Wilkinson can look back on his career and know that he managed to wring every ounce of talent out of his mind and body. He may have regrets about his intensity and perhaps he will look back and wish he had enjoyed it more but he will never have to look back and say ‘if only I had worked harder’. It was also amazing to see the impact he had on world class players at Toulon. Players who had been at the top in international rugby who said they only found out what hard work was when they got to Toulon and worked with Wilkinson. At Toulon, especially, we saw the best of Wilkinson as a leader. He was the spirit and driving force of that team.

The one thing that stuck out for me in that 2003 final was this: "MORTLOOOOCK!... Wilkinson...", over and over again. It seemed that every time Mortlock would hit the line with a head of steam, where he was just about to break through, there'd be Wilko stopping that big train dead in it's tracks.

The thing also about Wilkinson's greatness is a lot of players can be very good in their own familiar environment where they perfect their craft, their own little personal routine, but he challenged himself and went to Toulon with a totally different set of players, coaches etc... and was still great and won titles.

Imagine being Will Greenwood on a Lions Tour. You get an outside shot in 97, can’t get near the test team but it’s fine because you’re coming into your prime. Over the next four years you become one of the best 13s in the world, shoe in for the 01 test jersey, only for some mug called O’Driscoll to come out of nowhere to become the greatest 13 of all time. You’d be gutted 😂

Some people have very complicated wiring and Wilkinson is one of them. As O'Driscoll says Wilkinson cannot explain things succinctly therefore he doesn't lend himself to being a good pundit. Where most could get their point across in 100 words Jonny needs 300. Great player though and very brave for a wee guy!!

@@fraz6354 have a point about 2007 in fairness but England were so dominant in the forwards in 2003 that whoever was at 10 would have looked like a king. He was a brilliant goalkicker but overall as a 10 he's massively overrated, Catt, Grayson and Hodgson were all much all round players, Farrell is close to matching his goalkicking these days too. He was a very good player, no arguments there, but he's hyped up to be on the same level as carter but DC was better than him at pretty much every facet of the game

@@nomore5668 7 tries in internationals, shows how average his attacking play was. o gara (who would apparently didnt offer an attacking threat) had 16 and was joint top try scorer in th 07 six nations. sexton currently has 14. gregor townsend had 17. obviously tries scored doesnt always show the whole picture but still its telling. all 3 that i mentioned were/are much better passers and o gara in his prime was a much better game-manager. again, im not saying wilkinson wasnt a great player, in 2002 especially he was brilliant, but he wasnt all he was made out to be. fine, he kicked the drop goal in the rwc final (right-legged for no apparent reason), but he missed four other attempts (plus the conversion) and some of those gave up try-scoring opportunities. this selfish play and the jon callard/dave alred thing in 2007 made it seem like he was above the rest of the team and to me makes him overrated
