Hi everyone! I'm excited to bring you the third guest of the exciting OFFSTAGE series where we feature a variety of guest artists over different instruments and learn cool stuff together!
Our guest this time is the incredible: Amihai Grosz; 1st principal viola with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, soloist, chamber musician, and one of the coolest people I've ever met. In addition to being a total badass on the viola and representing his instrument to the umpteenth degree, he also founded and spent 14 years in the Jerusalem String Quartet and now plays in a variety of chamber music projects including a string quartet with me and Noah Bendix-Balgley called: Made In Berlin.

Great video Ray, thanks for inviting Amihai, he IS the viola king, no doubt about that. If you want your C string to sound better, jiust give it the space it needs, put it on a bigger body (i.e. viola) and go for it! :)

Ah, Amihai Grosz, I saw him on youtube in the Mendelssohn octet performance.

Then you saw one of the most remarkable moments in the history of music. If I were able to ask Amihai one question it would be about that performance in Tivoli in 2014. I would ask "How in the world did eight brilliant musicians who had never played all together achieve such drama and unity of purpose?" And he would probably reply: "Big muscles." :-)

It's been said that Brahms wrote non-virtuoso music for virtuosos. Speaking as a pianist, that goes for Reger, too. It's very useful to have a teacher who can explain the difference. (Of course, one must always approach Reger forwards and backwards.)
