Thank you for making and posting this. I am saving it because as a person in Ohio, I want to plant things that help the world here. I am going to reference this a lot as I start to plant in my yard. (nothing but grass in there now but soon, no grass.)

Lovely family all round! Your mum and dad's gardening skills are truly inspirational, and wish more of your neighbors' yards could be as welcoming to the senses and to the ever-depleting wildlife and insect populations. I've native gardened in Massachusetts for the last 15 years, and it is the best decision I made in my life. The wondrous beauty of dragon flies, native bees (there are so many varieties!!), insects galore, birds, (including lots of hummingbirds), bunnies, deer, chipmunks, frogs, toads, snakes, etc that have made our yard their home is such a pleasure to be surrounded by. Yes, I include snakes, deer and bunnies that are unfairly maligned by many gardeners.

Your garden is beautiful! My husband has vegtable gardens on the property as well...we haven't had to do any real grocery shopping for 5 years now because I can and make fermented veggies as well.We also started a small orchard on the other side of the pond...haven't gotten any fruit yet but hopefully this year. Again, thank you for your inspiration!

You can extend the bloom time of coneflowers by planting pale coneflower and purple coneflower. Pale coneflower blooms 3-4 weeks before the purple one.

Your city garden is absolutely gorgeous! Being from Ohio it's hard to find videos and tips specific to our area. I recently moved and have a blank canvas to work with, but unlike my last home( where I had multiple native plants and butterfly gardens, several years invested). This new area I am in now is very damp with clay soil. I don't know where to start.

Rose of sharon isn't native. Or am I missing something. All searches shows its native to Asia.
@chriskline64885 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, many of the plants showcased are not Ohio natives. Zinnia, Rose of Sharon, Sedum, and probably the Cleome are introductions. Many of the plants she showcased from her backyard are native including the Joe Pye, Ironweed, and Butterflyweed. The USDA Plants database is a good source to check the provenance of different plant species.

I was going to comment same thing about Rose of Sharon, not only not native, but VERY invasive. Have them bordering all around the perimeter of my new yard and I am breaking my back trying to dig them out!

The Rose of Sharon is a type of hibiscus and is not native to Ohio. If one is looking for hibiscus that are native to Ohio, the crimsoneyed rosemallow and the halverdleaf rosemallow are native.

Beautiful, but not all "Native" plants....hibiscus/Rose of Sharon is from Asia/India. You could say "many natives plus plants I love". Love the coneflowers and the vegetable garden!
@cmlorenz Жыл бұрын
Why did you say that Rose of Sharon is native to the US? It’s Asian in origin and highly invasive in some regions
@RealBradMiller8 ай бұрын
Similar to forsythia, it has been here for so long, and does so well in colder areas. In subtropical places I didn't see it being available anywhere. Remember, we are on Ohio... The Bradford Pear is the plant I'm going after here locally! It escapes into the hills, shades out native plants, then breaks all to crap when an ice storm hits. 😂 Hope you have a great day!
