Classic Rick James, a funk legend. He was crazy as hell, but super talented. You definitely need to do Super Freak, Fire and Desire (a duet with Teena Marie), Give It To Me Baby, Mary Jane, Ebony Eyes (a duet with Smokey Robinson), You And I, and Cold Blooded.

The vibraphone (xylophone) player is jazz artist Roy Ayers. He has his own albums. Probably his most popular songs are "Running Away", "Everybody Love The Sunshine" & "Searchin' ".

Rick's first really great cut was "You And I", and it really is perhaps the prime example of his style of "punk funk". His song "Mary Jane" is IMO his wittiest. However, "Give It To Me Baby" was great as well. His duet with Teena Marie "Fire And Desire", his greatest ballad (better than "Ebony Eyes" IMO) shows that Rick could actually sing as well. Teena's vocals though destroys that cut.

Random fact. In 1966, Ricky James Matthews was the lead singer of a Canadian band, The Mynahbirds. They got signed to MOTOWN. The guitarist quit abd was replaced by a then unknown Neil Young. Then Ricky got busted for being AWOL from the US Navy. MOTIWN dropped the band. Neil and bassist Bruce Palmer drove to LA a d founded Buffalo Springfield. Later Ricky got out of the brig and got signed as a songwriter for MOTOWN*⁰. He changed his name and became Rick James.

I literally used to have a party in my car with this song it has all the climactic sounds of a party along with the base and the lyrics. Back in the early '80s. I had the best HiFi system in the neighborhood along with the best Chicano lowrider. I've always liked the way they Incorporated the deep sax with the Deep base. Rick James credited prison time for saving his life. Couple years later he dies of an overdose. He created a song regarding his bust. It's a kind of reggae mix. The name of the song is Down By Law.

I’m sure you’ve heard the song “ Super Freak”, but probably didn’t know who it was, and probably heard the song “ Can’t Touch This “ by M C Hammer, and didn’t know where that music came from( it came from Super Freak). Just one of the many legendary funk jams of Rick James, who had many hits from the 70’s to the 90’s. You have a deep rabbit hole to dive into when you talk about Rick James, who also was a legendary songwriter and producer, musician , arranger and entertainer, who even did a little acting also. He’s so much more than the guy Dave Chappelle portrayed. I wish he was still living and healthy, he would still be dropping the jams. Unfortunately his fast lifestyle outlasted him , may he Rest In Peace , his musical legacy lives on and on!
