Funny thing all those kind of “hardworking” people say the same thing....”young people don’t want to get out here and do this hard work” 🤦‍♂️ they are just trying to make themselves feel more superior even though they made such a bad career choice. It’s basically how they justify to themselves doing what they do for a living.

I've been there. One thing this piece didn't say was, when a diamond is found and verified, a really loud horn is sounded that you can hear for a mile. The funniest thing to me was the reaction of the people to this horn. Like they said, it's hot out there and people dig with enthusiasm at first, but before long, everyone is just kicking over clods of dirt and not even bothering to dig....until they hear that horn. Then they all start frantically digging again. It was more entertaining watching the people than it was to dig.😊

This video brings back some good memories. As a student of gemology at the time, I was visiting friends in Missouri in 1981 and we decided to take a trip down to the diamond mine. We even built our own little wood boxes with wire mesh to screen the dirt! Well, becoming diamond rich wasn't our calling that day. The blue earth pipe was almost as hard as concrete, it was hotter than haides, and so humid it was downright miserable, so we took to just wondering around looking for a sparkle to catch our eyes. We found nothing and eventually made our way off to a corner of the park where there was some shade. Low and behold we came upon a couple of guys who had dug a hole down about 6 feet deep, and one of them had just found a whopper! A few people were gathering, including my friends and I, and we got to hold it and photograph it. The next day we stopped by the newspaper office to pick up the news story about it, which I still have around here somewhere! This was almost 40 years ago, and I still remember the name of the finder, Blankenship, that he was from Louisiana and was a regular at the park. And 9 carats stuck in my mind. Google says I was right on finder's name, but the diamond was only 8.82 carats. The diamond has since been given a name, The Star of Shreveport, and to date it is the second largest found by a visitor, and I think 4th largest when including diamonds from the commercial operation. www.arkansasstateparks.com/articles/visitor-finds-203-carat-diamond-crater-diamonds-state-park I see the location of this find is now marked by a sign at the park, as are other famous finds: www.flickr.com/photos/lance_mountain/454664440/in/photostream/ Another bit of trivia that sticks in my mind is that one of the rangers told us the area where this diamond was found was where the commercial mine operation dumped their tailings. In other words, this dirt had already been run through the commercial operation and should have been diamond free. How did this one get away from them? Maybe they forgot to grease the diamond tables that day! Dang, now I've got the itch to go diamond mining again! Next time I'll time the weather and wait until the day after the pipe has been freshly plowed to break up the concrete which must reharden each time it rains and dries out.

There was also a subtlety to it that I did not mind almost as if it was part of the story itself. There is a reason it's a public diamond mine, it was bought out by the De Beers diamond company, then given to the state on the condition that it permanently remain a public park, thus removing the site as competition to the De Beers corporation.

I heard that DeBeers cut a "political" deal with a certain governor of Arkansas to keep the area non-commercial so Diamonds would remain in their control and prices could be manipulated. It seems the Arkansas mine have great potential so the former governor and his wife ended up being"compensated to keep out big business and they surprisingly own some of the largest diamonds found there. Of course this is only"Hearsay:) Cheers, Rik Spector

@@Ket0cs There's always somebody in the comments trying to project a negative angle onto to people they're watching in vids. How about, this guy is randomly approaching total strangers who were deep in their own business, and asking to mic them up, interview them on camera and put it on the internet. That's a bit daunting, and requires approaching with caution and respect, which is how I interpreted his behavior. If he was more "animated" people would be complaining about that. If he's more reserved and respectful, aware of his potential imposition, people complain about that. People who make vids on KZbin can never win. Always some keyboard warrior complaining about something.

Wonderful video guys. You have a natural way of interviewing people. You seem genuinely interested, and you are very respectful and polite. The camerawork is excellent, and the editing is flawless. Less (or lower volume) music to let viewers hear the sounds being made-swishing of the water as it swirls through the trays, etc. This video earned your channel a new subscriber. Great job. There is a town in the south of Brazil where there are various kinds of gems and valuable rocks just popping out of the ground (kind like this video). Due to Brazilian law, you can't dig to get anything there, but you can take whats on the surface. My father has been there and he said he was just randomly driving around the outskirts of the town and he found a huge ruby, as he eas coming back, he found an emerald. Truly a very interesting place.

We went once, stayed just a couple of hours, because we were just traveling through and didn’t stay the night. it was hot, dusty and dirty, but a fun experience, and I can see how people who do find something, could get hooked and keep coming back. I think for the most part, most people don’t find much, or if they do, they find very little, both in size and amount, after probably spending much more time there, regularly looking, or very few and far between someone is lucky and finds something spectacular, but I got the impression that even though the dirt is suppose to be turned over regularly, it seemed to me that it needed to be really tilled and turned over much deeper, as some other people have suggested. I guess you could dig deep and keep at it, if you spent enough time, but it seemed more like something you’d want to plan on doing when the weather was cooler, and staying at least a day, with a cooler full of water ice water, wet wipes, and whatever the regulars suggested. I’d also stay the night, and enjoy a nice shower and bed after a day out there, opposed to what we did, which was spending a few hours and then back in the road to finish our trip home. I think we ended up stopping after all, just from being so tired and dirty, not wanting to drive the rest of the trip without a shower ! Lol! Definitely better plan for next time. I’m not sure we’d do it again though, but glad we had the experience.
