Well THIS was certainly trippy film!
When I heard about the Truman Show for the first time, which was actually recently by you guys, I genuinely thought it was gonna be about some guy's like... talk show. NOPE. Definitely not. What a crazy, fun ride this was! So many whacky things happened and it was overall a really a cool concept for a movie.
I hope you guys enjoy this reaction like I enjoyed the film!!

the '9' is the Greek letter alpha - Sirius is α Canis Major (or more properly α Canis Majoris, or alpha *of* Canis Major). In one of the early European star maps, stars in a constellation were designated with a Greek letter, usually in rough order of apparent brightness, through it's a bit off with Canis Major as the second-brightest star in the constellation is epsilon (ε CMa) - the fifth letter.

Christoph wasn't evil, if anything, he did in fact love Truman, as any parent loves their child. However, that love became an addiction and then that addiction became an obsession. His obsession overwhelmed him like a tidal wave.

"This is turning into a psychological thriller" Carrey was perfectly cast for this. He is most known for his comedic talent, but he gets to use all his range here. He later did true pure thrillers too and did amazing at it.

I refused to see it back when it came out because it wasn't a comedy. I was only 11 or something I think, I was still into Ace Ventura more than Jim Carrey, I wasn't ready for his dramatic chops. Didn't see it until a few years later but this and The Majestic (would love to see a reaction to that :D) are what made me really get into him as an actor

Although Truman's escape wasn't intended by the production, it was like the whole audience was subconsciously rooting for it. Everyone cheering in the Truman Pub at the end makes me so happy! Greatest moment in television history, and the two cops at the end are like "okay that was good, what else is on?"

When this was released if you had seen any of the marketing you knew the premise of an unknowing Truman being in captivity and being recorded. To watch you watch not knowing that premise is a much more gratifying experience than actually seeing the film first run. The irony of enjoying the reaction video experience when considering the plot is no small thing either. This is a great example of why reaction videos are so captivating.

A lot of little details hidden in the movie: like the quote on the sign at the front of town in Latin reads "One for all, and All for One" in this case meaning Truman. There's also a shot where Truman has Vitamin D near him, they had him take Vitamin D because he wasn't getting it from a real Sun, he'd never truly been around real sunshine.

Definitely do rewatches of this. There are SO many little things. For example, when he's talking to his friend stocking the machine, you can see him pull stuff out, then restock it, so that they can keep the shot going. Or how it's implied that he used to have a brother that the show got rid of. And the twins are pushing him, so that they have a good shot of him up against the advertisement.

A detail I only understood recently: the woman in the travel agency removes the thing under her chin. I think it was because they didn't expect him to go there, so they had to rush to get her ready and do her makeup.

I love the part when Truman's fighting his wife and they send the best friend in to help her, and he walks in beer first 😂 always room for advertising even when someone might die 😂 🤦.

The Truman Show is the Pleasantville version of The Matrix. It actually reminds me a lot of how often parents fall into the trap of protecting and insulating their children from the problems and ugliness of the world, that they can actually harm them by isolating them entirely from the actual world. It reminds me of the story of Siddartha Gautama and how his father raised him to never be exposed to the existence of pain, suffering, and death. And I see a number of overlaps and parallels (in that regard) with that story.. or even say Finding Nemo. I always find Christof’s assertion, that “There’s no more truth out there (in the real world) than there is in here,” fascinating because although it’s obviously false, it’s far less obvious why it’s false. Everything that exists in Seahaven Island is either a copy or inspired by something that exists in the real world. And yet, it’s all false, in no small part at least, because the intentions and motivations behind everything that happens on the Show aren’t genuine, eg Meryl’s “marriage” to Truman being an acting job to her (hence her crossed fingers in everything) rather than something she herself believes or wants. It’s a fascinating exploration of what makes something real or not.

The truly crazy thing is that even outside of the set, in the real world, everybody Truman meets knows who he is and has watched his entire life happen. Which means he will never meet a true stranger.

Not only that but I remember them advertising it as more of a comedy it came out at the height of Jim Carrey's comedy career. And its not a comedy. Its a drama (though it can be funny) as this was one of the first times Jim Carrey wanted to expand his acting. He's great in this.

