The engine has an air compressor built into it, either attached to the side, gear driven. Or mounted to the front, belt driven. Air tanks have a governor that will shut off the compressor between 120-140 psi. The big things going to the drums are call brake chambers. Also there should be small cords coming off of the tanks, to drain any water build up, make sure you pull those every few weeks, especially after it rains, to make sure there's no water in your air system. :) All the truck drivers who watch your channel can probably tell you anything about that brake system you want to know!

Also those tanks are most likely a primary, secondary, and accessory. With the compressor filling them in that same order. Your guage most likely is hooked up to your primary, so though it shows full the horn doesn't start blaring until the accessory tank fills.

@colecooper58364 жыл бұрын
The odds of it truly being a fishing lure are slim. There's pretty much always screens on the pickup tubes in fuel tanks, meaning it never would have picked it up out of the tank. Its more than likely diesel bug from sitting long periods and not draining the water out of the tanks/water seperator.
@FeriteKnight4 жыл бұрын
There's a compressor on the engine which fills the tanks. A pressure regulator on the tanks tells the compressor motor when to turn off and on, and you'll have bleeder valves as well as regulator valves on the tanks for service and safety respectively. The air system running off the tanks will consist of different valves which feed the air brakes, horns, etc...and are actuated by the controls. The brakes themselves use a diaphragm to compress a spring, which holds a rod that applies the brakes. The system on that truck is different than what you would find on the vast majority of vehicles with air brakes these days. I don't remember all the specifics, (it's been 14 years since I worked with them), but basically your air system loads the tank to pressure, and then puts that pressure to various components like brakes, horn, etc...some of which will vent it, while others store it temporarily, like the brakes. Every application drops the tank pressure, so you have to be careful about managing it. Something modern trucks have, that I didn't notice on yours, is a button to apply the brakes while you're out of the vehicle. Honestly, the air system is critical to operation and safety, so it's a good idea to make sure it is clean, safe, and operational. Like I said in another post though, there are things I would remove from the air system. The air horn I might keep, but I would replace it with a conventional horn and move the air horn to a pull cable operation or something. The windshield wipers I would definitely just replace with electric. Not sure what that truck has for batteries, but I would probably be looking at the alternator and batteries on it as well. I'm guessing it has at least 2 fairly standard batteries in one of those side boxes; something like you would find on just about any 1.5 ton truck. If you're going to be adding load to the electrical, it wouldn't hurt to make sure that system can handle it and provide adequate battery storage as well. I'm guessing it could use some work under the hood so to speak, and some general upgrades and improvements. It doesn't look like a lot was done under there, other than general maintenance. Everything appears more or less original. I hate to say it, but it's a great project truck lol

Pack down to remove air bubbles and smooth out exposed top surface... Immediately screw an eye bolt into center of Flex Paste... The air brake cans should be drained at least weekly. Even daily if driven for extended trips. Hard to know when things like a solenoid goes bad, fellas.. and that wasn't a fishing lure either, it was some sort of RTV silicone that'd been used to repair something in the fuel system at some point that got unstuck.. not a good repair of course but I dont think think that company is to blame about that bit either.. its a 30 year old military vehicle, it'll have its fair share of weird field repairs. So go easy on them ;-)
@jaydunbar75384 жыл бұрын
1:57 thats a air dryer, it does exactly what you would expect. Sole job is to keep your air system from rusting from the inside out. The top portion contains the media that is supposed to be replaced yearly. Gear driven air compressor on the front of the engine is the "how" of the air system. The brakes have spring in them that take air to release, safety function so the truck doesn't roll away when the air bleeds out. Btw the air system can only loose 3psi in a minute with the brake pedal pressed to be legal, so you do need to keep that air system sealed up decently.

the fuel break down was from a fishing lure, which could have been someone stuck it into the diesel pump nozzle and matt just happened to be the next person to pump it. (Some gas stations have pumps with 2 nozzles, one gas and one diesel) Clearly they tried to preserve as much of the old trucks used as possible so the air horn issue isn't really that bad. Even demo-Matt isn't to upset about it, old truck, old parts. Horn is annoying to have happen but not hard to deal with.

Not gonna lie, after I watched the video of him getting the truck in Georgia, i kinda suspected the truck wasn’t going to be great out of the shop. Something about the place seemed a little off.
@KickButt9764 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Marbut yeah I understand that, it’s just when you buy a car, whether it’s new or used, you usually expect it to hold up for a bit. He’s had a couple of different problems and he hasn’t even put 1500 miles on it yet. The biggest eyebrow-raiser was the defroster blowing hot air constantly. That absolutely should have been checked and fixed before being sold to Matt. That’s such an obvious problem, sitting in the truck for more than a few minutes, this guy should have noticed it, and if he did, didn’t give enough of a shit to fix it before selling the truck for at least 75-100k. Also, the “fishing lure” they found it the fuel lines, according to a lot of the comments, sounds a lot more like diesel jelly.. probably caused by shit sitting in that tank forever while it was sitting in this dude’s backyard.. just saying, I have a feeling there are going to be even more problems soon..
@ljsquared32104 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Marbut From the way it was described the guy basically rebuilt the truck from 2 5 tons, its likely been sitting around waiting to be sold unless maybe they used it as a company truck or something. Idc what kind of a vehicle it is though if you're trying to sell it for 75k+ (which this specific truck may not be on that list) then I would expect it to have any and all issues fixed before I start driving it.

i thought custom combat tears the trucks all the way down and rebuilds them? Also as a truck driver the truck emptying out all the air after you turn it off is not normal and leads to tickets in a comercial truck. your truck needs the air componets tore a part and resealed and any leaking lines replaced. U bolts too. i presonally would be putting this thing in the shop to a profensional to make sure its safe before any more driving #savetheBraveHumvee
@scotthenry96904 жыл бұрын
If the air horn is going off it will drain the air out of the system.. and its not always easy to fix every single air leak. If it's an audible leak DOT can hear it needs to be fixed. Just a slow leak you'll be fine
@jonkwarsick28134 жыл бұрын
@@scotthenry9690 it does not have to be audible. you seem to have no idea the rules a truck driver has to follow. i mean if a air line has rubbed on something else its a DOT violation. Also the law of you can only have so much air loss per second with the brakes applied. If a DoT officer wants to do a full inspection of your truck that they are allowed to do basicly on a whim whenever they want relax cause your going to be there more then 2 hours. Yes it has happened
