I love finding these classic videos! Especially if they have the CSX C40-8Ws! That’s what I mainly watch these for in order to see their clean paint and K5H horns!

I remember seeing rio grande power in the late 80's early 90's as a kid watching trains in Lowellville ohio on the B&O main. Seeing that SD in this video brought the memories back! I wonder if CSX was borrowing engines from them at the time?

lol...nobody apparently noticed the SD40 "B" unit at 26:40. Buckeye Steel Castings at 30:56 made six wheel trucks for tenders and heavy duty flatcars. The CSX GP 30's have been modified. The rear radiators are missing.
@Zach_Bloomquist
@Zach_Bloomquist 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah the CSX GP30s you saw were turned into road slugs. They remove the engine and replace it with ballast to make a shell that only has a cab and traction motors, then it is mated with a GP40-2 or similar GP and used in transfer service.

What an absolute treat! I am from Toledo and my grandfather was a dispatcher for the NYC and PC and sometimes worked at Nasby tower. My father worked for PC, CR, and NS from 1969-2011 and at the time this was filmed was the Dearborn division signal dept. supervisor so was responsible for the pole line you see by the tower. The next year it was gone, replaced with fiber optics. I grew up just down the road from there with the Toledo Terminal track mere feet from my backyard fence so was tickled to see that NS train crossing the CR mainline on the Terminal which only moments before had passed my boyhood home where my mom still lived at the time! I cross over that Byrne Rd. bridge seen in several of the shots many times a week during work. Lastly, just FYI my brother is currently an engineer for the NS out of Mansfield, Ohio. Great video! Loved seeing the Chessie power especially! I was in the Army at Ft. Hood, Texas at this time so wasn't around to see Ohio rail action when this was filmed. Thank you!

Dan wish I was about 10 yrs older as I could've seen the old Toledo Div towers during the very late steam era before CTC was cut in during 1957. Neat that you have that family history.

When I worked for Conrail, I would pick up trains in nasby (289) siding and on my way to Detroit. I would also railfan this spot in the 1990's. Lots of photos of inside the tower, too.

Nice Treat to see old Columbus .. The trains through there now kinds suck! not many SD40's at all anymore... The best part of rail-fanning is seeing and hearing SD40s and GP38s and GP40s roaring up the mild grade out of Columbus.. These days with all of the new wide cabs that are so quiet .... rail-fanning becomes kinda boring...

Been a very long time since I've seen a locomotive still wearing Chessie colors. Not sure exactly how long it's been, but I remember as a kid CSX had parked one on the siding behind Waukesha Electric on the W&W sub in NC back in the 90s when my dad still worked there as a coil winder.

I did a ton of railfanning from 01-05 and saw a lot of variety still. C&NW, SP, BN, SF, Rio Grande, GT, IC, SOO, and even a Seaboard and Chessie unit in Toledo, Ohio! Now though I would have to agree. Most of the fallen flags have been painted or retired.

Was the Marion, Ohio depot moved, at one time, from it's original location, to a different spot at the diamonds? I read that a depot (which I can't remember) that sat at a set of diamonds, was relocated several years back.

No, it's still in the same spot. AC tower was moved in 1999 across the former Conrail tracks onto station property, though.