The scene with his best friend at the pier is so heartbreaking. He's been best friends with Truman since he was seven, so, really, this is almost as much of his life as it is Truman's. He was a child actor, so he likely didn't have any choice in the matter, he was just recruited into this lifelong role even though he knows it's a sham. So he's not lying to Truman when he appeals to their friendship; Truman really IS his best friend, and having to live a life of constant deception, since it's all he's ever been allowed to know, is crushing his soul. I don't think his tears were insincere.

i'm always so happy to see first time reactions to this, because it doesn't happen often. this movie was SO ahead of its time, so incredibly well-acted by all involved, so emotional. it made me see jim carrey as a real actor, not just the goofy ace ventura dude. the moment when the ship bangs into the wall of the set and you see truman sobbing and hitting the wall and realizing, truly realizing that he's in a fucking prison, and there's no sound but the swell of that beautiful background music... god, the first time i saw that i was just bawling. so amazing. thanks for this one :) oh, and in case no one pointed it out yet: the meryl and marlon characters were given those names in tribute to meryl streep and marlon brando, two of the most talented actors of all time.

They backed him up against that "Kaiser" advertisement at the beginning of the movie because the Truman Show has no commercial breaks. So, they have to try inserting product placement throughout the show.

I notice something new every single time I see this movie. When Truman's "best friend" says he was out of school for about a month for being sick, it's probably because the actor was out to get training for the remainder of his role. Or something. Clearly, he couldn't have really been sick. And I'm pretty sure a lot of the extras make repeat appearances but in different "roles" in the background. Not a continuity error, but just how everyone in the city is just an actor probably working in shifts.

I like watching movie reactions in general, but I really love it when a movie like this gets people into some serious thought and discussion. And speaking of "serious" did you notice what was written on the spotlight that fell from the sky? It said "Sirius" which is the real name of one of the brightest stars you can see from Earth. So basically that spotlight served as the star Sirius in Truman's world.

Great reaction OG, I actually think Sylvia was always against The Truman Show from the start, I think she was one of the protestors of it and was able to, if you like, go undercover to try to sabotage it.

In the scene where he's nearly hit by the bus and he holds his hands out and the car stops, it took me some time to figure out how this could be the trigger it seems to be. After all, of course the bus and car stopped. What else were they supposed to do? Hit him? But it comes down to principal actors versus extras. Some people have speaking parts and some people don't. In a real-world version of that scenario, either the bus driver or the driver in the car would say (yell) or do something in response to almost hitting a pedestrian. Nobody would just sit silently. But these actors can't do that because they're not authorized to speak on camera. It's above their pay grade. What makes the scene significant isn't that they stopped. What's significant is that it's the only thing they did.

definitely one of the best movies I’ve ever watched! And one of the best things about this movie is that it’s unique! You cannot make a movie like this ever again! I mean yeah shows like Wanda Vision managed to capture the vibe but this movie with the exact concept they created cannot be re- created! And I love it! In my opinion Carrey deserved an oscar for his performance. Another awesome movie with him is I love you Phillip Morris (where again he should’ve gotten an oscar for) totally underrated movie!!

This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. He always plays this over the top stupid guys which type cast him so when I saw this movie I fell in love with it. I prefer to see him do more serious characters because he is a great actor & deserves better roles than silly characters. Glad you liked it. Another weird Jim Carrey movie I like is “Number 23”.

There was a small independent film made in the 60's called "The Secret Cinema" directed by Paul Bartel (I happened to see it in a film class in college) that may have been an inspiration as well. It was about a woman who's life is secretly being filmed by her "friends" who set up weird situations and then "episodes" of her life are edited and shown at a local cinema every week.

There is a condition that has been dubbed "Truman syndrome" where the patient believes they are the main character in a reality show and are being filmed at all times. The irony, of course, is that we ARE always being "filmed" - be it by video, audio, gps or computer/internet footprints. It's kind of an interesting thought, that a "mental health condition" could actually be in line with our current "digital reality". Or maybe I'm just deliciously stoned.

