It has to be a male and typically it's someone you grew up with, is your best man at your wedding, your kid's godfather, business partner etc. In most cases they're closer than an actual blood brother. Your roll dog, best friend, your ace etc. its throughout all latin/hispanic culture. even Italians have a similar concept "compare". I'm Puerto Rican and we say "compai", Mexicans and south Americans say "compadre"; but it's all the same thing; but slightly more meaningful to us than the American/Western concept of best friend. I'm 41, my father is near 70 and so is his compai (my godfather). Even at this age, if I call my godfather and ask for help, he's expected to handle it and he still would, no questions. Conversely the same applies to me... if he needs something and calls me I'm supposed to handle it (and I would), just off the strength of him being my father's compai (compadre). Where the more western concept of "best friend" doesn't really have those expectations attached to it. Hope that makes a little more sense...
