Tbh this palette seems like a beautiful girl who has a very complicated personality. She's difficult to be friends with. But, she's worth all the work.

@rosiellagrace7 жыл бұрын
Tori Vela right?! I've used more descriptive [maybe considered crude / rude] words but, it's fitting. Sisters are never the same, so the formula thing didn't bother me but it was an expectation thing that had everyone thrown for a loop!
@Moonbunbunn7 жыл бұрын
Rose Ella-Grace yeah that's totally true and it's even more accurate cause the subculture palette is modern's "sister" palette or at least that's what they call it
@rosiellagrace7 жыл бұрын
Tori Vela exactly, I mean.. I still absolutely see it as a sister palette. The MR is just the older, popular sister and Subculture is the younger, grungy one - it's all about which colour scheme appeals to you.

I'm the exact person this palette was designed for. I am a professional artist so I'm very used to working with paint and color, I love a challenge, and honestly I'm drooling over the unique colors after having it for weeks. I've had my palette for about 2 weeks now. Yes I have kick up but really no more than my MR palette....My MR palette is very soft and dusty as well. I absolutely love my Subculture. I've had no trouble blending and I'm far from being a pro. I go in with a light hand but do that with all my shadows. I like to build up my looks. This palette really makes me step out of my comfort zone and I've been really enjoying creating different looks. Stephanie Nicole and KJ Bennett explained this palette, in depth and the differences between ingredients of the 2. 😘

I love how you approach your reviews: informative, to-the-point, and fair while also expressing your own opinion. I can't afford this palette, but that hasn't stopped me from watching the reviews. What struck me most about Subculture was how finicky it is to work with. If you have the skill and patience, great! I've only been getting back into makeup recently, so this is not for me. What I have learned from watching the Subculture reviews is different possibilities with color combinations that I wouldn't have considered before - my eyeshadow color horizon has been broadened! The eye look that you created Jen, is a very pretty one done with unusual (to me) colors. Awesome!

I ordered this palette, started watching some YTubers that were bashing this palette, freaked out and thought I had made a mistake purchasing it then Stephanie and Wayne Goss talked about it and decided to keep it. I haven't used it but I think just using a light hand will help me and I feel dorky for listening to some YTubers instead of trying it for myself. Your review is really nice. Every palette has its pros & cons and I liked how you pointed both out and not just negative. The look you did is stunning and now I know not every palette is for everyone. Wonderful demo! Congrats on slaying this palette👏🏽. Totally agree! We consumers scream for "more pigment" and ABH gave it to us, but failed to tell/warn us. They could have played up the "We hear you, pigment you want, pigment you'll get" message instead of riding on the popularity of MR. Now that we know this is NOT the sister to MR, we can adapt our methods & tools. I love it b/c I have an overly light hand and WG brushes pick up more shadow with less damage/dust up in the pan.

I bought my subculture palette the day it launched on the ABH website. I love the palette. Yes, it has a lot of powder. Yes, it takes time to figure out. Yes, It is somewhat hard to work with. BUT, I think that once you have it figured out, it is an amazing palette. I played with it a lot the first week and find myself grabbing for it less. I also think though, that come fall, we will be loving it all over again.... I LOVE this eye look BTW. I may try to recreate it! Thank yo, Jen. You are amazing!! I think another thing that ABH didn't mention is that Electric and Cube are more transformative shades rather than full on metallics. This is one of the best reviews I've seen on this palette. Some of the other ones just annoyed me. If you see a shadow is soft and pigmented, don't treat it like it's not just to see what happens.
@nikoleledbetter90187 жыл бұрын
Andrea Lafuente If I'm not mistaken, they did mention it several times on their Instagram. They said they were duochromes and Adorn was the only metallic in the palette.

Duochromes can be highly pigmented also. Transformers are sheerer or lightly pigmented.

