This song was from their second album, "Shout at the Devil" which was, in my opinion, their best. This was the song that introduced me to Motley Crue back in 1983. After this album they started to get more commercial sounding and "Pop" oriented. I'm sure many will disagree, but they were never the same to me.

Nah, you summed it up accurately. Started out edgy and dangerous, even controversial (Satanic Panic, anyone?), and then almost overnight, went all glam and radio-friendly with 1985's Theatre Of Pain. It's all good now, but back in the day, stigmas of criticism was harsh - metal and its loyal legions of metalheads had "standards" and there was no room for any mainstream fluff - musically, lyrically, or fashionwise. I think that might have been the beginnings of "chick metal", the bands that appealed to the girls (Cinderella, Europe, Poison, Warrant, etc - basically expanding on the KISS formula ; quartets, makeup, androgynous costumes, songs about sex, drugs, rock & roll - but especially sex and rock - etc), drawing in more females to the metal genre (and especially the concerts).

Y’all are rocking today. The Shout at the Devil album is definitely Crüe’s heaviest, coolest, & greatest album. For a further look at the album you gotta react to “Shout at the Devil”, their cover of The Beatles “Helter Skelter”, “God Bless the Children of the Beast”, “Ten Seconds to Love”, & “Too Young to Fall in Love”….at the beginning, they were not too glam…they looked like a cross between Kiss & Twisted Sister….more of a shock/creep vibe. LOVED IT then & now….🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

Hell yeah! SATD is still my top fave Crüe album, start to finish! Not a single bad track on it! I still remember back in the day, when all those mail-order music clubs were the rage, and I'd ordered this album (on cassette), eager to the album that was home to Looks That Kill (a song I'd heard on a Canadian compilation album called Masters Of Metal Volume I, K-Tel Records, 1984). As a teen I used to always lull myself to sleep at night with music, so I was excited to play my new Crüe tape... but after I turned out the lights and pressed play... That opening track with the horror movie soundscapes and the creepy narration, "In The Beginning", damn near made me wet myself, lol. I wasn't immune to horror yet, and that opening track freaked me out (I had the same problem with Michael Jackson's Thriller, during Vincent Price's "rap"). So until I got used to it, no more Crüe at bedtime, lol. (And no Thriller, either, haha!) Ahh, 1983... scaring the shit out of the day's youth from all musical genres.

@@kurtpflegl9724 The entire album is a volume of winners (not one bad track on there), but I'd have to say RED HOT is my fave from the whole album. That tempo, that energy, even referencing the title (Shout at the Devil, we laugh at your wars) made it an instant go-to from the day I first got the album.

@@BlackieNuffamigo….you are speaking my language!!! When I started listening to music beyond what my parents had me listening to, I discovered Mötley Crüe on HBO’s Video Jukebox after a Joan Jett video. I was hooked…after I started mowing lawns & earning my own money, I bought Shout at the Devil & Styx’s Kilroy was Here as my first albums. My parents tripped out of course, especially when I played “God Bless the Children of the Beast” & “In the Beginning” out loud in my room. By my 7th grade year, the Satanic Panic happened & they trashed all my tapes. Unfortunately for them, I saved a lot of my lawnmowing money & bought them all back. I sat them down & told them I’m too smart to be taking these lyrics too seriously…I just love the music….of course, they’ve always worried about my dressing in black look….I’ve always reassured them I’ll never go down no crazy path tho. But yeah, that whole album gives me the chills, especially “In the Beginning”….thanks for chatting my Metal brother 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

This song absolutely *kills*! I'm not a huge Motley Crüe fan, but I love this song. It's an insult to call it "hair" metal. It rocks way too hard. This is pure headbanging rock. 🤘🏼 Note: Their early look, which you're seeing here, was influenced by KISS. But as you see in later videos, they would drop the make-up.

They weren't hair metal in the poppy sense that took over most of the late 80's, but they were definitely hair metal in those days, with the obvious hairspray and Theatrical fashion.
@Steve-cm2ys
@Steve-cm2ys Жыл бұрын
@@proteusblack8913At this point (Shout at the Devil)' they were simply heavy metal. The "Hair metal" look and sound was just around the corner though and about to get big, yes. A lot of it was good, IMO, from other bands but I've always disliked that Crue got caught up in it to the degree they did. The Shout at the Devil look and sound was THE look and sound of this band, and I like little from them after that album.

If you read The Dirt you’ll notice that Nikki based this look for the band on the Mad Max movie franchise. Although I’m sure he was influenced by Kiss in general as well. The Shout At The Devil look though, it’s all from Mad Max.

