Great reaction. As others have mentioned -- their Hollywood Blockbusters show is a must see. And for you guys, their performance at Wembley -- with a tribute to British rock. Texas A&M impressive -- but in a totally different way. And . . . for HBCU's -- Southern University's halftime show at LSU this past season was amazing. You would also enjoy -- Michigan's nighttime tribute to 9/11, with coordinated lights on every band member. Bands often travel to away games but not always. Usually 2 or 3 games per year, depending on distance and circumstances. There's enough time for both bands to perform at half time.

The band performs at every home game. The university provides money to get them to one away game during the regular season each year, and to any post-season games. The band will perform at a second or third away game during the regular season if a wealthy patron donates the money to pay for the transportation and lodging.

Most college marching bands in the U.S. are "show bands" and are all about entertainment at football halftime, parades, etc. OSU is one of the best, and there are many others that are great as well. Not only do they march and play at a very high level, they often are doing a new show every week / couple of weeks which makes it even more impressive. The other side of the sport is Drum Corps International (DCI). Drum Corps is brass, drums and color guard and each year the season usually runs from May through August. The corps each have one show they perform repeatedly while performing around the country leading up to the national championships in early August. Their skill level is much higher as it is only one show that they get to keep perfecting, something college bands don't have the luxury to do. Many college marching band members will march Drum Corps in the summer months. Both types of marching bands are amazing with lots of videos on KZbin.

Another style of marching bands is exemplified by Texas A&M University, who have one of the few remaining military bands (they are members of the Cadet Corps, which is part of ROTC, a military officer training program that goes back over 150 years). Marching bands originated as a military function, and the 'drum major' you find in these bands was originally an English military officer in command of the drum corps that keeps everyone marching in step. Starting in the early 1900s, college bands moved from the ROTC program to the music departments. But I digress. The TAMU band, the "Fightin' Texas Aggie Band," are not about show moves, but stress precision maneuvers. That sounds simple, but watch one of their shows (especially one with the signature Four Way Cross) and you will be amazed that what they do is even possible. The DCI program evolved from military-style band performances, but is now closer to the sort of show you see at the SuperBowl halftime-but especially considering that everyone (save one drum major) must be no older than 21 years, their work is separately amazing. Perhaps the biggest clue to their heritage is that hey still twirl rifles instead of batons.

College bands are active all year and the good ones tour, do holiday parades, and are at the schools’ various games and functions (usually in a paired-down group that is appropriate for the size of the venue). They do travel with the team to away games, but usually with a smaller contingent in the stadium. P.S. Kinda wished they did the part where co-pilot “Goose” cracked his gourd! RIP, Goose! 🥴

I was in high school marching band, and the OSU band always impressed me. Technically the highest level is drum Corp. the big difference is it’s just drums and brass instruments so no woodwinds like flutes, saxophones, clarinets. That also means it’s loud af. During pre-game for Ohio State games the band forms a script OHIO. After forming the Ohio (incursive) one of the tuba players comes sprinting out to dot the "i." It's a big deal for senior tuba players. My old high school band director was part of the Ohio State band and got to dot the "i" twice. He said is was one of the best experiences from college for him.
@beragis3

My high school band director and college band directors were both also part of the Ohio State Marching band. Both were trumpet players also. During our summer band camps, were we would typically learn our fight song and the first three or so shows, as well as our competition show, we would often have OSU Band Members help including several Sousaphone Players who dotted the I. The Sousaphone is the name of the marching tuba, which the OSU Sousaphone player was adamant about mentioning and not to call it a tuba. I also learned from my college band director that during the 1970's when he was in the band that the OSU band director only used valve trombones, and not slide trombones for more precision in their turns, and to avoid collisions, but that was later reversed. My college band director called them abominations. It's a lot easier now choreograph the shows, thanks to computers. Back then a typical high school half time show had 4 to 6 pages of charts, with a complex show around 10. And those were simple. I can imagine how complex OSU and other college charts are.

Ohio State MB actually did a performance at Wembley Stadium you might like to see. It's well done. I believe the NFL invited them to be their halftime show. I'm not sure about Ohio, but most bands don't usually go to the "away games;" they do competitions, exhibitions, and of course parades with the Drum Major (kind of like a captain of the band) leading. If I remember correctly, Ohio learns their routines in two weeks. I was in my high school Colorguard (dancing with flags), so we marched with the band. Those were some of my best high school memories.

