Considering this as a retirement location and your insight is greatly appreciated. A key thing of interest is the quality of the utilities, to include sewage. I read something from 2013 saying how corrupt the utility companies are, and that raw sewage is continually dumped in the ocean. High levels of bacteria at the beaches.
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jerry, Thanks for question...it would actually make a good video...Anyway...it's important to read or view updated info. We have seen a lot of improvements in the short time we've been here. #1 - quality of the utilities = The Government is the only provider for electricity and water, however depending on if you have water on your property, you could use your own water and create your own electricity. For cable tv, internet, & cell phone service, you have a choice of providers, making it better. Electricity is expensive, which seems crazy, considering Costa Rica creates over 95% of their own electricity. Depending on where you live...it's pretty stable...but often flickers or goes off for an hour or two at a time. #2 - Sewage - the majority of the country is on septic tanks. Raw sewage goes in the tank...but MOST gray water runs into the streets, creeks, rivers, and eventually to the ocean. #3 - Retirement - I think, in my opinion, CR would be the best retirement location and we'll do a video real soon on WHY.

In Puerto Rico most houses have bars and are made of cement and bars help with crime prevention but that is half the reason, the other half is that these type houses can weather hurricanes and floods a whole lot better. The phrase “puravida” does literally translate to “pure life” but that doesn’t accurately convey what ticos really mean , because the word life in itself does not imply happiness and joy. Ticos are known to be some of the happiest and proudest people on earth, so what they really mean when they say puravida is “nothing but happiness and joy”, which is a positive way to induce these elements into your psyche, and I believe this becomes the source of their upbeat and relaxed demeanor. When we foreigners come to Costa Rica looking to experience Puravida, but they get frustrated with ticos’ relaxed ways, we are actually missing the point and often will not be able to experience its benefits. If we were able to force ticos to change and work at our pace, puravida would be no more. Puravida!
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ulises....thanks for sharing. YES, you are correct and let's also let viewers know...that when Ticos use the word "PuraVida" it has many meanings...that one must take from context. It could easily mean Hi, bye, Have a great day, I agree, correct....or similar to the word Peace that was used often in the English language many years ago. PuraVida. is loosely used in many, many different ways....but it is true, If Ticos were like Americans...then there would be NO PuraVida.

@@RobertWilliams-mb9jb Thanks for your input Robert...Aeropost is an alternate way to get things...HOWEVER, my experience with Aeropost was horrible. I send a box with about $200 to $300 dollars worth of stuff in it last Nov 2019 and it was lost for a couple months, then after the Christmas rush was over, they found it...then we went back and forth so many times...I can't count for different things that were in the box. Long story short...I NEVER got the package and they say it was stuck in Customs. (that was my experience and this may not be what others experience) I'm very curious to learn how often have you used Areopost and how long did it take to get your package. We will be doing a video about different shipping option with the Pros and Cons of each. Again...thanks for your input!

@@RobertWilliams-mb9jb That sound interesting...however, it is important to NOTE: Aeropost fees are fairly expensive in my opinion. And while they say, they have their "In-house" custom people...it does NOT actually help in getting your items in the country...from my experience. Never the less, Aeropost is an option to getting or buying hard to find things in Costa Rica...but you are VERY right...make sure you know what is allowed in the country, because it will NEVER make it out of customs if you have something as simple as Vitamin C in the box. Great points you made! My husband and I are now here in CR and may have to reconsider our plans to relocate here because he is having such a difficult time adjusting to extreme humidity. We were surprised that the humidity factor was not mentioned. Maybe this is not a problem to most people? We spent a few weeksful in Sabalito, where the humidity was over 90% practically every day, our clothes were damp when we put them on, but we had no air conditioning. While in Jaco, the air conditioning seemed to help, but just a little. Any comments? You are so right about the internet! We are in a hotel in Panama at the moment, and have better internet here than since we left states! We have heard that there is consistent, reliable internet pretty much anywhere in the Central Valley, but we do not know this firsthand yet. Will let you know if we find out! Thank you for your time,energy and insightful information!
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
Yes....especially right now. We are at the height of rainy season and with the daily rains, we have a lot of humidity. Everything stays wet. It is NOT as bad in the mountains during the dry season. It gets really nice and not nearly as humid, but near the coast, it stays HOT and HUMID all year. I guess that is why they call CR the Rainforest. and not many places have air conditioning and if you choose to live where you need a/c, then your electricity will be very expensive. Internet is starting to get better since CR is now installing fiber optic, but it is not available everywhere. YES, near any decent size town you can get decent internet and if you are anywhere near a location where there are lots of tourists or ex-pats, then the internet is always better. You can get internet even in remote places, but you have to be willing to spend a lot for it. Check out our other videos... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ7bgpyOpc6UjcU that video will share how we are getting internet in the MOST remote area of Costa Rcia.

