This whole album and their following one were written and produced by Nile Rodgers the genius behind the group CHIC, (along with Bernard Edwards, the bassist and co-producer) and who has produced huge hits and albums for people like Madonna, Duran Duran, David Bowie, George Michael, Diana Ross and many more. He plays the main rhythm guitar. He, along with Bernard Rogers (RIP), the other founder of CHIC, are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll and Roll Hall of Fame.

Wow. I knew you'd get to Sister Sledge eventually, but I was sure it would be with "We Are Family" (which was so popular that year that it became the rally song of the Pittsburgh Pirates as they came from behind to win the World Series that year). There's those Niles Rogers of Chic neat guitar riffs that makes his productions so recognizable along with his now deceased partner Bernard Edwards on bass. Also a great example of family harmony vs the harmony with distinct voices like Crosby, Stills and Nash. The lead is Kathy who was the sister with touch of grit in her vocal delivery making her voice distinct from her sisters. A great Sister Sledge tune is Lost In music.

Two things about this record…first…that signature Nile Rodgers rhythm guitar…he actually has two different riffs on this…and the breakdown….this was the era of the Disco 12” singles…single songs that were pressed on album sized vinyl instead of the smaller 45’s…so that they could contain an extended dance mix of these songs…ready-made for the clubs. Good Times by Nile’s group Chic was the ultimate 12” record…the breakdown was epic…so much so, that it became a Hip-Hop culture anthem…hence the usage by the Sugarhill Gang on Rappers Delight…it was the hottest break to use at that time.

"We Are Family" is suggested so much for good reason: it's the theme song for every close knit family & circle of friends with an infectious beat. You'll love it! 🙂

The entire Chic sound, backing vocals and instrumentation. Can't wait for you all to hear the post-disco R&B and synth keyboard era and more Philly sound. First Choice, D-Train, and more of the original songs sampled in Jay's fave rap tracks.

I will never apologize for loving disco! I miss those days when these ladies graced the billboards top 💯 and laid down some of the smoothest sounds and driving beats! I love all kinds of music but when I gotta move only disco will scratch that itch!

Legendary Sister Sledge, love them. A sample of this song was taken by Will Smith for his song called Gettin Jiggy wit it in 1997. Could you please react to Journey's song called Mother Father, it's an awesome song, great guitar solo.😎👌🎸

This song personified the disco era for me. The clothes, the style, the attitude, the sound, the dance moves, the beat. This is disco all wrapped up in one song.

Gotta give a shout out to one of the greatest guitarists who ever played the instrument…Mr. Nile Rodgers. He was a member of Chic and loaned his immense talent to everyone from Diana Ross to David Bowie to Daft Punk. He’s the GOAT…for real! ❤

Awesome song! I know I've heard some of it before, but not the whole thing. Thanks for choosing it today, Amber. I'd like to impress upon you a particular song from Christina Aguilera..."You Lost Me" from 2010. And the ideal way to experience this song is to watch Christina's live performance of it on Late Night With David Letterman. It's a treat, I think you'll love it!

It’s been years! Hearing this song. Sister Sledge were the darlings of disco. This song put these ladies on the map and yes they are real life sisters. The debut track was produced by Nile Rodgers bassist for the group CHIC. That group also had enormous success, with hit after hit records during the disco decade.

I loved this group! May have had something to do with the fact that they sang "We Are Family" that in 1979 was the Rally song for my Pittsburgh Pirates. Who came from behind to win the World Series. Willie "Pops" Stargell was just the best. It was the year that all the Pittsburgh teams won, the Steelers won the Super Bowl, the Pirates won the World Series and the Penguins win the Stanley Cup! And the city was .. "All Family"!!! But this song and the whole album (yes album) was fire!!! Nile Rodgers was famous for his bass, you can recognize it in all his songs!! I remember dancing at the disco to this song!!🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛

In NYC dance clubs in the 1970s, they would play extended versions of this great song that would last 15-20 minutes .. .it was like being in a trance, dancing out there, getting into it.

One of my favorite memories is I had a huge crush on Kathy, the lead singer, I was working at Disney the summer of 85 n 86, back then Disney had something called the summer concert series, the had a bunch of groups come n perform on weekends, one night I was there working n I took my break, I was out back overlooking where the busses dropped off the employee at the tunnel to the underground Disney, I was out there n a bus pulled up n sister sledge got off, I freaked out n yelled, I love you Kathy, she yelled back, I love you too bby, I will never forget that !!! With that said, my favorite song by them is " we are family " !!!

The Disco era was definitely a time when it was considered really cool for guys to show off their dance moves ala Saturday Night Fever. We were certainly movin and groovin to the Sisters. As others have mentioned "We are Family" was one of their greatest hits and became a Disco Anthem, as was the Village People's YMCA. I would like to recommend another all-female group from the mid-80s, Klymaxx. A couple of their hits were "Meeting in the Ladies Room" and "The Men All Pause," both fun songs, a good Female Friday choice.

J would love the legendary bass grooves of the late Bernard Edwards , on so many songs that he and Nile Rodgers(them him on his signature guitar riff) did as Chic and so many songs like this that they wrote, produced and arranged for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, and so many other artists!

Thank you for playing the long version and not the radio edit. This brings back so many memories. Most songs back in the day had instrumental breaks in the middle and that's where the big hustle moves come in.
