This is why college football is as big as it is here in the US. Professional football has NOTHING on college football when it comes to tradition and the sense of community. I love it because it allows a lot of these amateur players who’ll never make it to the pros a chance to experience that kind of atmosphere and share it with their families and communities. Most college football players will finish their education and go on to live normal lives but they can always look back on their college football days as that final portion of their lives where they were still athletes and possibly contributed to something special for their schools and cities.

@@OpusWon true but for every Bears v Packers in the NFL you have Ohio State-Michigan, Army-Navy, Texas-Oklahoma, Auburn-Alabama etc. Not saying NFL doesn’t have tradition but it doesnt have anything near the nationwide reach that college does. The Michigan vs Ohio rivalry goes back further than even the creation of football. The two state nearly went to war with each other in the 1830s over a border dispute before the federal government stepped in.
@nancysexton43642 жыл бұрын
Native Michigander and UofM alum here. As I understand it, there actually was a brief "war" and the feds did indeed step in. Since OH was a state and MI was still just a territory, the feds sided with OH but gave MI the upper peninsula as some sort of consolation prize -- thereby screwing WI (which was not yet a territory) in the process. Or so the story goes.
@chazmichaelmichaels882 жыл бұрын
@@nancysexton4364 Michigan had already claimed the upper peninsula, Ohio had no interest in it. So technically, Michigan was just given statehood and allowed to keep what theu claimed. They lost Toledo and nearly went bankrupt trying to support their militia there. So, Ohio clearly won. P.S. later on, the Lake Erier boundary was being disputed again, Michigan vs Ohio. Ohio won that as well.

There is so much copper and other rare metals in the area, there is over $2 billion in copper and $78 million in just one deposit that has yet to be mined. At one point the UP supplied nearly all of the copper used in the US. To be fair, Ohio didn't know about the scar running across the UP and down into the lower peninsula... but they absolutely took an L giving up trillions and trillions in rare metals. Another good rivalry game is Oklahoma - Texas, played on the “neutral” field in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. Almost equidistant between the two schools, the stadium is split at the 50-yard line with more or less an equal number of fans in each half of the bowl. It is also at the State Fair of Texas so there’s a festival atmosphere always. Back in the day, the night before the area in Dallas at Commerce and Main would be closed off as fans got lubed up and often very rowdy. Lots would be arrested, but in the morning if sober and unless they were charged with something serious, they would be released in time for the game.

Another great rivalry you should check out is the in state rivalry between Auburn and Alabama. Their regular season game every year is called the Iron Bowl and it's been known to tear families apart

That video is great. Both bands play at the game and the location does alternate between schools. When I was at OSU, I lived in the dorm IN the stadium... a dream come true. If you want to go to a big college game, this is THE biggest. The tickets are a hot commodity every year. O-H!

double post. i apologize for that. but upon re-re-watch 3:14 ... when the OBs see the stadium and take a breath... I appreciated that moment. I'm grateful. I know we can be arses. But theres something about sport that just transcends the normal BS we throw at each other every day.

Both marching bands are at the game! And from what I know and have seen. They’re actually decent friends. 😂😂

You guys should do the 2021 Michigan/Ohio State game highlights! They both were top 5 teams. OSU entered on a 8 year winning streak against Michigan.

I figured if there was ANYONE who could understand this, it would be our British cousins. Thank you for not treating this as, “silly.” The Game is one of the few defining aspects of being from the Midwest. L.A. and New York can have their glamor but these institutions are the cultural pivot that provide us with our orbits of cultural and geographic tradition. It’s a game… but it’s not a joke. I’m now in the south but don’t think for a moment-when I see a Michigan sweatshirt on some pedestrian going by… 400 miles away from the field of battle-I don’t scream, “Go Bucks” because I will. And I’m almost 40 years removed from my college days 😉 Cheers, mates

As a Raleigh resident, it’s all about collegiate basketball here in NC. Same spirit and atmosphere though. You definitely have both bands there. The home band gets the halftime show and other field time. The visiting band just stays in the stands.

Apple Bowl in Washington, Territorial Cup in Arizona, UCLA and USC in California. I could go on... and yes, marching bands do have rivalries. Basketball - I'm an Arizona fan, but North Carolina and Duke are gonna play in semifinals. If there's a derby in America...

The marching bands actually do travel for the game, so they’re both there.

