This song always got a bad rep for being satanic or something. But really it’s an anti-establishment, anti-corporate. Basically hair metal’s version of punk. 😀 Vince Neil’s vocals are fire!

I was in middle school when this album came out and my mom was a little skeptical about it after seeing the title and album cover. To be fair, this was the same time that metal bands were REALLY embracing pentagrams and whatnot as part of their style so you can understand why people made assumptions. Of course, many of us understood that it was all stylistic touches to push buttons and create a "metal" image. An equivalent situation in the hip-hop world was when rappers started flashing the "illuminati" hand signs and such. It's all theater.

If anything, I always thought it had to be anti-Satanic, because they are "shouting" at the devil...And I don't think the devil would particularly care for people "shouting" at him..."Hey, devil! Hey, devil! You think you're bad?"
@bgaona
@bgaona 2 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanlocke6404 agree. The lyrics and the tone are completely at odds with devil worship. But this has always been strange to me because this band has cultivated a satanic image and embraced complete hedonism in their lives.

1983 was the year metal started to reach the top of the charts. Before that, it had cult fans, but got zero radio airplay or MTV play. Quiet Riot and Def Leppard being so huge was bringing metal into the spotlight. By 1986, metal was so big, record companies were stepping in and making their bands decide if they were going to be real metal ( slayer, metallica etc), or if they were Cinderella /Poison type hair band. They figured they could make more money marketing to a particular audience - hair metal was more a female audience. Unfortunately, these decisions kinda killed some bands careers. Judas Priest went hair metal for an album, but then redeemed themselves big-time with Painkiller ( def real metal). Some bands like Iron Maiden, completely ignored their record companies and still to this day, do what they do

Cinderella & Poison & Ratt & Winger & W.A.S.P. were "Glam Metal." Boy bands with harder riffs & spandex - manufactured by record execs. Priest, Maiden, & Dio never wavered from what they were about. I mean, even 'Turbo" wasn't COMPLETE trash. Although we did joke about being able to do aerobics to "Turbo Lover." 🤡 Hell - even Alice Cooper tried to get in on the scene with "Poison" & "Feed My Frankenstein." And Ozzy - look at his HAIR during "Shot In The Dark" & "Bark at the Moon." Hehehe. 🤘☠️🤘

I grew up on Motley Crue... posters, albums, history, memorabilia, everything. Saw them twice, once with replacement singer John Corabi in 1994 Anywhere There's Electricity tour with Type O Negative and Deicide opening at the Quincy, Illinois Raceways and once with Vince Neil in 2005 Carnival of Sins tour in St. Louis, Missouri. Motley Crue is bassist Nikki Sixx's band. He owns the Motley Crue name. Guitarist Mick Mars wanted to name the band "Christmas". LOL Nikki (born Frank Carlton Serafino Farrano) was inspired by the Sex Pistols and other punk bands. So Motley Crue is an 80s hair-rock version of punk rock. Nikki's mother was a backup singer for Tommy Dorsey (big band era), and his father left the family when he was young. He hated his dad so much he legally changed his name to 'Nikki Sixx'. His grandparents raised him in Idaho. His grandmother died in 1986. The song NONA that can be found on the Girls, Girls, Girls album was about her and dedicated to her. When Nikki got older and had kids of his own, he came to terms about his father and wanted to reunite with him only to find out it was way too late, his father died an alcoholic in 1986 and Nikki didn't even know about it until he (Nikki) was in his 40s. Nikki met Mick Mars (born Bob A. Deal, but legally changed his name to Mick Mars because he considered his initials B.A.D. to be bad luck) when Mick walked into his record shop and they started bickering over guitars. Mick challenged him to go to the Troubadour club and watch Mick's band Spiders & Snakes. The whole incident was forgotten until Nikki was putting the band together, and Mick's ad in the Recycler ad magazine reading, "Loud, rude, aggressive guitar player" caught Nikki's attention. When Mick walked in, Nikki was like, "Aren't you that guy from the record shop ... you're that guy.... I hated you!" From the moment Mick joined Motley, Nikki and Mick were brothers... (Mick being older than the other members by a decade give or take). Nikki is so much of a fan of his own guitarist, he has a tattoo of Mick on his leg. When Tommy Lee (born Thomas Lee Bass to an American soldier, his mother was Miss Greece 1957) joined the band, they were still shopping around for a singer (even though they had this creepy guy at the time). Drummer Tommy Lee and singer Vince Neil went to high school together. Tommy suggested he knew a singer, but at the time he was in another band. Nikki said, "Who cares? We'll go steal him out of that band." Vince Neil (born Vince Neil Wharton) was already in a band called Rockandi. They did backyard parties type of thing. They only asked him to be in the band because he was the one guy in high school with the longest hair). Tommy called Vince up and asked him to come audition. Vince blew off the first audition and didn't even show up because he already had a sure thing with Rockandi and didn't know about this other band. It took him a couple of more times before he just said "screw it" and went down to audition for Motley. The Shout at the Devil album was a pretty solid album. It has a good cover of The Beatles HELTER SKELTER on it. I'm personally NOT a big fan of cover songs, but as far as a band covering HELTER SKELTER goes, Motley has the best version in my opinion. But then again, rule of thumb is: you should NEVER try to cover The Beatles. I could go on, rating every album and song probably... but KZbin has a cap on comment length. I've hit it a few times discussing Layne Staley of Alice In Chains.

