I will never understand how Dewey won Ohio in 1944 but then Truman won it in 1948

Truman over preformed expectations in the 1948 presidential election nationwide

It was very close both times. I think Truman being from Missouri and Dewey being from from New York probably played a role. Ohio is a Midwest state like Missouri

I believe part of it was that the Republican brand had been tarnished by what the GOP-controlled Congress did after taking power in the 1946 midterms.

Trump flipped so many former Republican rural counties that started voting Democrat with Clinton all the way through Obama back to the GOP.

Interesting how the northeast counties being so Republican (tied to them being settled by people from Connecticut, hence why they were Free Soil before that) sticks out right up until the New Deal.

The original swing state.
@ejkk9513 Жыл бұрын
No, the original swing state was Missouri. It voted for the winner from 1952-2004. It only voted for the loser twice in a century. Both Ohio and Missouri are now red states. Shame. I hate when there's slavish loyalty to one party on both sides. Just like the West and Northeast for the Republicans are no longer competitive. Competition helps reduce the extremists in both parties.

@@ejkk9513yeah Virginia Colorado New Mexico and New Hampshire are good examples for states becoming more extremist on the democratic side and Ohio Florida Iowa and Missouri are becoming more extremist on the republican side
@ejkk9513 Жыл бұрын
@Ryan-vi3ro I wouldn't put New Hampshire on that list. New Hampshire votes for Democrats on the federal level but tends to vote for Republicans on the state level. Currently, Republicans are in complete control of the state government. The best state when it comes to politics is neighboring Vermont. They don't care about party loyalty. They have a Republican governor. An independent senator. A Democratic senator. A progressive lieutenant governor. A Democratic legislature that has Republicans, independents, and libertarians. Vermont is the best, and I don't even live there. They vote for the person, not the party.

@@ejkk9513 well you may be right for New Hampshire and parts of Vermont but Vermont did vote for biden over trump who well wasnt too great and it was by a large margin
@ejkk9513 Жыл бұрын
@Ryan-vi3ro I wouldn't say Vermont doesn't count because it voted for Biden. Trump is an authoritarian disaster, and Biden is old. I choose Biden any day. Do I want him? Nope, but he's undoubtedly a better option. Just as Vermont voted for Biden by over 30 points, Oklahoma and West Virginia voted for Trump in every single county. Not a good look for those states. The slavish devotion isn't great, considering they only vote for Republicans on the state level as well.