Rant warning - and it’s not directed at any of you guys, so please don’t be offended. The term hair metal was coined by a critic referring to the many Motley Crue copycats who, as the term implies, often had little to offer beyond fabulous hair and pretty makeup. As a derogatory term it clearly doesn’t fit early Motley Crue. Over time it has unfortunately evolved into a genre descriptor though. And as far as genre and era goes, Motley Crue are of course the trailblazers. Not their fault that the copycats sucked. You know the original intention of the term derailed when you see it applied to Whitesnake, a band led by a scruffy (but brilliant) English blues rocker who rather late in his career moved to LA, got a stylist and recorded a major hit album at long last. What it has to do with those Motley Crue copycats is beyond me, but there you have it. I mean, what is the issue here? That a hard rock/metal band gets to number one? Or that a rock band incorporates pop elements into their songs? News flash: The Beatles did that from day one. Every rock band who ever scored a number one hit wrote pop songs. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a pop song. And Def Leppard’s Photograph is one of the finest pop songs ever written - (I’m praying for Miley Cyrus covering that one, she would slay it). The suffocating purism of some rock fans is tiresome - especially since they don’t even know what they’re talking about. Sorry about the rant. Again, it’s not directed at any of you guys, you just reminded me of that old BS, it has (obviously) annoyed me for decades.

This was early…For Crue. Kiss had already removed their makeup but still had a harder look as a regular band. This is Pre-Hair Band era… Quiet Riot set the bar by having the first “heavy metal” album to hit #1. After that…the world feasted on hard rock/ Heavy metal. Glam Rock or the Hair Band era came around a few years after and was in full swing by 1985… From 85-91…it ruled the world. Motley Crue was one of the tops in that time. Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, Bon Jovi, and Kiss….were the Top Glam Rock bands. Van Halen, GnR, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Tesla and AC/DC were never in the Glam Rock category but enjoyed enormous success in those years also. The late 80’s Rock era spawned dozens of bands…that had great success. Skid Row, MSG, Danger Danger, and so many more. I’m drawing a blank on how many there were. I lived and loved that time. The best of my life. I was 15 in 1985

Motley Crue's other major radio hit from about this time was "Shout at the Devil," which y'all would probably also consider dark. Early Motley Crue like this from 1983 was more "dark" in look and sound, partly because the hard rock/heavy metal of the early eighties was drawing on the early seventies for their sound, and horror-ish face makeup like Kiss wore was a minor trend in early seventies hard rock, also seen in early Alice Cooper. Other early eighties metal performers who donned it were Mercyful Fate and Wrathchild. Motley Crue's look during these early years also owed a lot to early seventies Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls.

Their first two albums were more heavy and they had that "Shock Rock" look to them. This is what I grew up with from them at first. They were very hard core at that time. Skulls, blood, flaming pentagrams etc. I still love it to this day.

⭐⭐⭐Their best album, i saw them during this time opening up for Ozzy at Madison Square Garden, Vince slapped my hand, Nikki was laying on floor playing his bass, Mick looked like crawled out of the grave..lol. That show changed my life and inspired me to put together my 1st band.⭐⭐⭐

When Motley Crue started in 1981, they wore a lot of makeup and dressed in heels and leather... They actually opened for Kiss on what was a disastrous 1982/ '83 tour for 'Creatures of the night' ... when Kiss had fallen in popularity. Motley was signed to Elektra Records in 1983, which also signed Dokken... later, Metallica and Tracy Chapman... and released their 2nd album 'Shout at the devil'... "Looks that kill" was the first music video and the 2nd was 'Too young to fall in love'... Many felt that 'Shout at the devil' was their heaviest record and it really was an iconic heavy metal record of the 80's, cited by KoRn, Green Day and Papa Roach as a huge influence. It sold 4 million copies in the US. Motley Crue spent 1984 opening a major tour for Ozzy Osbourne, and their record actually outsold Ozzy's 'Bark at the Moon' at the time and made the band one of the biggest acts of the 80's.

They were definitely inspired by Kiss. Honestly during the 70's and 80's it seems like everyone was. Kiss was an empire! There were Kiss comic books, movies, all kinds of merchandise.

I feel that Kiss were directly responsible for the Hair metal bands that we saw in the 80s, no doubt.

The wild hair and face paint was a 80’s thing. A lot of bands from then had the look.

Earlier Crue than you have seen up to this point. Lots of "shock" value in the imagery. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing. And for SURE they were implementing the KISS formula. It worked ;) Great song. Great album!

Rob Squad Reactions, love this song the whole Record was great I got to see them in concert it made my number one goal as a young person to actually see them in concert. It was super great, this was years and years ago there was so many people at this concert, who knew they were so many people all around my age that went. There was other rock and roll bands. I play that record so much I actually worn it out. I love Kiss also they were super great band as well. Thanks again for playing Motley Crue music.

Shout at the Devil was really framed and painted by Vince's vocals. Tom Werman did a masterful job making Vince sound like he did. After Shout Vince's vocals took A more commercial tone

First two Crue albums were the hardest and heaviest by far. Metal with a punk attitude. This album, “Shout At The Devil”, sold millions of albums with the record company not doing a single thing. No marketing, no calling DJs to get songs on the air, nothing. This album was passed around every single day in my high school. We’d stay after school and listen to it in the parking lot. Yeah, there was music available that was “better” and all. But nothing had us kids as pumped as this.

When Motley Crue came out in 1981 they were doing sort of a Kiss/Alice Cooper shock rock kind of thing with makeup and scary costumes, fire, etc. Then Shout at the Devil came out (this album) in 83, that was the height of the shock rock look. Then in 1985 with the release of theater of pain they changed to this really glammed up look. Girls Girls Girls they changed to a biker kind of look.
