RIP Bill Maynard. I remember this being on a Saturday teatime / early evening when I used to go visit my grandparents as a very young kid. Always used to make me laugh, even the name was funny. I don't imagine I understood any of it back then at such a young age, so I suppose it must have been down to his larger than life presence. I remember The Gaffer too which I enjoyed.

Bill Maynard used to come into the town where i live in Earl Shilton in the 1980's to do a bit of shopping, my mother heard him once in a queue at the fruit and veg shop saying "My god everybody is miserable in this town,can't nobody smile?"

Magic our Maurice! After all these years I shall never forget Bill Maynard (as Selwyn) 'flipping' and catching the stack of beer mats (a pastime all the rage in the mid 70s) in front of the cameras (I suspect he was supposed to drop the lot) , the look of delight and surprise on the actor's face, then he just carried on acting. A true pro.

@georgepadgett2 жыл бұрын
Lived in the same village as Bill Maynard growing up. Served him in the local shop. I heard it said he based the character from this on a guy called Pete who lived on my street. Pete was a very good skittles player. Have no idea if he was the basis for the character though. 28 06 82
@georgepadgett2 жыл бұрын
Just read the Wikipedia entry. Yeah, it was Pete Wright. I used to drink regularly at the Sapcote Working Men's Club around 1998 - 2004. I remember when Pete died around 2005. Funny world. 🙂
@georgepadgett2 жыл бұрын
Used to chat with Pete. I'd sometimes walk with him on my way home if was walking back from the shop. That was when I was doing my GCSEs. Used to serve him in the shop. Talk to him. He'd come in the club for skittles night and sometimes then. No idea what he would have been like when he was younger. I'm not taking too much from the video clip.

Alan Coren really hated this show. In an article for American "TV Guide" titled "The Horrible Truth about British Television", he focused on the top 10 shows in England and ran them all down, including this one, CORONATION STREET, and THIS IS YOUR LIFE. Coren couldn't have predicted that another Roy Clarke-penned show, KEEPING UP APPEARENCES, would become a hit for US public service TV.