This album and "Out Of The Cellar" by RATT were the 1st albums I bought with my own money. I was in 8th grade. I got a detention on more than one occasion reciting the spoken intro to this song that I had memorized while walking into class. And just because the Bungles swept the Steelers this year, you're still a long way away from 6 titles. 😁

You didn't even need to know who Motley Crue were, let alone be a "Metalhead" to stand in the living room at a packed house party and bang your head with the devil sign raised high. I only drive 100 miles to see concerts because I would work 6 days a week. I think for me Shout at the Devil my very favorite song then Too Young Too Fall in Love. Caught the Crue in 1984; they were opening for Ozzy.. killer show.. my seat was near the corner of the stage where the band left into the backstage area.. The silver "Shout at the Devil" T shirts were everywhere.. my girl was freaking out over Nikki Sixx, so she was screaming at him and she flashed him.. next thing I know.. Nikki calls her over and gave her his Gold Version of the Concert Tshirt that he had been wearing on stage.. Was a great night for me afterwards :P

"In The Beginning" is a spoken word prelude to this song on the album. It really does set the mood. I suggest going back and listening to them both, back-to-back.

I've been listening to this song for 35 (or whatever) years now (I'm old) and never knew the lyrics beyond the chorus. So thank you. Also, Amber's t-shirt is the bomb.

The visuals for hard rock / metal songs are just as important as the music. Reacting to lyrics only takes away from the experience especially for your first time reaction.

Motley Crue does have some slower songs like 'Without you' ... 'Home sweet home' ... "Don't go away mad (just go away)" ... But they are known for their heavier songs like "Dr. Feelgood" ... 'Primal scream'... 'Bitter pill' ... 'Same ol situation' ... 'Louder than hell' ... 'Live wire' ... 'Too young to fall in love' ... 'Piece of your action' ... 'Red hot'... 'Girls, girls, girls' 🔥🔥🤘🤘 When Motley Crue first got together in L.A. around 1980/ '81, they dressed in drag w/ big hair, makeup and high heels, but they looked menacing... the original band here is Vince Neil (vocals), Nikki Sixx (bass), Tommy Lee (drums) & Mick Mars (guitar)... They quit the 'glam' image in 1987 after bands like Poison, Faster Pussycat, Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Cinderella, etc. used the glam look... Despite being raw and unpolished, Motley Crue had hooks and melodies in their songs that made their 1st demo record 'Too fast for love' a hit back in 1981/ '82... They also knew how to put on a visual stage show. They were signed by 1983, and their 2nd album 'Shout at the devil' became a massive hit, selling 4 million copies in the US... as did the albums 'Theater of pain' (1985) and 'Girls, girls, girls' (1987)... Their biggest record came in 1989 - 'Dr. Feelgood', which went to #1 on the US charts & sold 6 million copies... However, after their best of album 'Decade of decadence' in 1991 sold 2 million copies, Motley Crue split w/ singer Vince Neil in 1992. Motley Crue hired singer John Corabi for their 1994 album 'Motley Crue'... despite being a great record, it sold poorly for a Crue record - half million in the US and the tour was poorly attended. Vince Neil returned in 1997 for the 'Generation swine' album, which was more electronic-beat oriented - that sold poorly as well. Drummer Tommy Lee left the band in 1999 and the subsequent 'New Tattoo' album in 2000, recorded w/ (late) drummer Randy Castillo was their worst-selling album. Motley split in 2002. Thankfully, the original Motley Crue experience a resurgence in popularity and reunited to tour arenas in 2005 w/ the original line-up.

This is back when they were actual metal. Not even "hair" metal, really... the cheesy pop rock and pretty boy stuff came later. This was glam, yeah, but more Alice Cooper style, and heavier. I saw them open for Ozzy back in this era, and they rocked. And Amber, she may be a soft soul, but she's got just a little bit of the devil in her, too. I've seen some of her pranks. 😄
