Yea.....This stuff sinks kind of like gold. I always find it laying on the base clay. Like gold would on bedrock. Even that effigy looking piece....was right at the base of a high bank....laying on the base clay. I think that is the only reason I saw it. Otherwise it would have been sunk down in the ground. To bad you cannot metal detect this stuff. I tried. In all metal mode it wont even give an iron grunt.

Could you explain what those weights were used for?
@rockscousteau Жыл бұрын
While the atl-atl is an effective working weapon system with just the main shaft, hook and spear, many atl-atls made in ancient times utilized a counter-balance weight attached at the center of the shaft. Weighted examples just "Work better". Weights came in various shapes and sizes and were made from various locally found materials. The method of attachment to the main shaft is the predominate difference between the various types of weights. While there are various styles that were tied directly to the main shaft, there were also those utilizing a drilled hole (perforation) in the center of the weight called bannerstones Even with all of the study that has been completed over the last one hundred years, the whole story behind some artifact types remains illusive, and bannerstones are one such group of artifact. Some artifacts, when professionally excavated, are found in such a way that their story is literally laid out around them, plain to see. A gorget or pendant found sitting on the chest of a skeletal remain is pretty good evidence that it was worn as an ornament around the neck. Conch shell ornaments found on either side of a skull is a good indication they were worn as ear decoration. A flint point found hafted into a fore-shaft is solid evidence it was used in conjunction with an atl-atl. Excavating and documenting such insitu finds is what has provided the collector with much of the knowledge we have about many of the artifacts we collect. There are certain types of artifacts however, that even though found insitu, only paint a partial picture of their whole story in ancient times. With the bannerstone group, it has been well documented that they have been found in association with other atlatl components, namely the atl-atl hook that was attached to the end of the spear thrower, and the atl-atl handle that was attached to the opposite end. When looking at the size of the drilled hole that perforates the middle of a bannerstone, it is not hard to draw the conclusion that the bannerstone was hafted to the center of the atlatl shaft between the hook and handle.

Amazon. They are industrial dishwasher trays. I started using one in 1995. I was working in a place washing dishes in college....and saw one....and thought.....damn....I am taking that home and using it as a sifter. HAHAHAH. They are industrial dishwasher trays for silverware. You will see the exact green one on there...and they have blue ones too that are decent. I like this green one best

@@indy5542 Yea......and get a metal detector too.....just look around and get something decent....that is like $200.00. You can get something decent on ebay for that or amazon. And you can use those sifters to find metal items....you can scoop the dirt into the sifter....and it is plastic....so you can detect over it and find the items EASILY.

It all seems to be laying on the hard pan.....base clay.....like gold would on bedrock.. It sinks down in the ground like that. The high purity hematite. It is heavy. Like lead.....I know where it is outcropping.....in creeks running into the river....in nodules. It is called "Kidney hematite" maybe I will go film some in raw form

I think you might be correct about those hematite pieces being atlatl weights. People always assume they are the fancy “banner stones” (I found a banded slate banner in 99 and showed it to Brad Lepper at the Ohio Historical Society and he said “Yep. That’s an atlatl weight!”) I don’t think they were using the super fancy banners as every day weights though. I think those hematite ones you have would be much more like the ones they’d use all the time. Great video Rocks. Best wishes from Central Ohio. 🫡❤️👍🏼👍🏼

The river banks here look 10 times bigger than last year. The beach at my spot is probably 50 feet right now. Great content Rocks, keep it up!
@rockscousteau Жыл бұрын
Oh wow!Its just been hammered here. The barges pulling into the shore have just pushed around tons of dirt and sand. In some place they have even pushed over trees. Which is eroding stuff out. i think that is what happened in this place. I think a barge pushed that up out of deep water. Then the waves washed it off.
@OldManMuskrat Жыл бұрын
@@rockscousteau It's too shallow here for them to get very close but I've seen it before. The water is lower below the Greenup Dam than I've seen it in years. I built a sifter today so I'll be on the river tomorrow when the sun comes up. I'm about to go see what you posted today. Stay hydrated.

@@rockscousteau in 14k years it's hard to guess what is out in that deep water towards the middle from all the erosion. I need an artifact dredge to find out.

Same here. I've always had a draw towards rocks. I know a little bit about them, but not a lot. I'll pick them up cause I like something about the way they look, or the way they feel.
