The last part where he's screaming at his mother is a reality for so many kids. As a teacher, this song really helped me understand the rage that exists inside some of "my kids". I understand their behavior. I believe these words are what they are holding inside. Sad, but society does have this sickness of child abuse. (Just my 2 cents.)

The "Mommy" isn't about child abuse per sé: "This song is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them. In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it. Getting "Down With The Sickness" means accepting people for who they are so we can all function better."

As an abused young boy, you dream of the day that you can overcome your abuser. I've been there. I can't tell you, as a 55 year old man, how many punk, metal, and hard rock lovers I've met and spoken to over my life that came to HARD music through seeking empowerment. Disturbed is a band that acknowledges this. WHY are you out of the mainstream? WHY do you feel cast out, and unloved and "different?" Metal is a welcoming place where the misfits find each other. Aggressive music is a release, a catharsis. As Ozzy Osbourne said, for a lot of us, "Rock n roll is my religion and my law."

@@shapeach I absolutely agree, Disturbed hit that one out of the park on Sounds of Silence, and don't get me wrong, I actually do love a lot of their music but I'm older and don't allow the lyrics to get to me because a LOT of their songs are great to workout to, gets my adrenaline pumping, I just think about young minds and how much influence some of these lyrics have on younger people. At least Disturbed was a crazy good talent and probably the last of what great rock used to be, I just don't know where in the hell all of the great rock went in addition to great rock with very positive influence like Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Van Hagar, 38 Special, even Ozzy Osbourne had good influence songs, Dio, Metallica, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Night Ranger, Judas Priest, Nickelback etc....the list is just so damn long on great music with great influence.

This album came out shortly after my ex-wife announced her plan for me to leave after 7 years and 3 kids. To say I was hurt and angry would be a gross understatement. This song, in particular, helped me to channel my pain and rage without damaging anyone else. Played it back to back in my car for weeks; so therapeutic. I know it’s a rage against abuse, but pain is pain, anger is anger. And healing is healing.

@@SamoanObsidian I know he has said that, but at the same time his interviews about his parents are really really clear. It was not a happy childhood. Extremely conservative parents/grandparents with their foot on his throat. It would be an incredible stretch to believe this song with the amount of passion he has, is just a revolutionary song about government control. But it does protect his parents. He gets the same when he feels without looking like he hates his mother. He is incredible at capturing emotion, conveying pain, this song comes from a place of eternal pain. Every one of us who were abused knows that same pain. We live with it everyday. It's created the demon in us. We absorb the hate cuz that's what we had to do. We absorbed it and it created something in us that no one wants to see. Many of us live with that sickness every day of our lives. It ain't about government.

Hi, Jay and Amber. I’ve been a member of your channel for a few months now but have not left a single word until now. When I first discovered “reaction” videos I was fascinated by the idea. What makes them special? I feel it’s a bit like experiencing great songs and performances of my past for the first time - again - but enhancing the experience by sharing it with new young friends. I’m 68, so, yeah, you’re young. After bumping into my first reaction video, I binge watched for a couple days… and gradually became disappointed, in that the hosts began to feel like tired salespeople at Best Buy, faking it, pretending they are interested, pretending they know what they're talking about. They seemed like people stuck at a job. I began to suspect they knew the songs prior to their videos. Over time I stopped checking in on these channels, but not yours. You two offer something none of the others have quite been able to maintain: sincerity, authenticity (real folk), consistency, and warmth. It’s more than that though. You both exude genuine kindness and respect for each other, and for your audience, too. Also, you both seem to have an open mind in your approach to new music. You check your biases. Jay has a good sense for marketing, creating a brand, keeping things on track while not getting overly serious or too dry. I get the feeling he is giving it 100% and will succeed at whatever he puts his mind to. He’s focused. And Amber has an amazing talent for understanding the deeper meanings of both the music and the lyrics of a song. In watching her reactions, I get the feeling she is adjusting to the music, finding connections, tuning into the vibe and intent of the song. She is having an experience, which is contagious. I’ve watched you two react to songs I’ve heard a hundred times before, thought I knew the song, and Amber would make an observation that would put the song in a whole new light for me. She has a high music IQ - and very perceptive, I believe. You two, in my humble opinion, are the best reactors, best personalities, the best selection of songs, on KZbin. Thank you for keeping it real. Here’s a song I believe you’d both enjoy, especially Amber, for Female Friday: Sara Bareilles - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Live Cover) I watched you do the original Elton John version. You guys have it. Please keep it up.

Interesting fact: The first time I heard this song I was at a friend's house tripping on acid. He put in a cassette and was looking for a song. He was fast forwarding and playing trying to find the song he wanted. At one point he stopped fast forwarding and played it right when they said "OOH WA AH AH AH!" I flipped my lid lol. I said WTF WAS THAT?! Rewind it! Then we listened to the whole song and I absolutely loved it!

While people relate to the song as being about child abuse, it’s actually not. From David’s own words in an interview, it’s about society (the mother) beating down their child (the individual) and forcing them to conform. However, the great thing about music is that everyone can find whatever meaning they want in it and if this helps people who were victims of abuse, then that’s not a bad thing.

This song was on the Vampire movie “Queen of the Damned!” In the Disturbed song they only used the first chorus. Lestat de Lioncourt sings to flush out vampires! Using the song to tell about changes from human into a Vampire! Infuriated the Vampire community since they thrive on secrecy! This song is really about societies effects on children! Especially in abusive homes or families who over medicating children to calm them down! Many teens especially from single parents become over active, not understanding how to deal with their hormonal changes. Some parents abused their children while other use drug like Ritalin to keep from being hyperactive!! When these same children turn into their stages they become more hormonally aggressive, either from being over medicated or being abused. So most bring out their demons into public society were many of them become anti-social and anarchist!!!

This song is about David's mother abusing him. David was a problem child, in and out of boarding schools. His mother could not control him, so she reprimanded and disciplined him with severe and physical abuse. Not all, but if you check the past of musicians you'll be surprised how many of them had problems in the family or being bullied in school...ect...

This song describes my childhood completely from both my carrier ( birth mother) and my step mom perfectly. Completely spot on. I had a VERY difficult time trusting any woman in my life from teachers to my aunts and grandmother. I had anger issues and wanted to kill anyone who hurt me mentally or physically. One aunt in particular stood up to me and made me confront my fear and she's the one I grew closest to. My grandmother also came to be a mother figure to me as well and I have so much respect for them to stand up to me when my life could've turned out much worse than it was. I thank them endlessly to this day for saving my freedom but still have nightmares and flashbacks from childhood. I'm also VERY grateful that a band was able to catch my emotions and put it towards a song like this because it's how I felt

The song starts off as a child that has been beaten so low to the point he's kneeling sumissively before his abuser which happens to be his mother who also probably treats him like a servant. At his lowest point he starts to change from being fearful and heartbroken and an intense hatred starts to flare up inside of him, each time he's being abused, but it's only his thoughts and his feelings that have turned him angry and full of rage which is lashed so violently out in this song but he's basically saying because of her cruelty he's turned into this monster and now he's just as sick as her when he says, "Come get down with the sickness."

Just as an FYI, it isn't a real mother. Mother in this is society and the sickness is not being what society wants you to be... so it deems you as "sick". Get down with the sickness means to be accepting and cool with not being how society wants you to be. Enjoy
