The sustainable Findhorn eco-village has proven to be unbelievably advanced. With hundreds of residents, Findhorn is possibly the most successful eco-village in the world. They utilize solar energy, wind power, use recycled materials for homes and even have their own Earthship in their community. Many residents of Findhorn, some who live in retired whiskey barrel homes, came to Findhorn after finding enlightenment during California’s hippie movement. After many decades of development the people of Findhorn seem to have found total happiness. Would you live here?

I spent six months at Findhorn in my teens and did the experience week. It was a miraculous experience to see people, without coercion, and who were complete strangers come into collaborative attunement. I've never seen anything like it as a power structure, which makes me think that it was not used as the protocol for sacking some of the employees, or for taking revenge.

I have followed and loved Findhorn since they began. There were many Findhorn books, now disappeared. The original three, their adventures in contacting spirits of the plants and animals, the startling encounter with Pan in Edinburgh.. my children and I adored it all. I'm now mid-70's, have told people about Findhorn for years, as awareness was lost, so I'm super glad to see any program on Findhorn, to see the new folks and homes that have developed over the years.

From its beginning, Findhorn has perfectly reflected and lived by the beautiful and ethical hippie ideal. Not the silly "hippie" lifestyle usually ascribed by most media coverage. This is what we hippies were talking about, tried to achieve.

I don’t believe he said anything about America. He said Indigenous people meaning non Caucasian. He was erroneous in his statement of saying “we’re all indigenous” because actually Caucasian’s aren’t indigenous to any part of the world. Science has proven that the Caucasian people have only been here 6000 years but the Original people of the earth have been here since it was made 🤷🏾‍♀️ But i wouldn't consider it appropriation but intelligence to recognize what your people have done as a means of industrial progress hasn't been the best for healthy living.

When I was a kid in the '70s we had a short holiday in Findhorn "trailer park", actually a holiday park. We visited the foundation. My Mum, who was by no means hostile to the whole eco spiritual thing observed that for "spiritual" people they seemed awful fixated with cold hard cash! I was a bit starry eyed about the whole thing but my older wiser sister thought the whole thing was slightly weird. As to growing huge fruit and veg in a wilderness, it's worth pointing out that Northern Moray has some of the most productive agricultural land. On Earth!

What a fascinating place. I think it goes to show that the barriers to living like this are not difficult to overcome… With the exception of market forces making land unobtainable in many places. It seems like off grid living technologies keep improving, if we can find a way to reign in capitalism to allow for sustainable models we may have a chance!

It is happening already. I recently got interested in all this and planning to build my own organic house. In many rural places land is still affordable. Mostly rules are as such that because these houses have no concrete foundation and are easy removable... it is allowed to build them. Those countries or regions, cities who don't like these projects are often ambitiously fought by those trying to go through with it and mostly with success. No one can prohibit you of building a shelter, a home on a piece of land. I think it has something to do with human rights. So the future looks good in that regard. Also it is already helping out homeless people in Africa as there are cob house projects being set up. It's a very interesting societal shift/evolution which i only recently gotten aware of.

I like the idea. But as a city planner there are some things that worry me. If this is such a "sustainable" place, it's very low density which will inevitably lead to higher car usage. Having your own food grown locally is great, but people still have jobs and family and things to buy which they then will get in a car to go to. Great if they can do car sharing, but ideally we should have entire towns like this with medium densities.

it reminds me of the retirement plan of Hercule Poirot (Agatha Christie's hero). he went in a remote place in order to find solace in a more simple and crime-less area. and then was confronted with an horrible crime he had to solve, and then decided to go back to work, because you know, there is no holidays or retirement for crime. there is no such thing as a crime-less place too. bad people are everywhere, and their purpose is (I agree) to confront good people with their limits: how good do you really are? when confronted with your worse nightmare, how would you behave? would you stay consistant with your beliefs or would you loose yourself? actually, you cannot say you are a good person until someone test you to the core. as today all humanity is facing a spiritual awakening, we are also facing the worst uncivilized behaviors. and I now think that these 2 events are connected. if you want to do good, be ready to face your nightmare. loved the video, thanks!