Or use a wet brush as with basically any metallic and electric looks just as pretty on the eye as it does in the pan.
@nikoleledbetter90187 жыл бұрын
Anna Downey agreed, electric is my favorite of the palette, I dip in with a wet brush first then top it off with a little bit more on my finger, it's a gorgeous shade. Cube is ehh for me, dry, wet, brush, or finger I'm just not impressed with it. :/ overall I do enjoy the palette.

@pandemonium82766 жыл бұрын
I know I'm a FREAKIN YEAR later, but whatever hahahhah. I have some tips for you if you still use it: being sweet and short, use more dense brushes. What I noticed that works marvels is to use more dense brushes and theeeen blend away. As you said, it's better when you dip into another palette to create a base (because this palette doesn't work amazing with dry nor wet patches of primer), and then apply these pigments. You pick up with a dense brush, pack a little bit and then blend with patience. Also it worked wonders for me picking up a mix of the two colors I'm blending. And since the metallic shadows are prone to close up (meaning that they form this supericial layer of oils), that part of the brush you hate, totally works to scrap a little bit that layer without hurting the shadow. I get that is NOT the best formula ever, but I do think the payoff is good. The color story is fun and it haven't been seen until that time. I totally agree: she should've warned people. But it's kind of the culture, you know? Creators are SO affraid of the backlash of anything they say that I feel like they are not saying things before hand so they can give it a try before judging. Happens the same thing in the videogame industry, btw hahaha

Jen, Thank you so much for your in depth reviews. All of the work you put into your videos is very much appreciated! I absolutely love my Subculture palette! Yes, I have to build it and spend more time on my looks, but to me it is definitely worth it. I have recently begun stepping out of my neutral comfort zone, and this palette has been so fun to play with and helped me do just that. Yesterday I created a look with Dawn, Roxy, Fudge and Axis on the outer V....boom, color! I loved it! Bye, Bye comfort zone! I can see myself getting addicted to Axis! My fiancee walked in the door and instantly commented that he loved my eye look. Subculture success! LOL I can honestly say that is has become one of my favorite palettes to play with, and I look forward to tying it in with other palettes to see what kind of looks I come up with. For those that are debating purchasing this palette, I feel that if you are drawn to the colors and don't mind experimenting and learning how to work with this formula, I urge you to go ahead and try it. I know that I am extremely excited to rock some Fall looks with this little beauty! Hope everyone has a fabulous day!

Excellent review, per usual, Jen. I had such high hopes for this palette because the colors are just stunning! I didn't have trouble discerning which colors should and shouldn't be used together, and I went in with a VERY light hand (one LIGHT dip into the pan) to slowly build the color. My problem was the tiiiiime it took to blend. AUGH. It just took FOREVER. I even gave myself an extra 15 minutes for getting ready the second time using it, and was STILL late leaving the house. I guess this taught me how important blend-ability is to me in eyeshadows, so there's that, lol.

I bought this palette the day it launched and my issue was the way ABH responded after people started putting out their reviews. I know it's "just makeup" but for some reason it really set me off. It was one excuse after another...It's a pro palette not for the general public, they're pressed pigments, you're not using the right brushes, you're not using the shadows correctly, it's innovative and you people don't know what you're doing and they never just came out and said "you know what, we marketed this way wrong and we're sorry about that!" They waited until people were like "holy shit this is odd!" and then put out conflicting and condescending responses as to why that was. Also, it really upset me when some people were saying someone was dumb if they didn't like this palette and didn't know what they were doing. Just not cool all around.

Oh my goodness, I have absolutely no desire to have to work that hard to get an eyeshadow look. From the first video I saw on this palette I knew I would not be purchasing it. This is a great review! Funny enough, I swatched it at Macys, Sephora, Ulta - and noticed that the palettes were a mess - and swatched it at the Sephora in JCP and it was sooooo much better so I picked mine up there. Tbh, my MR palette has more kick-up then the Subculture palette and I feel like a lot of KZbin reviews really weren't helpful. I am personally glad that I picked it up and tried it for myself and that I bought it because I wanted the colors. It all comes down to personal preference and what you want/are looking for in your makeup.
@lune785 жыл бұрын
I know this drama is super old, but I totally agree with Jen, the palette was not the problem, the marketing was. Calling it a sister to MR was a huge mistake on ABH's part, and also not telling people it was a pressed pigment palette. People who knew how to use it and were willing to put in the effort to make it work absolutely loved it. At the end of the day, it's a matter of preference. Personally, I haven't purchased this palette, nor do I intend to, I'll stick to my MR palette as it is much easier to work with.

