifically on the fact that they did a beautiful great job in portraying both the calmness and the playfulness in the composition. And they do it in D major, which is very simple to play so the sound produced can be really really bright. Especially the violins do a lot of double/cross strings here, which can sound rough but he does it very smoothly. There are many pieces in D major that just give you this "light" feeling. Fyi I think Ray Chen plays the 1st violin part, while Noah plays the 2nd violin part. Just amazing to see their friendship and thriving to help others learn music better.