Seems nice on the surface, but I get a cult-like vibe from the people he interviewed. I could be wrong I've never actually met them, but that’s the impression I got. The place gives off that energy of align with our ways or piss off. Which is fine it's their community they are entitled to that. Many details about the place remain obscure. When he asked that guy, so people live here for free? Boy, did he had to think that one through before answering. Hope I'm wrong, but that's the vibe I got from some of the residents.

Someone owns the land. Someone bought the wind turbines. Not being honest and upfront about basic things like "who really have the final say" screams cult to me. Sustainability is awesome. Social manipulation not so.

I would love live in place like this without religious beliefs. Sadly their is none like that in nz. Heaps eco community's but all have spiritual beliefs which they say your free to believe what you want. But the time I spent in a few of them I was not free to believe what I wanted. Each place had its own beliefs and if you didn't go all in you were an outsider and treated differently but I don't think they realised they were doing it. It wasn't on purpose just common thing humans do with group think

The narrator's lack of sincerity really shines throughout the interviews if this reel. His questions are so shallow in their wording to elicit specific sensational answers while projecting a flimsy facade of earnestness. Many of his unthoughtful questions represent a judgmental point of view, perhaps intended to humiliate sincere people doing what the rest of the world has failed to attempt. He works hard to draw attention to the village's idiosyncrasies, and even laughs at them during his interviews. I wonder if he is intentionally making fun of old people. Boooo!

It’s only cultural appropriation when it’s a big corporation making a big profit out of something a small community came up with and make their livelihood from. Please stop this cultural appropriation stupidity when it’s another small community incorporating good practices to a simple way of life. This is cultural appreciation.

Culture appropriation accusations are part of the Kosher bag-of-tricks against Whites. Didn't you notice it's always Whites being accused of it?

So, the wind turbines, solar panels and electric car's manufacturing and disposal isn't inclided in their footprint? Bc they leave a hell of a footprint, in addition to being extremely toxic. That's why wind trubines, solar panels and electric vehicle batreries have to be disposed of in specially designed landfills and disposal facilities.

The tone of this video feels very dismissive. The attitude of the interviewer really feels unnecessarily snarky in the first third of the video. Really interesting community, I feel like they're trying to do the best they can.

Interesting place for sure, pretty too, but I feel like more questions could've been asked. Especially using the fire at the end as a segue. How is it governed? Is it direct democracy because it's (relatively) small as far as population goes? They got a council of elders situation? Do they have a fire-station, is the lack of one the reason the buildings were completely lost, and if so are there plans to fund and organize one? How is crime, such as the arson, responded to? Exile? Community-appointed Sherrif? Impromptu militia? Again, I like the architectural and sustainability stuff, but I'd have to know more about the goings-on and maintenance before I could ever give it a try.

People do not risk burning down buildings for no reason , this man was at his wits end after he lost everything and then this so called community tossed him out . THAT is when we come together to do ALL we can to keep a tribe member from falling through the net . That was VERY revealing . There seems to be a lack of compassion and willingness to compromise when members are struggling and need their community the most . I felt repulsed when they stated they let a member go after he lost everything and sick to my stomach . Besides you need money and lots of it to be a part of Findhorn . It is a very exclusive club as far as I can make out. I looked into it myself and realised just how exclusive it was

The Findhorn Foundation is right next door to an existing Village called Findhorn, it's actually built on redundant land of an airbase, which is now a base for army engineers. It's about three miles north of Forres, a town of around 10,000 people. It's not in the middle of a wilderness by any means and the Findhorn "hippies" pay their taxes and use the same police and fire department as everyone else in the area.

Why are you trying to make it a city? Cities cause their problems. This is a village. You work to live & socialize. There's no need to be ugly. Everyone is accepting & responsible. You can be alone, but never lonely. It's the perfect place for those who are done with concrete, crime, & congestion.
