This episode is where I think the writers and cast 'found' Boimler and Mariner. By having them both on the same side against a third party it got rid of a lot of the more grating aspects of their earlier relationship in favour of what feels more like an actual relationship of equals. And Mariner's line about how she'd never put other people in danger just to flaunt the rules is also kind of key
@MrJerks933 ай бұрын
Hard agree. I think it took a few outings to get the relationship and Boimler right. Here they are presented as equals and they work like mismatched buddy cops.

Fun fact, Fletcher has been in every episode of the show up to this point other than the first one. He totally feels like one of those minor crew members who show up in TNG for the one episode where they're plot relevant and then disappear forever, but he's always been there doing unimportant things in the background. My headcanon for why we don't see him in episode 1 is because he hid in a storage closet the moment the outbreak started.
@Drakoni233 ай бұрын
Also love that. It's a win-win. One one hand you get more continuity and the crew really feels like it's the same crew on the same smaller ship. On the other hand it makes no sense for them to draw all new background characters for each episode. So you reuse the ones you've already animated, saving time and money, while getting continuity for free.

This is the magic of Lower Decks. Yes, they are a comedy show and make fun of every Star Trek trope. But don't we all? Evil AIs, Holodeck and Transporter shenanigans, Kirk speaches, long shots flying around the main ship, the Riker maneuver. At it's core this show is a love letter to Star Trek with a lot of heart, made by a Star Trek fan. Some of the references are super obscure but all part of the universe. And while in the first season it feels like they rely more on references, the further we get, the more the show stands on its own legs.

One thing that to me, makes Lower Decks seem like quintessential Star Trek. When it came out, it was the first time we'd had classic adventure-of-the-week trek since the end of Enterprise in 2005. (And since ENT season 3 was a whole-season serialised story, and 4 was mostly multi-episode stories, technically it would have been the end of season 2 in 2003)

Voyager had one, called the Aeroshuttle. It's that shape on the underside of the primary hull. Test footage of it detaching and flying can be found with a quick Google. But they never used it. Only once (so far, as at when this episode came out) has a captain's yacht been seen in use - the Enterprise E's in Star Trek Insurrection
@MikeJF853 ай бұрын
Captain's Gigs are a thing on navy ship, or were up until about a decade ago. The ones on Star Trek are mostly meant to be the diplomatic shuttle for VIPs, able to ferry them around with staterooms and all, and are also available for the needs of the Captain. Ships that have to do Contact stuff have them (like cerritos's Second Contact stuff). Voyager had its own support ship, the Aeroshuttle, but that was meant to be a planetary science shuttle, not really the same purpose as the captain's yacht.

This is the most Star Trek thing on the air right now - Strange New Worlds comes close, it really has that TOS groove. But Lower Decks has that essential Star Trek element - hope. It's a parody, but it wouldn't work if the characters weren't true to the ideals of the Federation - that idea of Roddenberry's that humanity would eventually rise above the petty squabbles of money and resources. That said, this also feels like the least idealized Star Trek - there are still petty squabbles, because people are still people.
@Skeezer663 ай бұрын
It would be weird to me if people didn't think this as canon Trek. While it's animated, we already had the cartoon version of classic Trek from the 70's. That show was more grounded in 'reality' while this one is more 'cartoony', but both adhere to essential Star Trek themes. In this story, people would be court martialed out, not 'fired', but no Trek is perfect!

I think the reason it works so well is that it isn't a parody, it's just funny Star Trek. Star Trek is in on the jokes instead of being the butt of all the jokes. I think my biggest fear going into the show is that it was just going to be making fun of Star Trek the whole time, and it's never felt that way to me. 5 seasons of this is not going to be nearly enough.

The secret sauce is that it is deeply in love with Trek. It mocks in gentle jest and love! It is not self-impressed and solely concerned with tearing down that which has already been known and joked at, without ever actually building anything of its own. Lower Decks may offer feedback, but out of consideration, and it goes on to build things of its own on the existing framework.

IMHO, Lower Decks is one of the *most* Star Trek of Star Treks, something I hope you'll come to appreciate more as the show goes on. There are a load of amazing stories coming up that are among the best episodes of Trek that I've seen, and I can't wait for your reactions to them. (And, for the avoidance of doubt, I've seen _all_ of official Trek.) I disagree that it's a parody, however, as I consider parodies to be denigrating or otherwise punching down on their source material, whereas LD _reveres_ Star Trek while making a comedy about it.
@librarianists3 ай бұрын
While I agree with your points overall, I don't think that parody *necessarily* denigrates or punches down-something I'd more likely ascribe to satire's penchant to ridicule. For example, _Galaxy Quest_ is a pitch perfect parody that clearly loves its source material. Perhaps it veers closer to homage, but it's definitely poking fun at some of Trek's-and fandom's-conventions. (As it were.)
