She hasn’t given proper care because she not capable of doing so. It’s been an ongoing situation probably her entire adult life. Doesn’t excuse the behavior and doesn’t explain it. Unfortunately it’s a situation that is far more common than you think. Not all cases are public. I don’t have the answers. Only tears for all the little ones that get left behind. .

Most likely a major depressive episode. This isn’t an excuse, she still neglected her kid by not asking for help and will hopefully be charged for this. But she likely didn’t get out of bed much and had food delivered. You don’t have to eat a lot to gain weight if you’re burning a negligible amount of calories. It doesn’t work the same way in a kid who will be more affected by malnutrition. This situation is similar to someone with SI who leaves behind a dependent. I perform autopsies and have received more than one body on multiple occasions because of this.

I had to run from a DV marriage. I have two sons, I obviously took them, and a bag. That’s it. I had NOTHING, but I always fed my children. I lost so much weight. I went from a European size 12, to a size 6. I’m sure it was mostly stress, but I didn’t eat for days. It is what you do! It shouldn’t even be questioned. Feeding your child is instinctual.

Same here. If my kid wants more food and there's a limited amount of something, I just let her take it right off my plate, no questions asked. I did it even before I got gastric bypass surgery that shrank my stomach to just 3 oz. She's always welcome to my food or drinks unless it has excess caffeine or alcohol in it. She's such a blessing that I can't imagine depriving her of most things that she wants (within reason, of course) let alone the things that she needs. I love her so much. It's a serious case where they want to make sure they've done everything right, to a T, so it doesn't hurt the case. At that point, they didn't even know if the baby would survive! And it's a hugely serious case either way. This isn't a traffic violation, and if she genuinely has some back problem that he ignored, and the cuffs made worse, the police department might get into some trouble. She's also not high risk to have the cuffs in front - she's too big to slip or escape the cuffs, and not resisting.
