I totally understand your frustration! Especially when the glass glitter was purchased from a company that sold them to be used with resin. Hopefully you give them feedback on the problem with their products.

Thank you! Yes! This is actually the underlying disappointment...they are a resin supplies company. I have been in touch with them and they said they are aware of the bleeding issue. The manufacturing company that they purchased these glitters from didn't intend for the glitters to be used in resin or other varnishes. As i mentioned in my video, there are definitely ways to work with these glitters and get nice results...but being aware of their limitations is key. Just Resin says that they will be adding more information to their website, including tutorials on suggested ways to use this glitter.

I am SO glad you posted this "fail" simply because you took something that you didn't really like and turned some of it into something you really liked. I just started a set of coasters that I am NOT loving. I've been so sad thinking I need to get rid of them, but you just showed me that I can actually take them and turn them into something new. Thank you for being willing to test things with us and show us it's possible to make something you don't love and turn it into something we do love :)

I got some beautiful ones from my lovely friend Deborah from Resin Pigment Canada and yep, I was shocked that they bled. BUT, I adore them in my gloss varnish. I have to thank you so much for ideas with the glitter and varnish I do acrylic pours, and sometimes they dry matte and boring. I've been having so much fun with the varnish and glitter to geode them, sometimes just resin can get boring for me, and your technique makes them gorgeous THANK YOU

Hi Nadia! They are still both beautiful coasters but thanks so much for bringing this issue up for us all to be aware of. Can you tell us in what instances you use the varnish to apply different products to resin as opposed to just mixing them up in a little resin? When would we select one technique over the other? Thank you Lin 🥰 This is definitely one of the concerns...these types of specialty glitters are not inexpensive. There should be a reasonable expectation that if a resin supply company is selling a product, that it will interact well with resin. Unfortunately, these glitters were never intended for resin, even though some have been able to find ways to use them...having unpredictable outcomes is not ideal. Just Resin says they will be updating the descriptions of these items on their website and adding tutorials with recommended uses.

Although the colors didn't turn out like you wanted. They are still all beautiful. I have had problems with the Dura gloss varnish you use. When used over paint pours will crack. It is great to varnish wood that has been painted with acrylics and also on canvas with regular acrylics. I have not tried it with glitter and resin, as you have. You get favorable results using it in that way. If you have any suggestions for me, I would love to hear from you on this. I like the dura gloss varnish. This may or may not have affected your end result. Thank you!
@LiaDiaDesigns
@LiaDiaDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Varnishes (especially water based varnishes like DuraClear) are not meant to be poured or painted in thick layers, they will definitely crack as they dry. They are meant to paint on thinly and add layers as they dry if you need more than 1 coat. When I use them on resin, I generally paint a thin layer to use it like a glue or mix it with a pigment for my stained glass look, which is still painted on in a thin layer. Hope this helps🥰

I do also like seeing the difference between the glass glitters and the glitters.
@LiaDiaDesigns
@LiaDiaDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
💖thank you Christine🥰 I've been hearing that they are likely colored with inks as well... and that sealing them may help ... so I wonder why the manufacturer wouldn't just do that as part of their process🤔. These types of glitters are not inexpensive, so I would expect to be able to use them straight out of the package...or at minimum some sort of warning on the packaging. I'm glad I made the 2nd coaster with the other glitters I had... you can really tell the difference when comparing them😊

Very pretty, good to know & great tips! So sorry for the frustration you went through though, God bless you! 💞🙏😘 Thank you for sharing & yes - it's always helpful to share tips! I had a VERY helpful tip just shared (being fairly new to resin) that I believe was from "pouring your heart out" explained on a video: It was if your pigment pastes become hard & no longer creamy (I had one of 2 that I purchased early on that arrived hard from Just Resin). I had no idea, but she shared on the video to place it in very hot water (she let hers come to a boil - I placed my jar in a zip lock bag first) then set it in the hot water over night. It worked like a charm!!! Was creamy, easily stirred & like brand new. It was explained that can occur because of temperature changes. (And the JR came all the way from Australia to the U.S. - gorgeous, beautiful, creamy colors). Thanks again Nadia!
@LiaDiaDesigns
@LiaDiaDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Pam. 💖 Yes, pigment pastes can harden with temperature changes and even just over time. Putting the container in warm water is the recommended way to soften it...but I haven't done it that way lol. I have a space heater in my studio ... so i put the containers in front of the space heater ( about a foot away) and let it sit there for about 5-10 minutes... works like a charm!

The seller has now updated the descriptions for these products on their website to properly explain their intended use. Thanks for showing us the flaws in this product. Just Resin is a ‘go to’ for a lot of resin artists and it’s an obvious assumption that their products are resin compatible. Planning color combinations is as important as your design. Depending on how complicated your design is.. how large it is.. how many pours it takes, all of these factors can result in a lot of work.. time and money.

@LiaDiaDesigns
@LiaDiaDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
The varnish I use is water based..it generally doesn't react with anything I add to it. The tests I did in resin also shows color loss and change... so whatever the glass glitters are coated in is very fragile to any type of agitation /stirring. The manufacturer says they were never intended to be used in resin or varnish, even though they are being sold as a resin additive. Other artists have commented with similar experiences and some have found that the glitters need to be spray sealed before they can be used.

These will lose their faceting/sparkle when put in a medium....they are best sprinkled on top of a clear adhesive to keep their sparkle. I would only use them on things that you are not going to be running your hands over or coming in direct contact, as it is glass and is sharp!
@LiaDiaDesigns
@LiaDiaDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Can I ask what clear adhesive you use? I've tried varnish, resin, mod podge and triple thick... all with the same discoloring issue of the fuchsia glass glitter (turns hot pink). The seller (just resin) has now admitted that the manufacturer of the glass glitter never intended for use with resin or any type of varnish. They mentioned they were recommended for gift cards, scrapbooking and ornaments... all of which seem like a hazard for getting your fingers cut on the sharp edges of the glass glitter. The obvious solution seemed to be covering it with varnish or resin to make it safer... but the colors definitely don't like it (gold and silver seem fine). I've heard some artists have said they spray seal their glitter... but I'm eager to learn more from those who say they use them with success (specifically the highly pigmented ones)

@@LiaDiaDesigns I had tried with dyes to make my own, but the color bleeds on that too. So if I want color, I just use clear glitter glass and sprinkle it over a colored resin once it has sat for a bit and thickened up (otherwise it will sink into it) I would assume you could put down a layer of your water based varnish that had been colored with micas or acrylics in a similar color to the colored glass glitter and then sprinkle over it once tacky but not dry and it might not lose its facets, color or change color. It will, however always be sharp. I mainly use it on wall art pieces. Hope this helps some.

The product did perform properly. The glass is dyed and you added varnish which takes color off since, it contains naphtha. Know your chemicals before you blame a company for a failed product.

As far as I know, water-based varnish like the one I use doesn't contain naphtha like some oil based varnishes (which I don't use). I haven't had this issue with other dyed products with this water-based varnish. Thank you for your kind comment. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Contact the manufacturer and show them this video. When we buy products, especially for the color, and it changes the color and messes up your projects, it is upsetting. They need to know this to maybe make adjustments.
