Metroid only used one byte to store the missile count, so 255 was the maximum that could be represented (binary 11111111).

It's weird how Kid Icarus, which ran on the same map, had the currency on a range of 1000.

@@SuperN1ntendoChalmers it depends on whether the devs stored a value in one byte or two, two bytes being the maximum the 8-bit NES could handle in a single operation(2 assembly MOV instructions), allowing values up to 65,535 to be stored in a variable. For currency, higher limits make more sense, for ammo, who needs more than 255 missiles at a time when that memory could be used for something else?

Which is the same cap that could be contained with 2-digits at base 16 too (Or "hex" if you prefer), with "FF" being the highest, equalling 255 also in normal numbers. That cap was very common in a lot of NES games especially, like the rupees cap in the original Zelda game too. This always mystified me as a child, "why such an odd number?". But we know now.

255 is the maximum number you can store as an unsigned integer in a byte (that starts at 0), so I would assume that's the number in Metroid. It's also just a really common max number of all sorts of variables in old game for obvious reasons.

Fun fact: In the base game of V Rising where you build a character from a fledgling vampire to a direct rival of a reborn Dracula, Simon Belmont is the most powerful enemy you can face in the base game. He even has a special arranged version of "Simon Belmont's Theme" (The official name of the song from Castlevania IV's first stage) playing when you fight him. There's even a Castlevania dlc that allows you to skin the castle you build as a base in a SotN theme. To fight Simon, however, no DLC is required.

So, 1.0 seems to be a lot easier than 1.1. In 1.1, the whip does its normal damage to Dracula, so 3 for the thunder, I think 2 for flame, and 16 for ice, but you can hit him multiple times.

In regards to the flame dash, you did use it a lot to where it became second nature. So if someone didn’t spam the flame dash like you did, I don’t think it would be as hard.

To be fair, a lot of the flames he didn't know how to dodge during the Dracula fight, it came to first nature to me to just think "Jared, you know you have a double jump, and can just dash over the flames until the attack is over, right? Why aren't you double-jumping?", but then he found that cheese with the initial flame dash hitbox to negate every single flame attacks and stood there like "...Wow, nevermind, that's definitely more broken than I thought" As broken as it seems, I don't know if they can fix that dash spam hitbox without making it impossible to get certain collectables, like the one at the end of the long water path with the constant horned knights flying by, which would constantly block you from getting to the other side if you didn't have a way to re-enable the hitbox to get through...Balance is a difficult thing in the end of it all...Maybe just adding an innate cooldown of a second or a bit more to avoid the heavy spam during that fight could be a solution? Hell if I know, I don't design games for a living.

@@LyuSapphire Or just give the flames more HP so that the flame dash won't destroy them, but most of your weapons still can. That way if you try to flame dash through the flames, you'd just take damage instead after hitting them. The flame dash deals 4 damage, so give Dracula's fireballs 5 HP.

For suggestions for a ROM hack basically the now translated SNES Final Fantasy VI T Edition + EX Hack. Takes a bit of effort and reading the directions to get it running right but is significantly altered and expanded as a mod of the game in many ways that doesn't change it so much as to not be FF VI in all regards. Probably would be quite a bit of work to 100% for all the new expanded content but certainly one of the best ROM hacks I've played.

@@wd6358 Two different games. Super Metroid chose 230 Missiles (5 per Tank) because they wanted a maximum of 100 collectible items (upgrades and expansions) to make the ending score easier to calculate. NEStroid didn't care about ending collection rates, just completion time.

Well, Jared showed me I am *bad* at the Meteor Dash. I even _tried_ using it against Dracula the day before this episode went live on KZbin - so before I saw it - and couldn't seem to block most of the projectiles. I usually use the Bible to block the projectile spam and just rely on whipping to damage Dracula (in either form). I also did a play through where I restricted myself to the Knife - that's the one where I tried the Meteor Dash against Dracula - and I found it easier to just triple Knife while kinda learning the attack patterns. I mean, with the Healing Strike and max health; I am *not* good enough to beat Dracula with less (at least, while using the Knife). If restricting myself to (mostly) the Knife sounds weird, I got curious how the different weapons would work if you relied (almost) solely on them. I make exceptions for things like Laurel (might as well heal), accidentally picking something up (just to goof off; mostly seems to be Stop Watches I accidentally grab XD), and if I think I don't need to "prove" something. Oh, and for anything not available at that point in the game. For example, I think only the Axe, Knife, Stop Watch, and Holy Water show up before the first boss.

If he chooses to pursue it, my trick for the money was the glass creature duo in front of the Medusa room. Paired with the rosary, each full clear of the room was upwards of 50 gold per. Plus you could restore a number of hearts from the candles, if not more paired with the heart strike card once you get it.

To grind money, buy the card that triples cash drop but you die in one hit. Then farm the fishmen in the beginning. Add corpse run if concerned with your skill.

So funny you didn't realized there is a card to farm your money. Use the corpse card and you would get 3 times the money and go back towards the beginning and go in and out the room. Easy collect $1000 within 5 mins.

I think the thing about buying the cards is that it probably wouldn't have been grindy if A) You hadn't lost around 2k at the beginning B) You didn't dash past all the enemies for the last hour of gameplay That said, I'm not complaining, this was a great playthrough.

Shout outs to the Secret of Mana Moogles... They exist, and it's the worst status ailment in the game to be turned into one. Nothing filled me with more dread in the game than being hit with something and seeing the top of the screen say "[Character] has been Moogled!".... Well, maybe Ballooned.
