Since I got my SNES back in 1992 I would receive video games mostly as gifts for Christmas and my birthday. Some notable games I got were Super Mario Bros 3 (played on my brother’s NES), Super Mario All Stars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4 Turtles in Time, my Nintendo 64 with super Mario 64, and also my GameCube with Super Smash Bros Melee.

About the box thing, my Mother once did something similar thing. This one was sidewise though and had a lid, but it was still big enough for me to lay in. She filled it with packing penuts and I had to find all the gifts inside. It was a lot of fun and I played with the box afterwards. Pretty sure we have a picture somwhere of me in it. That was probably between 2007 and 2011.

I did not get a lot of games growing up, before being able to buy them myself. The only one I remember getting for Christmas was my Genesis with Sonic 2 included and I'm pretty sure I got Sonic and Knuckles that time too. Thank god renting video games was a thing back then.

Christmas 96 I also got an N64. Our oldest brother hid it and left clues throughout the house for us to try and find it. It was in the dryer.

Merry Christmas Jared! Merry Christmas ya'll! My fondest and clearest memory was when I was 12 and I received the PlayStation 2 and Final Fantasy X from my parents. At the time in 2001, I was still playing on N64 and even Sega Genesis. I loved games, but we couldn't afford it much. So to get an all new console AND an RPG (it was my introduction to FF), was SO AWESOME! They picked it out saying they figured it sounded like a game I would like. I LOVE that game to this day! I have such fond memories of my little brother watching me play through that wonderful, wonderful game. 🎄🎁 Much love everyone from Arizona 🏜️

Merry Christmas! As Jared was telling the story I was thinking to my self "man, Jared's fokes sounds rich! They must have some good jobs and get a lot of money." His mom worked at walmart.... I feel so bad thinking this. So now I think "Man, life must of been much more reasonable to afford back in the 90s" Am I cooked? I think I am done, I feel like I can't afford anything :(

Your N64 story sounds similar to mine. My sister and I asked for the N64 for Christmas of '97, and my parents weren't sure they'd be able to get it. On Christmas morning we both got a handful of gifts, but a couple in the back were addressed to both of us and we had to open those together. The first one was Mario Kart 64..., which could only mean the remaining box was the N64. Then my dad had to hook it up to the TV after staying up late, and we played almost the whole day.

Funny thing is, I got Super Mario World and an SNES for Christmas when I was 6. In fact, it was literally the first time I ever played a game, making that my first game.

In 2000, I had just turned 5 and was learning to read by absolutely locking in on my sisters copy of Pokemon Red and her GameBoy Colour. My mother noticed this, and got me my own GameBoy Colour, Pokemon Crystal, and the worm light. I still remember how happy I was. Even as I got older and got things like a GameCube, a PS3 or even a replacement for my broke PS2 - nothing topped my very own GameBoy and a new Pokemon game.

In the early-mid 90's absolutely fell in love with Secret of Mana. I think I made my parents rent it for me from our local Hollywood Video three times between discovering it and Christmas that year. So, for Christmas, they got me both the game and the strategy guide. I unfortunately don't have my original physical game anymore (it stopped functioning about five years later, and I think it was used from that Hollywood Video even before I played it to death), but I do still have the strategy guide.

Bro you still alive? I haven't had a single one of your effing video show up on my feed in months and I've been subbed for years. Man screw YT and its algos. I made sure to choose "all" this time. At least I have vids to binge watch while I'm off this week.

The availability of games in Canada in the 90s kinda sucked. I remember really wanting Harvest Moon and somehow my parents could not find it. I could find stuff at "Roger's video" but not in stores where I could buy them. (Rogers is not a mom and pop store, but a part of what is now a massive cell phone corporation) I think I beat Link to the Past by spending like 100 bucks in constant rentals. Kirby's Adventure was similar, but since it was linear, I beat it much more easily. Definitely glad I found both of these games though. I definitely envy you raiding you brother's rooms for hidden treasures, sounds kinda exciting and perilous. 😅

I’ll share my favorite Christmas gift story too. Growing up my family was really poor, but my dad always tried his best to make the holiday special. One year he told me we couldn’t afford gifts that year, I was like 10. I was sad but understood. Anyways, every year his job would give him a Christmas turkey. So he said I could open the box so it felt like a gift. Inside the box was my very own PS1 system. I think about that day all the time. I miss my father, but I have plenty of wonderful memories he left me. Rest in peace dad 💖

Some of them came with a game guide in Germany. Of these games, Super Metroid and Illusion of Gaia/Time came with them.
