A key focus of a Firewood business is to minimize your expenses. It pays to be frugal and avoid unecessary spending. I am a notorious penny pincher but follow an old "life lesson" about when it's a good idea to spend my hard earned cash. What is the Price of Peace? I have decided to spend a couple days making improvements to my trailer to, hopefully, avoid problems this winter during the fall selling season. I would rather spend $$ on inventory but some things need to be done!
The tarp kit I purchased is made by Buyers Product Company... They are from Ohio! They make all kinds of truck and towing accessories. You can do a vendor search on their web site here.

I failed to mention in my story that the trailer was loaded with a cord of wood. The tire that went flat was on the back axle and the tire was disintegrating driving on the rim. If I kept going that rim would have been damaged. I had to pull over.

I'm young and have no money, so I have 2 old trucks that I sell firewood with. One day I was pulling forward into an intersection and my u joint in my rear driveshaft exploded. I had to take my driveshaft out and finish the delivery in 4wd, using the front drive shaft. Removing a driveshaft in a busy intersection isnt fun lol. My other truck dumps, I bought it for $800. The price of peace was replacing power steering lines, brake lines, new brakes, new gas tank, welded up reinforced frame and dump bed. now for $1300 i have a workhorse. But its true, theres always an uneasy feeling driving something you don't know for sure is in its best condition.

Wow that's a nightmare of a story, glad you made it work... I had 2 near disasters, first was luck. As I was pulling out of my lot with 2 full cords of green oak in my dump trailer I broke a tie rod and my front 2 tires just turned inward. Imagine that happening at 65mph. Second was the same type of load doing 68mph in high traffic when my rear right tire on the trailer (duel axle) blew out. The trailer began fish tailing very violently. It took approx 1/10th of a mile to stop which really sucked.

This may just be semantics, but I think that you need to place a "value" on peace and then procure that value at the best possible price. I have recently retired from a career in telecommunications, networking and project management. One of the things that made me most successful was never being caught off guard. Your example of putting new tires on your trailer is a perfect way to show this. While you may still run over something or have a flat that you could not have foreseen, you have taken the step to eliminate the controllable problem due to lack of proper maintenance. The net will eliminate a piece of wood flying of and possibly causing damage to another vehicle, so another sound investment in problem elimination. I have always used a military analogy by saying a proper equipped and trained group of soldiers can take on any situation. Don't worry about the enemy, worry about yourself and the enemy doesn't matter. You're not spending money, you're equipping your business to grow and thrive while minimizing future problems.

Good morning Joe, another great insightful video. I hope you kept the best tire that was removed from the trailer. If you buy a rim and mount the spare on your trailer and carry a jack and a 4 way wheel wrench there’s a good chance you’ll never need it. Just a cheap insurance policy. All the best to your first baby heading off to College. I’m sure it’s a stressful time for you and your wife but all of our babies eventually spread their wings and learn to fly. All the best !!

What your doing is putting yourself in the best position for continued success.. It. is good to see you supporting a local tire shop that goes the extra mile for its customers . My advice to you would have been to go buy a new dump trailer, used prices are so high here , you could probably upgrade to a new 2021 with a tarp and spare for under 2000.00 . End of year write offs are always a good thing for a profiting business 👍. I heard you say you inflated the tires to 60 psi. I have several 6 lug axles (5200) and I do the same thing ,e range tires ,and I install the 80 psi metal valve stems and I run 70-75 psi in them. With a max load of 9-10000 on a pair of those axles anything less than 75 and I get a pretty big bulge ,which translates into heat....ESP if you’ll be doing more high speed towing on the highway loaded ,air up more.... I’ve had a few trailer tire failures in my younger days and no more ,like,you I replace them at 5yrs old,no china bombs,good tires only and upgrade the sidewalls to the next higher load range at the minimum one step. Very cute having your beautiful daughter model and promote your shirts!