Oh boy, you think I've commented before!! You have hit my sweet spot! I was in the University of Connecticut (UConn) Marching Band for 4 years. Met my wife there and made most of my lifelong friends there. I also spent 4 years in the basketball pep bands and went to 4 NCAA Tournaments including 2 Women's Final Fours and 1 Men's Sweet Sixteen. So, the U.S. marching band experience, much like sports, is a wide-ranging one. You don't have quite as many opportunities for it as sports because it can be expensive for some communities and smaller schools just don't have the number of bodies to make it happen. Starting in high school, it will be very common to have a band come out for football and basketball games (to play songs and lead chants during pregame, halftime, and breaks in the action) and the schools with the resources will also field a marching band that, like this, will play a show at halftime. Also in high school but at the next level of time and resources, you have schools who will actually field competition marching bands. They will perform 10 to 12 minutes shows featuring a variety of different types of music (usually more artsy and lest pop-like) and tour their area playing about one competition per week with other schools in the area. Their performances will be graded by independent judges (usually out of 100) and they will be ranked. This leads often leads to an end of season regional championship and some will even gather for national championships (although different organizations sponsor different circuits and none of them are truly national or unified like you'll see with college-level NCAA sports championships). Since high school football is usually played on Friday nights, the marching band competitions will be held on Saturdays throughout the autumn. Lots of bands at all levels will also play at parades and local festivals throughout the year as time and resources allow. intriguing Now, in addition to performing at football games and other local and regional events, bands will perform what are called exhibition shows. Basically, they will either take bits and pieces from their halftime show routines or they will create an entirely separate show that is more artistic and in the style of competitive high school bands and perform as a kind of way to show off what they can really do. Either way, they will take their shows on the road and perform exhibitions either at other types of sporting events (NFL games, baseball games, etc) or at those high school competitions (usually while the judges are tabulating their scores and results). This gives a band things to do when the football team is off or at an away game that they didn't go to. They will also perform at what we call pep rallies; little events that get the fans hyped up before the games. To answer that question, yes, schools with the resources will send the marching band to away games. This is most often seen in the SEC who, as you've seen, has more money than God but teams that make bowl games (to be explained in another video or comment) and playoff games also will send their bands. When both bands are at a game, it's always special because there's always a band playing and, while there's usually cordiality between bands, there's always that extra edge to playing opposite an opposing bands that both bands always get that much more juiced up to play and are usually at their best. No, the average person usually can't tell if one individual messes up (especially for bands this big or bigger) but when they can, something has probably gone TERRIBLY wrong. My wife has a fantastic story about one kid falling over during this particularly complicated and tight drill form her drum corps were executing and half the group toppled over as well; it was like a 10-car pile up on the motorway. Unfortunately, this was a regional show in 1998 and if there was any video of it, I doubt it has survived and is likely not on the internet. Finally, if you really want to make another marching band reaction video, find a video about marching bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). They don't have the fancy drill or marching precision as an Ohio State or Texas A&M (although, yeah, you should probably watch them too; they have a more military style because their band is a part of the school's military cadet corps but their drill is so tight, you wonder how they pull it off) but for pure entertainment value and volume, HBCUs are the best. Here's an example but I'm sure there's plenty out there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4m0haynrKiGirc Cheers boys and keep the vids coming!

My high school competed in those band competitions (after I graduated though). I used to go to them with my mom - couple of my cousins were in the band plus we were both band junkies. Usually about 6 bands attended, and the host band provided the entertainment while the scores were tabulated etc. They were loads of fun and always drew good crowds. These competitions really took some of the "geek" out of the equation because the bands were bringing home trophies so they gained some respect.

This was a great one with the volleyball. 3 other legendary performances are their tributes to video games, Hollywood blockbusters, and Michael Jackson. And their longtime tradition called “Script Ohio” is also a sight to behold. OSU is one of the best PWI marching bands you will see. For most college marching bands there is a new show every week or home game. Sometimes a band will perform at away games if the full band is brought. The band also performs at bowl games and championships. If you’re looking for more bands to watch I would suggest looking at the pregames for bands as those have the most fanfare and atmosphere. I suggest these “Script Ohio”, Michigan, Texas Aggie Band, LSU, Tennessee, and Penn State. Truly to encapsulate College Marching you NEED to see HBCU (Historically Black College or University) marching programs. It is an entirely different style and the two are NOT comparable. For these I suggest Jackson State, Southern (Human Jukebox), Grambling, and Florida AM (Marching 100)

We do this in college football. We learn how, and perform in High school and often middle school. We band kids are a strange bunch. We do this in the summer camp in the heat and everyday after school through NOv, Dec, when it gets cold. Fully knowing that most people are gone to the concession stands for grub. We do mess up, in high school one of my sections wasn't watching the drum major, the little guys directing from the sides and around, and we wound up way off by ourselves at finish. Man did we have a chewing out in band practice on Monday. Most of the time that's worked out by the time you go to university. So glad you liked it, most Americans barely notice our efforts! It's really common here and people just sorta expect it.

