OH NO ! Volvo C70 electric roof Broken.

My biggest fear on the Volvo C70 came true. The electric hood stopped working ! This could mean £1000's in a repair bill prob costing more than the car is worth. Lucky for me it turned out to be an easy fix that i could do myself. Phew. All Shown in the video. STAY SAFE people and take care.

When I was a teenager in the 1960's I couldn't wait to get a driving licence.. Someone said to me ; "Cars will keep you poor and take a lot of your spare time". Nice when its a cheap fix, these cars are so bloody complicated these days. Bring back the cortina, escort, capri etc easy fixes, panels with simple screws holding them down instead of plastic clips that snap. Anyway glad you saved a fair bit money. A little word if it does ever go out of synch sometimes disconnecting the battery and leaving it dor 10/20 minutes then reconnect sometime solves alot of reset problems on modern cars.

Yes the old Fords, BMC, Vaux etc were dead simple. All you needed was fuel and a spark to get the engine going and fine tune from there. Nowadays if a car will not start your first stop is a scan tool.

Watching your video for the first time as my C70 roof doesn't work. When I get it back from the garage I'll check the possible handbrake fault as the handbrake is non existent at the minute. I'll keep an eye on your videos, cheers

Hello fred, Any chance of making a video on how to manually open the soft top roof of a Volvo 2001. Including manual unlock at the console over front windscreen. Do you turn the various allan sockets' 'clockwise' or 'anti-clockwise', and approximately how many turns. When for instance do you know its unlocked from front windscreen and you can go start on the two levers in the boot. Thanks in advance

I cannot rem the brand of coolant i used but it has to be the green type. Yes i changed my tranny oil at 50k miles and it was really dirty (video on here) I used the Robert DIY (youtube) method and have had no issues. The flashing light means there is a fault. The roof is very complex so its a BIG worry. I was lucky here.

Hi. Mines all ok. there are a number of switches and relays that have to work. Do some research and try and eliminate each one with a multimeter etc. It can be bloody expensive labour wise to put the car into a garage to fix.

While the rest of the car can be diagnosed with VIDA/DiCE, the roof mechanism itself requires the old pre DiCE tool for diagnosis (the OBDI tool which resembles a large GameBoy). This tool barely exists in the US at this point from what I am told and is only useful for a handful of Volvo years in the 90s and the roof of the C70 MKI (I have one, which is how I learned all of this).

Now I'm from the states so the awd of the legacy will be useful in the winter, but I love the c70. Just worried that it'll be bad in snow and electrical problems. Hi. A well sorted C70 should not give you any trouble other than reg servicing. Only thing you have to watch is people skimp on that because the parts are not cheap. Being front wheel drive will help with traction in the winter but a auto box wont so i dont think they will be great in any snow etc.

Naturally, Volvo doesn't want owners trying to open or close the roof while the car is in motion, but you'd think that having the gear shifter in park would be good enough for that, given that they don't demand that the parking brake is on before you can start the engine. BTW: That is not a microswitch, it's an ordinary door light type of switch.

Yes this C70 was a very early design and it needs the car at a dead stop. Also the car needs to be level as the roof wont open on a slope either. Modern drop tops allow you to open or close the roof at slow speeds.

I believe its because this model was also offered in a manual transmission and there was an expectation to use it to become "stopped" for manuals even though for an automatic this was unnecessary.

I believe the car also allows the top to operate with the ignition in the on position but without the engine running , irregardless of the parking brake. Obviously it’s a pretty huge draw on the car’s relatively small battery, and only a few movements of the top can result in the car being unable to start.

I use a very small amount if silicone spray. I just stop it about half way with the back window up and lightly spray the roof hinges and the big gear cogs at the back. I then complete the cycle and pray it all syncs up.

I'm looking at buying one of these in the States and Volvo diagnosed the motors that power the top as needing replacement (Very costly!!) Do you happen to know if there is a manual override for the top?

Yes there is an emergency crank socket in the boot area. Volvo supplied a hand crank tool or you can use a battery drill. TBH if you have a roof fault unless the car is being offered very cheap i would walk away as the mech is quite complex and expensive.

I had the immobilizer antenna around the ing key fail. That stopped it starting. Just waiting for the rubber top front spring mounts to go next. GREAT cars though :-)

Our roof on our C70 doesn't work at all, handbrake light fine, no light on the button for the roof any more and windows are now stuck in a 'windows down' sequence every time we start the car! Fuses seem to be fine. What do you think the issue would be and where should we start looking? Thank you! Sorry to hear about your roof. Its mech is complicated with lots of servos, switches and motors. In truth is not something you can play around with that much at home. There is fault code reading software just for the roof itself and normally only Volvo have this. They should be able to find the fault very quickly with a fault scan. In the UK thats about £100 cost. One thing you might try is to wind the roof down using the emergency key crank key in the boot (or an electric drill with hex bit). Once half way you can access all the hinges and gears and give them a good clean. I use white spray grease to lube mine. I would fully drop it and then crank it back up. It might just be out of sequence. I am thinking to get to the rear window your going to have to take out the rear seat side panel. You would have to google for that.

Do tpu happen to have any schematics on the electronics of the roof? Mine opens, but the cover doesnt pull doen but more impirtantly it gets stuck at the same point every time closing. I dont rhink rhe front motir is being told start closing. Hope tpu have some insight

No sorry. Best bet would be to try a couple of Volvo forums. So many micro switches and servos in the operation. A Volvo dealer can run a code scan and prob tell you straight away whats failed but they gonna charge for that.

Hi. Ive no real leaks to speak of other than a very odd drip which sometimes runs down the middle of the drivers side window but needs heavy rain. Yes it does whistle above 60 MPH and creaks a bit around town.

Thinking about buying a 2009 C70 Convertible on Craigslist. 70000 Miles for $1500 with no apparent problems. Seem too good to be true? I've always wanted a Convertible, and for $1500 it feels like such a good deal. Like I could possibly sell it for more one day.

The prices are at a real low right now. As long as the services are kept up along with repairs they are good cars. Being a 2009 the C70 your looking at will have the more involved metal folding roof. Just need to make sure that its fully working.

For starters, in which direction do you turn (allan key) to unlock it from the windscreen console inside the car from drivers seat. When do you know its unlocked, and can go to the two keys in the boot. what direction do you turn the allan key hole. What crank have you got for the other. What is that socket even called (to identify a socket), or do you use a large screwdriver or just a flat piece of steel. In the 2001 C70 you have to clean a drainage hose otherwise water collects in the roof storage compartment. No one has made a video of the manual opening of these soft top roofs. If it should be necessary to manually raise the convertible top: l Open the trunk. The trunk must be open during the entire procedure. Open the cover over the convertible top storage space l Insert tool A in the right-hand hole (2) and turn it counterclockwise one complete turn. l Insert tool B in the left-hand hole (1) and turn it counterclockwise until the cover over the convertible top storage space is completely open. This procedure could take several minutes.