Thanks for your input Jorge...however, we are sharing our knowledge based on our experience. While, YES, you as a Tico may be very happy with the computer you buy in Costa Rica, what YOU may NOT understand and what we are helping our Viewers...(Gringos who are considering coming to CR) is that the computer you buy is NOT the latest. I know from experience of buying several computers. You can go to several stores in Escazu and Santa Ana and anywhere else in Costa Rica and YOU will not find the Apple M1 Mac Mini or hardly any of Apple's desktop computers. WHY because MOST Costa Ricans do NOT have desktop computers. The few Ticos that buy a computer will buy a laptop. In many situations the Laptop may or MAY NOT be the latest model. In most cases it is NOT. I know, because I went to San Jose, I looked at several places to buy the latest laptop and they didn't have it. I ended up buying a 2 year old computer that had been sitting in the ware house. And in MOST EVERY case (sometimes Apple is the exception) ONLY the Spanish Language is installed on the computer. WHY, obviously because those computer are being shipped and made for Costa Rica. That also means that in MOST cases the keyboard is NOT the same as the ENGLISH keyboard. So, while I appreciate your input....your input is NOT accurate for my audience....who NEEDS to know the FACTS that it is better EVERYTIME to by their computer and high tech gadgets before they come to Costa Rica.

@@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica Chinese made stuff comes in several tears, usually US, as well as S. Korean, European and other industrialized nations design their products and specify manufacturing processes and materials, and China manufactures superb quality stuff for them, like iPhones, Galaxy smartphones, and such. An then, you have chinese made stuff "designed" and manufactured to chinese specs and sold to most developing countries in the world, which is usually poor quality stuff that either breaks the fist time it's used, or does not work as intended. I believe Chinas's dubious way of doing business combined with local regulation and taxation keep good quality stuff from competing in the market. If we as Costa Ricans don't treat everyone equally that says a lot about our integrity, trustworthiness and "pura vida" mindset. Your absolutely correct a shirt should cost the same for a tourist as it does a local. BUT we are talking the difference between an advanced country and one that is not. In the States I can get the same shirt for a variety of prices.. I have the option of going different places. A variety of Store options. In a variety of neighborhoods. With a variety of prices for the same item. A smaller country cannot do this. So they have pricing based on local incomes. As we do. I don't shop in Beverly Hills, I simple can't afford it. Sometimes I go to to less expensive Grocery stores. As oppose to Ralph's. Costa Rica does not have that economic convenience. So if travelers tipped or gave to these countries I would agree 100 percent. But because they don't, I see the locals as doing what they can or have to, to make an EXTRA buck. Which to them would be any of us "traveling" to their "world", unfortunately. I'm not in favor of gauging a tourist BUT I do see why Countries poorer citizens do this. I've gone to restaurants in other countries, and they have had two Menus, a "local" and a typical tourist menu. If we too care of each other as we should, this would be a no brainier.

@@davidtaylor4756 That's why tips do exist in my opinion, as a traveler and especially if you know what the situation is in that particular country and you feel like you've been treated nicely by the locals you're more than welcome to give them a generous tip, my point is that you as a foreigner shouldn't be forced to pay a higher price just because, you should be allowed to decide if you want to.

The people are lazy, the internet sucks no matter where you are, cell service is a joke trying to call back home. The mail system correos steals all incoming mail from other countries and everything is the same cost as downtown Toronto canada.

We're NOT saying that there are NOT any other forms of theft. CR has a BIG problem with petty theft. But for other crimes....when compared to the USA or other countries....CR does NOT have a big problem with most crimes.

@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
Costa Rica like a lot of places has their own type or kinds of snakes. We've been here since Nov 2013 and have been all over CR, hiking through the jungles and very rarely do we encounter snakes. I would say it is safe, if you use good old common sense.