I got this a couple of days ago and I LOVE it! I use the dome shape technique, using the darker colors on my lid and then used Roxy to diffuse the harshness. The looks both days only took me 5-10 minute tops! The looks I have done have been beautiful and am very happy when I look in the mirror to check my make up. Hi Jen! Great review as usual! :-) I was terrified of this palette until I watched videos from Stephanie Nicole and Emily Noel. I looked at the brushes I typically prefer using and then actually paid attention to how I apply my eyeshadow and noticed that I apply them by using packing motions with a small flat concealer brush! which is exactly how people who love the palette apply their shadow. I took the plunge and used my ulta 20% and I've been loving it. Cube and Electric seem to just be transformative or topper shadows really similar to that weird glitter shadow in the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate bar palette Pink Sugar I think it's called. I've used several different crease brushes and I can say that you do NOT want to use a dense fluffy brush but rather a flimsy one like Wetnwild crease brush. Crazy but it really allows the heavy pigment to be dispersed over a larger area, conversely I use the crown brush flat C421 mini concealer brush to pack and layer shadow on and holy cow it works WAAAAAAYY better than any other brushes I own. Fluffy (not too stiff) pencil brushes also did well for me and I'll tell you that these are the absolute best shadows to use an eyeliner with a super skinny flat or angled liner brush because of how much "stick" the pigments have. Lastly the muddiness of shadows. You touched on something when you said the person who likes this should be a creative type because you have to have an eye for color theory to get the most out of this palette. The usual methods of blending (sweeping, stippling, and swirling) will absolutely create that muddy (oil paint-like) mixture if you don't simply pack on the shadows. Is this ridiculous for an eyeshadow palette? YES! This isn't for the masses. With that said, I'm actually loving practicing with it and will get a ton of use out of it this fall. :-) Sorry for the disertation ha!

I waited till it was in Sephora and got to touch, feel, swatch the palette. Yes it has kickback but its not as crazy as some of these videos are making it out to be. I read somewhere that the problem wasn't pressing but to much silicone in the powder. I already do my eye-shadow like it is being suggested to do so for me I haven't had alot of problems with it. I love this pallette and it does pair really well with Modern Renaissance.

LOVE your fun, fair reviews! ABH may indeed have pre-promo'd the palette differently *IF* they themselves knew they'd later need to explain challenges. I know a couple of fellow MUA's were trying to be supportive of the brand, but it was a little disappointing to hear them loosely use "pure" pigment with conviction when all it took was a glance at the ingredients to know they aren't solely pure pigment (though they may be high in pigment). Yes, "pure pigment"/"high pigment" sounds fabulous, but not if the result is sheer, skips, lacks adhesion or muddies. A "user friendly" formula is a good mix of quality colorants AND binders (for ex. PURE vanilla extract is divine, but w/out the other ingredients there's no delish dessert!). Love ABH, though the earlier shadow formula wasn't their strength (I haven't tried the newer palettes, but singles are good though). I do admire what Anastasia/Claudia have built from scratch. They always have innovative ideas and are brilliant with the relatively new digital era.

