There’s a ‘making of’ video about how difficult it was for them to pull this off, before samplers. It’s almost as good as the tune itself. It took them weeks to track this one.

Yep, UK, these guys started out as studio & song writing enthusiasts, writing for, recording & producing other artists before trying it themselves. They originated as two camps, lead singer, guitarist, keyboardist Eric Stewart with bassist & back up vocalist Graham Gouldman, these guys wrote this song & Eric sang lead vocals. The other camp was lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist Lol Creme & vocalist & drummer Kevin Godley. These guys were far more left field & experimental & were responsible for the multi layered vocal effects on this song which were done with multiple tape loops, along similar lines to the mellotron technology used in the Moody Blue's "Nights in White Satin". This came out in '75 & was ground breaking for it's time. Remember "Bohemian Rhapsody" also came out the same year using multi tracked vocals. This song is an innovative pop masterpiece from their brilliant album "The Original Soundtrack" . Do yourself a BIG favor & review the opening track "One Night in Paris" both parts together, Eric & Lol share lead vocals, the high register vocals you will hear is not a woman it's Lol, you will not believe it. Shortly after the two camps split, Eric and Graham continued as 10CC and Lol and Kev went on to form Godley & Creme (check these guys out too, very imaginative, recommend their hit "An Englishman in New York"). A few more of the many great 10CC tracks are: "I'm Mandy fly me", "Rubber bullets", "Wall street shuffle" , "Art for Art's sake", "Life is a Minestrone" , "The thing's we do for love" and "Feel the benefit". Enjoy the 10CC journey, cheers.

@@leodejongful Yeah in those days it was all analogue DIY, I think I recall an interview with Lol where he described how they had all these tape loops strung around microphone stands feeding into tape heads. I mean this is creative genius!!!

Actually the singer's DEEPLY in love. He's desperately attempting to convince her (and probably himself) he's not in love to subdue the extreme pain of losing her.
@thomkopal17402 жыл бұрын
No doubt - the guy's absolutely DEVASTATED by love. Gotta put this in context of masculine expectations at the time - can't be vulnerable, and giving in to emotions is a sign of weakness. Power dynamics under toxic masculinity placed constraints on what could be admitted to others and to one's self. So deeply melancholy! Perfect!!

Loved your reaction Pope, this is a beautiful song. 10cc are indeed British and they're a great band with a very eclectic range of sounds, styles and clever songwriting. This song is tongue - in - cheek, as the singer's [Eric Stewart] wife complained that he never told her he loved her, [even though he did], so he wrote this in ironic form. May I suggest "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" and "Silly Love" for two different styled songs for your listening pleasure. These are just a drop in the ocean in their vast sea of material, but I think you'll love them both. Peace.

Very varied styles for 10cc - the Beatles of the 70's? Check out Wall Street Shuffle, Rubber Bullets, Feel The Benefit or Art For Art's Sake to get an idea or their range. (They even made a mini-musical: One Night in Paris.) As for the meaning: if you keep repeating you're not in love, are you really NOT in love? The most important passage are the three dots after "It's because..."

And it was originally all done on analogue; something like 250 vocal tracks - incredible texture! BTW the group’s name, “10cc”was the British equivalent of America’s “Lovin’Spoonful” in other words the average amount of male ejaculate. Boys being naughty.

British band formed in 1972 with two pairs of writers Godley and Creme, and Stewart and Gouldman who split in 1976 with Stewart and Gouldman carrying on as 10cc. Brilliant lyrics often funny and satirical but the music was always interesting. Suggest, Rubber Bullets, Worst band in the world, Second sitting for the last supper, Somewhere in Hollywood, The Wall Street shuffle, one Night in Paris, I’m Mandy fly me, and Art for arts sake, for songs up to the split.

Incredibly forward-thinking pop, both in terms of ambient soundscapes and analog sampling. The album this song is on is a raucous progressive conceptual pop masterpiece. The song's rhythm backing sounds a lot like something Supertramp would put out. Thanks for the reaction! Modern Progressive/Chamber Pop artist Kelsey Lu did a great rendition of this song for her album Blood, another must-listen!

Its about a fella who is trying to deny to himself and to the one he loves that he really isnt in love with her no matter what it looks like to her or her friends, so hes saying to her dont read into him calling her on the phone, as its no big deal it doesnt mean she has his love, & dont ask for her picture back, he has of her hanging on the wall, jbecause he just uses it to hide a nasty stain on his wall, lol nice ! & the thought of not being with her he tells himself big boys dont cry on repeat, and that youll wait a long time for him, meaning so dont bother waiting for his love, poor fella is too scared to admit he has fallen so in love its heavenly & then feeling grief of letting go, its brilliant changes emphasize the changes in the euphoric feeling of love & the other dimension of loss. Thats a bit of my attempt briefly to translate what is a beautfully captured experience of falling in love.
