I'm not sure auto-gain makes sense on this type of plugin. It's intended to be more of an "instrument" or "creative tool" than an EQ right? For example if you want to automate a filter sweep, what does auto-gain mean in that scenario? Keep the volume the same throughout the sweep? Or just match the max volume? It might be too confusing, which is why I'm guessing they left it out.
@checktheneck3 жыл бұрын
Agree. It is absolutely not required here. But where it is really needed is in saturators with many separate control knobs for added harmonics. I can't stand Black Box HG-2 from PA, it's an incredibly confusing workflow in which each parameter adds a gain, and you need to balance 3-4 parameters and a volume knob and Mix knob.

It's super interesting to see you approach the plugin like - well like a mixing engineer, using an eq. Every sound designer, every synth guy would immediately look for some kind of movement: a lowpass sweep with some resonance, listening for stepping, listening for sweet spots, discovering that you can link several bands to modulate them simultaneously, aaalso just clicking through the presets (which in my opinion make much more sense conceptually with a plugin like this one than with a plugin that is aimed at mixing) to get an idea what crazy stuff you can squeeze out of this thing.

There is a very obvious gain compensation running all the time, you can't turn it off. That's why there is no button. They don't want a "no auto gain" mode, and for a good reason. Playing with distorting filters like that could easily get you to very high levels, and they don't want to damage your gear/ears.

the problem with an auto-gain in a plugin like this is that of you add a moving filter peak somewhere for style, do you really want all the of the rest of the sound to be turned down?... dynamically? no i wouldn't want that. instead, my go-to here would be to add a limiter to that layer or sound.

The Delay feature is very useful for creating stereo effects. You can really widen say, cymbals, by having Left/Right filters at slightly different frequencies and with very slight delay in one of the channels. Modulate the drive with envelopes for dynamic drive, too. It can be pretty useful for mixing tasks, even though it's primarily a creative tool. If you want to go ham, you can also chain filters with drive on them in serial.

I'm using Volcano 2 a lot. Especially on my lead and screech groups. To be fair, Volcano 2 has become my go-to filter. Using it with sidechain to create nice sounding plucks (Hardstyle) or just as a regular neutral sounding filter (clean algorythm). Pro Q doesn't have a modulation section (correct me if i'm wrong), Volcano does. Just a bit more quality of life also when comparing Volcano with Ableton's stock autofilter. I always wanted to have more nodes to play with to make some creative stuff. Honestly I'm very exited about the update and I can't wait to play around with the newly added features. I think I'll be making plenty of new racks in Ableton with this update.

If you look at the display when you did the comparison between Volcano and Pro-Q, the peaks of the filter aren't in the same spot in both plugins even though the frequency is the same, I did some testing in the plugin and if you move a low shelf vertically, the filter moves horizontally so that the peak stays centered with the filter frequency, something that Pro-Q doesn't do. Kind of odd behavior but it makes sense since the plugin is all about making sweeping filters

My favorite use for filters in the mixing context is actually parallel processing. Think about a synth sound with parallel pitch shifters at -12 and -24 semitones, you can use bandpass filters to pluck out the most interesting frequencies without drowning in mud. Or just using a 6db lowpass with an envelope follower to “oomph” something. Or, maybe my favorite, a notch filter on reverb that randomly sweeps around to accent different phasing effects and add movement.