This is one of the best "Honest" vidieos on the Subculture. I bought this the first day it came availiable from Macys and Ive had some playtime with it and you hit the nail on the head with this review. Im the girl that doesnt know much about makeup ...but I know this has potential if you are patient. I love just looking at this palette...it shouts out to me and gives me inspiration to be creative....Today I paired it with a Natasha Denonna #9 palette I got from a Beautylish Luckybag 2 years ago and they played very well together. I will for sure be doing this eye look here because you Miss Jenn made a beautiful eye look right there and I think I can do it now esp. since you did this tutorial!!~ xoxo

I love how thorough your reviews are... You do all the work for us. I love those earrings too btw. Also I like this pallet it works for me. You just have to use it correctly. It's basically loose pressed pigments. ✌

I think you are absolutely right about who this palette is good for. I personally really love this palette. It's so fun to play with. It is actually my favourite palette when I'm feeling creative. BUT... I definitely don't use it if I'm in a rush because it can be a bit unpredictable. Also, I have had the best results when not using an eye primer at all. I just dust one of the base shades from the KVD Shade & Light eyeshadow palette from lash to brow, then go in with Subculture and I haven't had any blending issues.

This is such a great review! I love how professional you are. I personally love my palette, but I agree that mixing some of these colors will not work because they are complimentary colors from the color wheel & can become muddy pretty fast. The pigments are super intense & if not careful they will turn gray. I do wish the marketing was better, if that happened I don't think it would be judged so harshly. It's definitely a more grungy palette which is my style. I do have some color wheel knowledge, but I'm not a MUA, so it took practice & an extremely light hand. Blending takes some time for a few colors, mainly the darker colors which can really overtake the look if not careful. But, I dig the colors & have used it many times & it gets better once you find the right combos & techniques. I think it's for a person who doesn't mind spending a little more time working with these pigments. I got my palette with the first launch & it's from a P7 batch, but I think this is what ABH intended, however a little direction would of been helpful. I was so scared to touch my palette when it came in because of all the crazy, super dramatized reviews. I thought if I touched it, then it'd fall apart. I've never gotten nervous from makeup before. But, I just went in & built colors slowly & was able to make it work. I feel most of the colors have a brownish base to them, for example the orange, yellow, & red tones can kinda look tinged brown. Not sure if I'm explaining that correctly, but I feel once blended you can see a color difference on the eye & not in the pan..they look like brown was added to these colors in different amounts. Hope that made sense. Like, the orange/yellow color turns out to look like an acorn color on the eye. Sorry, I'm not looking at my palette, & can't remember the shade names. Lol. I love your reviews & thanks for all your hard work! Have a beautiful day & much love✌✌✌

As an artist I found myself really appreciating this palette. It was fun to mix and blend the colors on my eyes as if in a painting. The deep colors, when sheered out, stay colorful, unlike other palettes that become grey when the deep colors are blended. That being said, I would never hit this palette if I was in a hurry. These are pigments that deserve the time it takes to blend them out.

Jen, I love this palette and once I started using it, I find I reach for it more. I think the negative reviews were causing me to stay away from it. At first I wasn't going to get this palette. I can see this becoming one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes. I will say I love playing with makeup.

I've been waiting on your review of this palette before I make a decision. I love the colors and I'm willing to work with the palette, but I think I'm going to wait. If it was limited edition, I would definitely buy it. Since it is permanent, I think I'm going to see if they reformulate it before I buy it. Thanks Jen!❤️

I have been waiting for your review, and it was everything I'd hoped for! I've pretty much decided not to buy this palette. While I do fit in your last category (people who love playing with makeup) I don't love dark looks and the colors muddying would really frustrate me. Since it's so close to all of the holiday releases, I think I'm just going to save my money for those. Thank you for an amazing review--by far my favorite, and I've watched many!

I think you are right with the heads up on the difference. If they had marketed it that way then there wouldn't have been surprise. I for one had watched a bunch of videos about it before hand so I knew that it was different and it didn't bother me, I just knew how to treat it. I love the palette, its so unique compared to all the other palettes coming out and I for one just love to play around with makeup anyway. This is the perfect palette for those days where I just wanna be fun and experiment with my makeup. I don't have another palette like this, so I can incorporate this into my collection beautifully and add more diversity to my looks.