I love watching people from other parts of the world react to American matching bands because it seems like we’re possibly the only one who utilizes matching bands. I was in my junior high and high school band and people seem surprised that there are band combinations all over the country. I lived in South Georgia, very very south and my school hosted an annual event called the Southern Open and since we were the hosting school we couldn’t actually perform to win but we always had a kick but routine just for that event which we could perform just for the fun of it! Even though that was obviously on the high school level there were amazing performances by multiple schools every year. Most of our high school bands could have artistically competed with on the collegiate level except we only had about 200 players versus the colleges and universities 300+ typically. I think one of you might have mentioned, or ask if the band used different routines for every game and I don’t know osu very well but normally in high school the bands would learn and perform a new one every week for Friday night halftime. Another thing I’ve noticed is I’m not certain how long college halftimes are but on the high school level it was 12 minutes and both bands performed their routine during it but if we went over our allotted time the football team would be penalized. These OSU routines seem to be longer than anything we could do.

One thing you learn from this that isn't obvious here is that most of the time the band members are facing the audience and conductors, so those group movements involve sideways and backwards stepping, not just 'follow the other guy'.

This is my first time watching your channel. Great job. I am from the US living in the Midwest. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin so we are huge into college and professional sports. I prefer college sports as its more exciting. The people who are on the football team and marching band are usually on college scholarships so they get the education paid for by there activity. They do travel together when at away games too. Most students go then to college for 5 years instead of 4 years as this activity takes up so much time.

DN, I believe I recently saw you reacting to the show they did some years ago called "Hollywood Blockbuster Movies". If I'm wrong, you should. It's amazing!! Another classic is the tribute to Michael Jackson. I was just reminded via another group's review that, I'm sure, you'd enjoy watching: the show they did at Wembley Stadium. On another note, the music was able to be heard, but I for one couldn't hear a word the stadium announcer said. Although I was able to hear you 2, I had the volume turned up all the way.

Definitely check out some DCI shows they are 16-21 year olds most do march in college bands as well. Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Caveliers, Madison Scouts are great ones to check out. They rehears 10-14 hours a day in the hot, tour across the states in the Summer in competition with other corps. When my son was doing it 22 states in 77 days. Great experience and great shows.

Another great Ohio State University marching band half time performance was the tribute to video games. OSU is called the Best Damn Band in the Land. Thanks for the review! Im curious what the British do for football games (we know as soccer)? I saw a couple videos of popular chants and roasts - hilarious! :)

There are different styles of marching bands. Ohio State is the best at creating images. Texas A&M has a militaristic marching style. They are about straight lines (harder than it looks) and when the lines cross it is amazing. You can't really compare Texas A&M's four-way cross to Ohio State's Tribute to Michael Jackson but you should see them both.

Hi y'all! I was a member of the band from 2019-2022 and this was one of my favorite shows I ever marched. To answer some of your questions: No, there isn't really anything else the band does competition/performance wise other than a high school marching band competition that we host that we perform at the end of. For marching band competitions/showcases, it's mainly at the high school level and with Drum Corps International, which is the closest that marching band ever gets to a sport/competition, with different corps competing against each other at various competitions across the country. The band is just too busy during the season to do anything else, and yeah we do go to some away games! Normally at least 1 during the regular season, and then everything for the post season (Big Ten Championship, whatever bowl game OSU gets into, and then the National Championship if the team got there.) For the comment about the guys holding the tarps, those are our alternates! Basically every section has four alternates that can jump in to fill a spot if there's an emergency, so they shadow and learn the drill just in case, but normally they're there to help out with props. For every game/new show, whoever the alternates are challenge 4 marching members for their spot, and the 4 best of those 8 people earn spots for that performance. I don't think there's been a time where the entire band gets completely messed up (other than one instance in the 90's that we use to motivate us to never let that happen again), but there have been a few times where people fall/trip/forget where they are/whatever. The band's policy on that is that it's going to happen inevitably, but it's all about how quickly you get back up and get back into formation. In terms of other great performances we've done, our Rush and One Giant Leap shows are also among my favorites. Our pregame also has Script Ohio, which is absolutely what the band is most famous for.

Would you consider watching Indiana's band, the Marching Hundred? My stepbrother played in the Hundred when he was in college, on the mellophone (if you don't know what it is, think of it as a substitute for a French horn; mellophone is more common in marching bands, first because it's easier to tune and second because its "bell" faces forward while the French horn's faces to the side, so the formations are easier).

I know others have mentioned them, but some of the great marching bands are Southern University, Texas A&M, Michigan, and that’s about it. Don’t get me wrong. Almost every school has a great marching band and everybody in the marching band works incredibly hard. That being said, it’s very hard For most schools to have a band at the level of Ohio states. Some other great Ohio State marching band videos are my favorite the blockbuster movies performance, but also their performance at Wembley a few years back where they did a great tribute to British classic rock.
