Hey Matt, take it from a skilled Homesteader... make sure that tank can vent air from the top or the water won't fill the tank very much due to pressure increase inside the tank as it fills. A TINY vent is all you need to allow air to escape as it fills. Great design with the tall fill pipe. 100% will work if you vent. Subscribe if you want more useful survival/homesteading content!

Always amazed that you and Mere have never seen fit to install solar, batteries and rainwater harvesting up at the house. Couldn't get more off-grid than that. Plus the Texas electricity grid is pretty dodgy and unreliable and since droughts are becoming more common and intense, having your own independent water supply for the house could eventually make all the difference.

I was also going to say having that output pipe at the lowest is going to allow a lot of dust and grit to go straight to the pump filter, i'd suggest something a bit like a U bend under a sink to capture the bulk of the grit that gets through the top mesh, that's easy to remove and empty, it should work well because flow will be slow in that 2" pipe

Hey Matt just FYI how to turn off that seat belt chime in your truck! For Driver's Seat: Before starting the procedure, make sure your parking brake is on. Get inside of the driver's seat and close the door. Turn the ignition to ON but not start (key position 2, or press push to start button without your foot on the brake if you have a push to start button). Wait 5 seconds, then buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt 3 times with a 1 second pause between each buckle. Wait 4 seconds, then buckle and unbuckle again. The orange/red seatbelt warning light should flash a couple times indicating that the procedure worked and was completed successfully. If that didn't work, try repeating the procedure with the parking brake OFF. For Passenger Seat: Same thing, make sure parking brake is on. Grab another person. Sit in the driver's seat, have your helper sit in the passenger seat, and close the doors. Turn the ignition to ON but not start (key position 2, or press push to start button without your foot on the brake if you have a push to start button). Have your passenger do the same procedure listed in step 4 of the driver's seat procedure or do it for them as they are sitting (Wait 5 seconds, then buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt 3 times with a 1 second pause between each buckle. Wait 4 seconds, then buckle and unbuckle again. The orange/red seatbelt warning light should flash a couple times indicating that the procedure worked and was completed successfully.) If that didn't work try repeating the procedure with the parking brake OFF.

Hey Matt I would put a cover over the pump. I have installed a few around the place and they tend to die if they really get wet. It's stupid to think it's a water pump so it can get wet. But nope they die. Just a little shelf above it so rain falls away would be enough.

Need to put a larger water collector with a steep leaf screen otherwise the leaves will block the water flow. Tank needs a one way vent to push the air out as it fills. The water from the roof will only go into the tank if the eves have more head pressure than what's inside the tank. Once the tanks 1/4ish full your eves will not fill that tank any more, i don't think.

@Sophie-and-Ken Жыл бұрын
Finally someone pointed this out. You can’t fill a tank from the bottom. The hydrostatic pressure will make it impossible even with a vent. I don’t think it will ever even get 1/4 full not from that half ass gravity feed. You need to fill the tank from the top and you need an overflow pipe.

As a land-owner that wants to have solar you have 2 choices. Place them on your roof and work up high with limited space. OR clear a small piece of land and place them on ground level and have as many as you like. I would do the ground panels because you don't have to worry about falling off the roof and you can easily clean them without going up on your roof every time.

Just a heads up with the tank, since its clear you will most likely grow mold very quickly, you need a black tank to store water outside. Also I couldn't tell from the video but you probably will need an air vent for the tank at the top to let air out and in, because your filling from the bottom once the water gets above inlet pipe air will have no way to leave the tank and same thing when you try to pump it out, no way to get in.

@jamess.931 Жыл бұрын
Yea I would insulate the entire pipe even what is under the ground, he only put it a few inches under so any freeze that lasts more then 24hrs will most likely freeze the underground portion. Sop better to be safe and it won't cost much at all to insulate that 10ft of pipe
@jimbeam3280 Жыл бұрын
Its true, water will find it's own level, which is why manometers can be so handy. Filling the tank from the bottom, will work as long as said, tank is vented. However, in heavy rain it could help backing up, and the gutters overflowing as they are not not draining quick enough. Feeding in from the top of the tank should work better. Tank will also need an overflow, to take excess water away from the immediate site. The fact that the tank is clear, could cause probs with algae growth.

Why not put the mesh directly over the gutter instead of the top of that pipe? If a leaf falls on top of the pipe and blocks the entrance because of the water coming from top, all the rain will spill to the sides and won't collect anything.

@davidmack7018 Жыл бұрын
Principally good idea on downspout but you'll need a bigger scupper on top of that from gutter to downspout pipe. It's just not big enough for surface area few times it rains in your area Texas, you'll want to trap all you have coming off the roof. In this case a bit bigger figure leaves slowly flow too you must keep rooftop blown or picked free of gutter & rooftop leafs. Cool idea your tanker truck can help top it off too.
