For those who were confused, not only by the flow, the beat, and maybe the video let me explain. The flow is a 90s flow. More precisely, the boombap era. Both Eminem and Royce are the sons protégé and emissaries of that era. The beat? Pretty much the same explanation. The video is also from that era where the artistic directors of the time loved using the stark black-and-white format to relay the harsh realities of the day. “Ring the alarm, the caterpillar keeps firing…” Is a riff on: “Ring the alarm, another sound is dying…” This gets deep. The song ring the alarm is originally by reggae artist Tenor Saw. The phrase is a call to action. Tenor, at the time was calling for action against the injustice, and inequality of the day. To take notice of what was going on around them. Later this sample would be used in the song of the same name by the group Fu-Schnikens. Eminem and I are close to the same age and have all of the same favorite artists from that time. In that instance, they were talking about rappers of the day being the “sounds“ that were dying. But also that they were the ones that were killing them as far as competition. Believe it or not, this was around the time that things were changing. EPMD had released the song “the crossover” in which they were giving a dissertation on how R&B was being injected into hip-hop, to influence it as opposed to hip-hop, influencing R&B, which was happening at the time as well. Basically, things were getting soft and that was the prediction for rap as well. This song is Royce and Eminem’s call to action…to this generation that we are at another crossroad, but they are rising to take action. Edit: Oh! And Em just standing there waiting is also a ‘trope’ of that era’s videos. Also, the production of the video using the torn images like pictures with masking tape is something that would have been done and had been done in some videos of the 90s. Even the typography… What y’all call font is in a 90s style. For an example of this go and Google to find a picture of the shirt from back in the day that said “it’s a black thang you wouldn’t understand”
