I’ve improved so much by watching you! These higher rated games used to be way beyond my grasp a year and a half ago but now I (mostly) understand your line of thinking and every now and then even predict the best moves before you tell us! I think the zen environment you create on this channel, with zero hubris/arrogance and just a colossal depth of practical knowledge, is really conducive to a great learning experience.

@hinderliter849 күн бұрын
@@arnoudh6203 It's the picture at the beginning of the video of young Eric at a tournament. The man on the left side glancing over toward Eric's board seems to be Emory Tate, a well-regarded IM (and Andrew Tate's father) who died from a heart attack at a chess tournament in 2015.

Isn't the whole point of playing without increment that the clock is a weapon and flagging is legit?
@ryanlind5239Ай бұрын
It's honestly so satisfying to pause the video and try to decide what i would play in a given position, then unpause and see you play the same thing or even just mention it as a candidate. Why does the game seem so much easier when "playing" this way? 😂
@AUniqueHandleName444Ай бұрын
I know your question was somwhat rhetorical, but from what I can tell it comes down to 2 things: 1. Consistency. We may pick the same moves as a tiitled player sometimes, but we also miss a lot of obvious shit. 2. We only notice the ones where we make a similar move. All of those moves setting up that one move we see are what's hard to replicate.
@MyBiPolarBearMaxАй бұрын
Since this is an educational series, heres an easy way to know how to defend King v King + Pawn endgames. A and H pawns, just go to the corners. B-G: Picture a “T” on the squares in front of the pawn. There is an order of the “best” squares to be on, always go to the highest you can. 1: directly in front of the pawn (pawn is on c5, king on c6) 2: directly in front of the pawn, one square back (pawn c5, King c7) 3: to the left or right to oppose the king if it moves forward (b7 or d7, whichever way the opponents king goes). ALWAYS go to #1 if you can, if not go to #2. Only go to #3 when you cant move to the other choices. It doesnt matter how far down the board the pawn is, you can do this when it’s in its starting position - they’ll eventually move you back but you’ll be certain to stalemate.

That second game was awesome. You played amazingly especially after losing the knight and I'm glad your opponent was a good sport and didn't try to dirty flag.

@choco1101Ай бұрын
58:06 Opponent trying to flag to win makes sense. But when Eric took the last pawn, flagging Eric is only a draw. Might as well take time playing with proper technique to hold the draw on the board. I'm of course assuming a 2200 can hold that with 1:30 on the clock.

Seeing how you spend time is so useful for me. I used to rush through my openings to save as much time as possible, but seeing how you slow things down and catch mistakes early on made a big difference. Just jumped up from 1250 to 1400 and the only thing I've changed is that I spend more time thinking while I play my openings.

Game 2: pretty sure the opponent knows the endgame but was trying to have a laugh by allowing promotion but flagging for the draw anyway.

Hi Eric, I have a question: in the endgame of the last game when you had the king on C4 and the Pony on D5 why you didn't take the pawn on B4? was it a wrong move? I'm a 1000elo player and it could be a main move to change the horse for a pawn and a bishop in that position but maybe is not really good. Thank you so much for all this instructive videos!🙂
@NoNamer123456789Ай бұрын
It's actually a draw because then the king can take the other pawn and block the pawn from advancing/sacrifice the bishop for a pawn and draw.
@jaketaylor4123Ай бұрын
Taking the pawn on b4 would have been a draw. The black king will win the white pawn on f5 (the knight can't get back in time to defend that pawn), and then the black bishop will give itself up for white's b pawn (if white ever tries to push it) leading to a draw (can't checkmate with just knight and king).

Is the London bishop more of a weakness than strength? With so many pawns on dark squares (and personal games), I see that bishop as being a positional limitation / higher chance of getting trapped vs. being super useful, in comparison to other openings.

Can you explain a bit the king pawn ending why is it a draw until you get your king in front of the pawn and do opposition?
@crugy7Ай бұрын
You cannot make progress. The opponent just blocks your pawn and you cannot get your king in front to advance it without losing the pawn in the process. Play around a bit with the position to get a feel how it plays out.