A disadvantage of being in the USA , and with FULL knowledge of the Country that YOU BOTH are campaigning to Bash! ..is to see YOU!.."Americans that make the rest of us look like we are like you. Living on your new found, coin enough to sit there making enough pennies to now coincidentally, live in the land that you are so unrighteous, untitled, ignorantly "stabbing in the back " ...as they say. I bet that wherever city/hometown that you were born...of course, is Paradise! And unlike Costa Rica, appliances are very cheap , homes are immense...tax free, and almost free!, also there are no thieves anywhere , prostitution is non existent in that Heaven on Earth town or city that was soooo blessed to be your Hometown! And of course, is in the US, but a little island of Heaven, within the USA! Yes! Because has no army, High literacy rate, amazing dioeversity, neutral, social Healthcare, highest longevity in the world, rain forests, cloud forests, amazing hydroelectric energy, and army of educators, not soldiers, best climate in the world...according to National Geografic magazine, more bird species than the whole North America ...pioneer in Human ,Civil, and Women's rights since 1890... Correct? That's why you are in COSTA RICA, bashing it. Even though, unlike many of the REAL CITIZENS of it, you are NOT Bilingual ..you don't even speak.....SPANISH ! And the English that you speak...is very articulate, well spoken and pronounced... What a SHAME, that is, simply, false! @@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica That's the point. You are deceiving, and just BASH IT. Point out things that exists and happens ANYWHERE in the world, except that in Costa Rica happens with a Gorgeous landscape. Why don't you move to Barrio Escalante, Ezcazu or Santa Ana in Costa Rica? Then do your so called "helpfull" reviews based on those areas? And the people that lives there, also from Costa Rica, very high end, with immaculate gardens in every house, perfect roads, no poor people needing help on the streets, vendors, or petty theft! Why not ? If you only are based on your side of the story. And your side is very, very minuscule. Before you generalize, investigate, learn the language, find out why the country has more schools than any other country , and not an army like EVERY other country, find out little cultural things like the Amazing Ballet season at Teatro Nacional, the hydroenergy unique and fenomenal. About the Costarrican/American Cultural Center where educated people from both nations share and care for all. How one of the Presidents of Costa Rica was Nobel Peace Awarded unlike so many im other countries. And how the majority of the people you encounter anywhere in any street, is not a criminal or a user...but someone that loves Americans so much that would take them to their destinations if they are lost to keep them safe, give them a ride if were walking in a remote area, share their humble , or finest meal with a smile ...and always tell others that THEY LOVE AMERICANS, AND THE USA! You must be either blind. Or live in a bubble. Sir.

I m a Costa Rican and let me tell you we call Americans (Gringos) not if you are a Russian or a German, no no no only Americans we call them gringos. And about Costa Rican been very poor, sorry to tell you 99% of the Costa Rican knows how to write and to read. Most of the Costa Ric-an knows english or other languages, my family live in the city and all of them are very educated, one is a lawyer, another is a psychology, and another work in the hospital, and my sister also work in a hospital, we live in Escazu which is a very decent place to live. All my relatives lives very well. You haven't visit the malls in Escazu and other places, people are not very poor, I don't know where you have been. And about mañana, you again are wrong, if I tell you I see you mañana, is tomorrow. I don't understand what kind of Costa Ricans you had been talking, otro día means another time or another day, I wish you could be able to get friends, but educated, but of course, we wouldn't live in the areas you live, the only place I visit is Jaco Beach my relative own a condominium there. Oh, all my nieces and family owns a computer. Well, enjoy Costa Rica and God bless you. And remember we call gringos to the American people (NO OTHER COUNTRY) and remember USA has millions of millions homeless on the streets, specially in San Francisco and Los Angeles and of course N. York.
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. It seems from your explanation, you are very educated and that is great. And sounds like, most of your knowledge comes from living in the city near San Jose and you said yourself, the only other place you've gone is Jaco Beach. YES, we do have some educated & wealthy Tico friends, however, for the majority of Ticos...they are poor. Poor does NOT mean they are not educated. We never said Ticos are NOT educated, but it is factual that most Ticos are poor and don't have much money. According to statistics, you can research, a very large percentage of Costa Ricans are poor and yes while many Ticos do have money, we are simply stating facts and educating the Foreigners who want to come to Costa Rica. Thanks so much for your input. We appreciate you sharing your viewpoint.

Gringo pricing? I think it is more like paying a fair price. Locals don’t make much money and pay a discounted price.
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree...it's NOT that ticos pay a discounted price....they are paying the regular price. If I go to a restaurant and a Tico pays 3,500 for a meal...then EVERYONE should pay the same price. IF I get charged 5,000 for the same meal...then they are robbing me. It does not matter if I have a million dollars or if I have NO money. Just because I am a gringo...does that mean I have more money??? Do you know that have any money??? NO you don't. It is not fair pricing. Everyone...regardless of race, color, where they are from should pay the same price. Otherwise...it's called "DISHONESTY" How would you like it if your daughter goes to the mechanic because she feel something is wrong...not real sure what it is... The mechanic says, oh, the transmissions needs to be replaced. And she pays $3,000 for the job. BUT in reality, the noise she heard was nothing more than bad brakes. The mechanic changes the brakes...a $200 job, never tells her. She thinks she has a new transmission, but in reality..she only has new brakes. I'm sure you would be justly angry! Charging different prices is no different.
@eddieherman10542 жыл бұрын
The example using my daughter and a mechanic is a totally different senecio. That is lying about the work performed. Need a tranny and get a brake job. That’s fraud. I suppose you have never been to Cuba. Cuban peso for nationals and as a foreigner, you get CUC which is a peso. Your peso equals $1 usd. Their peso equals a dime. You each pay one peso for bread. That’s because of the low salary there. You think you should come to this country and receive everything a Tico does who earns $500-800 usd? Please.

@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
I don't agree....while a lot of Gringos wish they could change the culture...Costa Rica will NEVER have enough gringos in the area to change anything. Fast food will come in....but that is NOT the gringos fault. The government allows those fast food businesses in like McDonald, like Hooters, and many Ticos go to those fast food businesses because they like the food.