I’m not Ohio St. fan but growing up in Ohio this rivalry is so important to the people of Ohio and Michigan. I’m actually University of North Carolina (I was born in NC) and our rivalry with Duke is just as big when it comes to college basketball. The best way to describe these rivalries reminds me of a book about UNC-Duke called To Hate Like This is To Be Happy Forever. I dislike my rivals so much but the sense of joy I get when we beat them is unmatched. Go Heels!!! Go to hell Duke.

Born and raised in Ohio. Every job and school has Ohio State, Michigan day where you rep your team and wear shirts and jerseys for the team you are going for. I live right by the border. And yeah I Lowkey got emotional watching it 😩. Big Ohio State fan here

I grew up in a diehard Fighting Irish household, and my dad hated the Michigan Wolverines with a passion. I remember watching him on game days pace around the living room, smoking his pipe and holding his Blue & Gold magazine crumpled up in his hand. He’s gone now, but I have inherited his Fighting Irish anxiety, and also hate the Wolverines. I have to. It’s a family tradition. There’s an amazing short documentary about the rivalry between Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Michigan Wolverines. It’s pure hatred on both sides! It truly would be so awesome if you watched it. It’s called “Onward Notre Dame: The Michigan Rivalry”. Come on guys…give it a look. Please! 😀

i don't even need to watch it, I lived it, as a Notre Dame fan!

@@johndessoye We went to the Stanford/ Notre Dame game this past season. The majority of Stanford’s stadium was filled with Notre Dame fans. Irish fans are truly the best! (In my humble opinion. I don’t want a bunch of ND haters yelling at me in all CAPS). Honestly, there’s just nothing better than college football with all its rivalries and traditions, and the ND/Michigan rivalry goes back to the 1880’s.

@@johanna0131 I was at the last game of the old Stanford Stadium. Brady Quinn won the game and i was allowed to take a piece of the field. MAGICAL! Shoutout to Matt and NIkki who were at the game with me. We rocked the stands!

@@johndessoye That’s awesome! I loved the Brady Quinn/Jeff Samardzija days! Still smarting from Coach Kelly’s abrupt departure, but hoping that Marcus Freeman is going to do well for them.

I grew up in Columbus and still here. It is a way of life here to grow up and love ohio state football. This was part of the HBO documentary of the rivalry, its a good watch if you get a chance.

If you want to get the full college football atmosphere, I'd do one of the following: OSU vs Michigan OSU vs Penn State ND vs USC (if the game is at ND) Auburn vs Alabama LSU vs Alabama Oklahoma vs Texas Georgie vs Florida There's obviously other games out there, but these are the biggest stadiums, the most iconic teams, and the craziest crowds. Notre Dame is coming to Columbus to play OSU this year (and vice versa next year). They are two icons of CFB that rarely ever play each other, especially in their home stadiums, so that could also be an interesting one.

Since youve watched this you have to watch one ofthe highlights to these games i recommend the 2021 game crowd was insane over 111,000 in attendance.

You see why the fan base is so huge for the schools though. Ohio State basically owns Ohio, a great football state, and draws recruits from all over the country. Because of their success and their alumni moving around, they are popular nationally as well. You blokes are helping them go international.

This is "THE GAME", nothing beats kicking your rival's butt!
@duhdoy082 жыл бұрын
Nothing beats THE GAME when everything is on the line for both schools! The iron bowl is good as is the red river showdown or fsu v Miami. But rarely do these rivalries have the implications THE GAME has had historically. The thing that makes the iron bowl so big is that the entire state of Alabama loses their freaking poop. The Ohio michigan war often pulls most of the big ten into it with half hating a good michigan team and most everyone hating ohio st. Plus this last Nov, nearly 16 million people tuned into fox to watch the game, probably more since that may not account for all the people watching bars and restaurants. If you ever make it to a michigan game and it's not ohio st., it needs to be michigan st and the battle for Paul bunyan.

To answer Office Bloke Mike's question: some of the football rivalries aren't called rivalries. They are called the Battle of/For something. Or in the case of Alabama vs. Tennessee. That game is known as the The Third Saturday in October because that is when it is played. But games like Texas vs Oklahoma are called the Red River Rivalry so it just varies. I hope this helps. Office Bloke Daz if you want USC vs UCLA is a big So Cal rivalry if you ever want to come let me know and I can get tickets for you to go
