Whenever we hear a cover first, it’s quite natural to assume that the singer or singers were the first ones to sing that song. I’ve heard a lot of songs that I liked then later found out they were covers. There’s nothing wrong with loving the cover better than the original. It’s very common to have a stronger like for the one you heard first even if it was not the original song.

@@mildredpierce4506 The big one in this category is Jimi Hendrix version of All Along The Watchtower which was written and originally performed by Bob Dylan. Dylan of course had a folk-rock feel. Once Dylan heard Hendrix's cover he pretty much said that defined it forever and he considered it Jimi's song.

The Talking Heads version rocks it out and has a hint of mystery. Al's original is so groovy! I love how you can find the Reverend All Green even in is secular hits, so his hit L-O-V-E had lyrics like, "You can always depend on me to give you love... Love is a flower in my soul."

Oh yeah, "Big Mouth Billy Bass" was a hot selling item back in the day, with it's head and tail turning toward you and the voice singing "Take me to the river, put me in the water." Al Green (we should say the Rev. Al Green, he's a minister) was one of the later in the line of Southern soul singers that included Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Rufus Thomas. Al was a little different because he used finesse in his approach along with the grit. "Let's Stay Together" may be his best known song. Also check out "Sha-la-la-la-la" from his Al Green Explores Your Mind album.

Eva Cassidy does a version of this that is just fantastic. She can do all different styles (blues, jazz, rock, pop, gospel) so effortlessly. She never had a big record contract because she wanted to sing everything and they wanted to pigeon hole her to one style. Good for her that she didn't give in to them. Time to listen to more of this angelic artist.

Just a small sample of the Reverend Al Green baptizing the souls in his audience. There are a couple of songs that Al lays it all down for you to pick up your feet and dance to. My personal favorites include LOVER E AND HAPPINESS, The great swagger and smoking plea of LET'S GET MARRIED. The long version really breaks it down. And finally, the song made famous by the Temptations called I CAN'T GET CLOSE TO YOU. This song showcases that Al Green can match all five of Motown's best and take it to an entirely different level. I'm mot stating it's better, but it's damned good. Enjoy