Directed by an Aussie - Peter Weir Years ago Harrison Ford was determined to show he was an actor not just a character from Star Wars, or Indiana Jones so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Witness" Robin Williams also wanted to be seen as an actor, not just a comedian so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Dead Poet's Society" And... Jim wanted also to test his acting skills and got Peter Weir to direct him in this film

The Truman Show is suddenly popular this week, this is the 4th reactor I watch. I worked at the movie theater when this was out, we had to wear big pins that said “Free Truman”, not realizing till I saw the movie that it was a big spoiler🙄

Considering this movie is from 1998 it is quite on point about how describes todays society in some ways, with all the social media like instagram, youtube, tiktok and all the fake lifes people is living online and not in the real world. The movie predicted very well whats is went to happen and i wouldnt be surprised if in the future we have something similar to Truman´s Show. Good reaction as usual. Sorry if my english is not very accurate. Oh if you liked this movie i recommend you "The Game", with Michael Douglas. I think you are gonna like it if you havent watched it already.

This movie was incredibly prescient about present-day American life. We are all Truman today. The corporate news media and big tech are Christof, carefully manipulating what the public is allowed to see or read and proclaiming themselves as the arbiters of truth. As viewers of the film we easily identify the villain, but like Truman, while being manipulated we fail to fully comprehend the level of control being exercised over us. Now stepping down from my soapbox. The "island" in the movie wasn't a set. This was filmed on location in a small beach community in the Florida panhandle called Seaside, FL. I've been there many times.

This is an excellent variation on the dystopian tv show idea that uses a "reality" show format. Another great movie that is more of a game show take on dystopian TV is The Running Man. Very different but many common themes.

Did you happen to notice in the travel agency, when the lady came in, she still had her make up bib on and she quickly took it off? Cuz Truman did something spontaneous and they had to quickly accommodate for it.

Thats weird. I had a super strange and vivid dream last night that it was like 300 years in the future and we had a gigantic satellite dish that you could see behind mountains on the horizon, and it creeped me out, and the shot of the fake-city dome in this movie that was shown looked just like it.

Loved your reaction to one of my favourite movies. It came out as a precursor to Reality TV. I think the idea of Big Brother came about soon after this movie. The movie Network (1976) was also a head of its time and thought of as outlandish. (Not so much these days now.) Recommend you check it out sometime.

In 2008 Popular Mechanics named this movie one of the top ten prophetic science fiction movies of all time. It was released in 1998, just before the big explosion in popularity of so-called "reality" television. The American version of Survivor premiered in 2000 and Big Brother, a couple years later.

Seems like everyone thinks he didn't know how to actually drive the bus but they clearly drive the bus around the town to give the impression of it being legitimate. He stalled it because Truman got on and as you mention, had to make it to where he couldn't leave.

Peter Weir is a great director. Always some deeper statement and beautifully shot. Even 23 years ago, this film was warning us of the blurring line between reality and entertainment. Gotta recommend a couple more of his works. Dead Poets Society (1989) Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard Witness (1985) Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lucas Haas

I think my favorite little bit of trivia or fun fact is when his best friend is restocking the machines (that’s apparently his job) there’s a moment when Truman looks away and his bestie is trying to slyly take out as much candy from the machine as possible to continue restocking since he doesn’t have enough. Also there’s a deleted scene where Christopher was talking about making a spinoff of Truman‘s kid and implying that it would be like the beginning of a franchise where every channel had a family member… creep x 10000

😄 Ah. You found it curious just how many Tom Hanks movies were being recommended? I mean he _is_ a very good actor. I noted, though, one day, when I was looking at his filmography, just how few of them had him actually playing an _antagonist._ Personally, I'm only aware of one. It's called _Cloud Atlas,_ and even there, the main actors each play _several_ parts.

A truly great film but if I had to nitpick, I would say it's odd that all of these mistakes (the set fixture falling from the sky, the rain just falling on Truman, etc) seem to happen just all of a sudden as if some amateur had taken control of the show.

Great reaction to such an unique film, but the reaction was even more impressive with your display format: centre for blurred and corner/side for full video. Best on-camera presentation format I've seen- it works really well. I hope others copy your style, much more watchable.
