@@neilphelan145 Hi Neil and thank you. I wasn't born until a few years after Piper at the Gates was released, but I do love it. I got into Floyd in the 80s as a teen. Lots of good old classic psychedelic tracks on that album and Syd was still there back then, I think he wrote See Emily Play if I remember correctly. Floyd enable the philosopher in all of us :)

I was given this concert on VHS for Christmas in 1994. I had been in love with Pink Floyd since I was 8 hearing my older brother play Dark Side of the Moon. Dave Gilmour plugs his guitar into his soul not an amplifier, and takes you away with him. Listen to the albums through headphones. Listen to the concerts. Let your soul go free and join us down the rabbit hole....

Pink Floyd is an experience. One does NOT listen to Pink Floyd you experience Pink Floyd. I tell all reactors that they need to take the time to do an entire album rather than a single song. Each song on their albums is a page in the story each album tells. This one is from The Wall and this song is the point where the character Pink is falling into his depression and unable to get up and perform. The chorus is sung by David Gilmour, who is a guitar god, the verses were originally sang by Roger Waters and he was fired from the band so in this one Richard Wright who plays the keyboards. So do yourself a favor and take the time to do an entire album. You can do just the audio and lyrics and the album will truly make sense. You’ll thank me for it.
@lathedauphinot6820
@lathedauphinot6820 2 жыл бұрын
Waters wasn’t fired. Not really. He quit, or at least he announced that the band was retiring. He’d announced earlier that he’d fired Rick Wright. David Gilmour and Nick Mason had other ideas, and made plans to continue with Wright and without Waters, who sued them to make them quit, saying the “Pink Floyd” name was his. He lost. You’re right about it being an experience. I didn’t realize until I saw them live that the music is the greatest part but only part of the experience, along with video, lights, and props, moving objects, etc. Like nothing else I’ve seen.

The first time Pink Floyd stepped into a recording studio together, a label exec walked up to them, and handed them a giant book titled "The Correct Way to Make a Hit Rock and Roll Song." Pink Floyd said "Thank you," flipped through a few random pages, then tossed the book out the window, and set about reinventing Rock music, from the ground up.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 200 shows I’ve seen. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS

The best way to properly listen to Pink Floyd is to put on one of their albums and listen to it all the way through. It puts your mind in a completely different place. They had their share of hit songs, but just listening to a song out of the context of the album it came from is less than the complete experience. That said, my recommendations for other songs by Pink Floyd are : "Breathe," "The Great Gig in the Sky," "Time," "Wish You Were Here," and "Have a Cigar."

I would add dogs and shine on you crazy diamond. But all need to be enjoyed in context of the album from start to finish. Then the rabbit hole of the bootleg live recordings from 72,73,75 and 77 where albums were performed in entirety or like in 72 the entire dark side album was performed before it was released in its early form.

Have loved this band since I first heard them playing Arnold Layne 1967, went right out and got my first Floyd album "Piper at the gates of Dawn." I believe " Dark side of the Moon" is just something way beyond brilliant. (In my humble opinion.) Best enjoyed lying in a dark room, can's on, sipping on a smooth single malt, or better still, a little bowl of something, your toally immersed, in a feeling of absolute delight, transported to a higher "etheral" place, got to be the nearest thing to an "out of body experience," whilst still alive. Simply awesome.

In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band. “That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm.

There's a reason it's #2 on my list of all-time favorites.... Only second behind "Amazing Grace". Your reaction at the guitar solo is how I feel every time I listen to the entire song. It's haunting, yet calming.....When I pass, I want Amazing Grace to be sung, and the guitar solo from this played as they lower me into the ground........

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION… I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

Easily the best (and most out-of-body) marriage of music and imagery ever created by a popular music group. The entire concert is a work of peak-level artistry, and not only overwhelms the senses, but lingers in the back of one’s brain afterwards, like a haunting. That solar eclipse that opens the big guitar solo here, alone, is enough to silence a crowd into a state of pure awe. Pure magnificence.

It is a strange dichotomy of human nature how the expression of suffering and pain can be so incredibly moving. I can't think of one Floyd song that is a pure expression of happiness, yet we still somehow find great joy in it

This is my partners favourite so g and wants it played at his funeral. We had such amazing music in the 70’s and 80’s and we took it for granted that we would always have great music but unfortunately that is not so. Thank god for KZbin and the old video’s that take us right back to that time way back when. Thanks for sharing.

Studio version is a must, friend. These guys redefined what recording quality meant. You wanna test a stereo's full range? Pink Floyd. Stunning engineering and production. That they even come close live is pretty mind-blowing. But check out the studio. You've just discovered the band that no other band has ever come remotely close to sounding like. They are in a class of their own. I know you hear that about groups, but trust me, Pink Floyd is THAT band. Their album Dark Side of the Moon was on the top 200 album charts for sales for 917 weeks -- the longest of any album ever. 52 weeks in a year, so... 17 YEARS, it held off the competition and was a hot selling album. It's fucking amazing and meant to be listened to from start to finish as an experience, not as tracks. But you can listen to any song off Dark Side and you'll be hooked in. Always listen to the album versions first, then the live. Try: Wish You Were Here Learning to Fly Money Time Mother Great Gig in the Sky Have a Cigar The Wall There are dozens. Start there. :)
