A totally underrated album. This song as well as Hallelujah and others are such intense masterpieces that I become weak every time I listen to them. I've only seen Cave live once, in Roskilde arround 2001 (or 02?) close to the release of this album. That is still one of the most magnificient shows I have ever attended.

I just had to say that i'm addicted to this song... one of the reasons is the extreme feelings that Cave uses, like in all songs, but i think this one (live) he just sings with his full heart and soul. And very important, he can makes us feel the same... like it was said before, he is a truly genius!!!!

Excellent Excellent song! I had the chance to see him and the seeds live on Oslo back when this tour was on, the croud woudln't go home and we got THREE standing ovations in form of extra songs each time until Nick ordered us to go home WHAT A NIGHT!!

A song as the response to the wrong picture people had about someone. “Call it intuition, call it a creeping suspicion, but their words of derision meant they hardly knew me, for even I could see in the way they looked at me…" Cave’s music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. Absolutely amazing and overwhelming!

I think the most underated singer in the history of modern music. If mtv had played him more he would be one of the most sold out quadroplatinum artist playing in wembley arena like celine dion. I think nick is bigger than Sinatra. Nice guy also met him on leister square once in L.F.F

I've seen this song live twice, with two different band line ups, and both were amazing. I play this to annoying heavy metal teenagers to show them that you can generate a "heavy" sound with a piano and violin every bit as much as twin guitar attacks.

@psike5000 I agree! I agree, I agree!! You always hear people talking up Nick and the Bad Seeds older albums, The Boatman's Call, From Her to Eternity etc, but I think this album is one of the best. Not just the best from Cave and the Bad Seeds but the best ever. "Oh My Lord", Hallelujah", "We Came Along This Road", "The Sorrowful Wife" and the title track stand out in particular. I can never get enough of this album.

"Oh My Lord" I thought I'd take a walk today It's a mistake I sometimes make My children lay asleep in bed My wife lay wide-awake I kissed her softly on the brow I tried not to make a sound But with stony eyes she looked at me And gently squeezed my hand Call it a premonition, call it a crazy vision Call it intuition, something learned from mother But when she looked up at me, I could clearly see The Sword of Damocles hanging directly above her Oh Lord Oh my Lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms around me Oh Lord Oh Lord Oh My Lord They called at me through the fence They were not making any sense They claimed that I had lost the plot Kept saying that I was not The man I used to be They held their babes aloft Threw marsh mellows at the Security And said that I'd grown soft Call it intuition, call it a creeping suspicion, But their words of derision meant they hardly knew me For even I could see in the way they stared at me The Spear of Destiny sticking right through me Oh Lord Oh my lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms round me Oh Lord Oh lord Oh My Lord Now I'm at the hairdressers People watch me as they move past A guy wearing plastic antlers Presses his bum against the glass Now I'm down on my hands and knees And it's so fucking hot! Someone cries, "What are you looking for?" I scream, "The plot, the plot!" I grab my telephone, I call my wife at home She screams, "Leave us alone!" I say, "Hey, it's only me" The hairdresser with his scissors, he holds up the mirror I look back and shiver; I can't even believe what I can see Be mindful of the prayers you send Pray hard but pray with care For the tears that you are crying now Are just your answered prayers The ladders of life that we scale merrily Move mysteriously around So that when you think you're climbing up, man In fact you're climbing down Into the hollows of glamour, where with spikes and hammer With telescopic camera, they chose to turn the screw Oh I hate them, Ma! Oh I hate them, Pa! Oh I hate them all for what they went and done to you Oh Lord Oh my Lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms round me Oh Lord Oh Lord Oh My Lord

Lots of people misinterpret the religious imagery in Nick's material. This song is a clever play on words - he's saying "oh my lord" in exasperation, but on the surface it sounds like a straight religious song. This LP was Nick's last really amazing album with the Bad Seeds... at least so far.