It looks like you have the ez lube hubs on that trailer. Under that little rubber cap in the center of the hub is a grease fitting to pump new grease in to the wheel bearings. Running a lawn service I normally pump new grease in to the bearings at least once a year just for the pice of mind to keep from running the bearings dry and getting stuck out on the road with a problem way worse then a flat tire. I'm a penny pincher too Joe. I like to think I am wise about it, not penny wise and dollar foolish. For example my phone went bad recently. I got a nice used phone for 1/2 the price of a new one. There are sometimes when it makes sense to spend more money. Did you keep the old tires? They would be 3 good spares. You could get a wheel off amazon pretty cheap for a spare. I've had a trailer tire blow, on a car trailer loaded my tractor on it, on the interstate. The spare I had literally had no tread on it, but it got me to where I was going an back home. I carry a battery impact and keep a bottle jack in the trailers with tool boxes. I hope everything goes well for your daughter at college.

I feel the same way about peace of mind. I have learned the hard way also. I'm also very conscious about spending money. As my business grows I find naturally some of my employees feel the same way but most just don't care. They will waste resources, such as materials and time as if they just have no value. Sometimes it feels like running in water. To go 50% faster you'll have to spend 2 to 3 times amount of effort. You can see why so many people get nowhere in life and expect everything.

This went on for what seemed like an eternity, I was coasting the downside and easy up the hill as possible, then there it was a station and the price was ridiculous but I was never so happy to pay it, and I never pass a station with less than a half a tank on a road trip to save a few pennies. On a heavy loaded trailer you should replace your tires every 5 years regardless of what the tread looks like.

These tires seemed to wear faster than you would think. Firewood isn't that heavy compared to slag etc. Still I agree to keep the tires in good shape bc too much can go wrong. Joe

In our family run excavating/logging business, we have 5 trailers ranging from 1 ton to 50 ton capacity. We do buy some new tires, but we always turn the tread worn ones in to have them "Recapped". The savings is about 40% over the cost of new.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 4 жыл бұрын
That is a big savings for sure. At least for these light trailers the tires are reasonably priced but there are wide variances of make, and where you buy them. I am always looking for a deal but in this case this shop came thru big time for me. Easy choice. Joe

Joe, I'm going to tell you something, you are really on your own . Always. Be prepared for anything. The military guy was right. I had a 20 foot trailer and a 16 foot bed. The trailer rating is 6000 lbs. I had 2 spares, 2 jacks and 2 jack stands. Always. Always tie down my loads. FYI : daughter has more personality than you. Consider filming and her narrate. Yep switching jobs.

This is an Olde but a goody but rings even more true these days. There is so many cheap products and services out there these days and most people still don't learn. I don't know how many places we bid and loose that are literally a few bucks cheaper but don't do the quality or even the entire job. I'm about to order my Eastonmade 12-22 because even though I love my Super Split, Im not getting any younger and my Wife aged about 10 years when she saw the price but understands and supports me after she saw splitters only a few k cheaper but 1/3 of the quality.

I drove for Swift, We always had to have a spare tire up on the rack. No wheel, just the tire. Any service station, whether they have the inventory or not, can take your old wheel and mount your spare pretty quick. They even do it on the side of the road. Its not even a tire worth stealing, just good enough for another hundred miles. That's why you keep an old one when you buy new ones. Sometimes you can single out, take the wheel off and drive real slow on one axle.

Hello, The price? what is the price of driving down the road with your arms crossed? Instead of on the stering wheel at 10-2? But off the steering wheel all together? Yes you are right. Actions do speak louder then words. Hmm

Measure twice and cut once. You get what you pay for. Buy quality the first time and you will get many things that will be generational . expensive boots, jeans, jacket, socks, knives, guns (and accessories) tools and machines as well as alcohol and food. Know a good deal when you see one and don't be a snob but quality is peace of mind.

Yeah there's no doubt about yes spend the money on really good tires because if you don't you'll be sorry I had a 30-foot RV lemme tell you when I was trying to Baum's wet shredded boy that was a bad day I was fortunate and could get tires replace I had to put a full set on and it cost me almost $1,000 those trailers when they're running you got a load on them they need all the help they can get so the better the tire and a better the rating of better off you'll be in the long run it pays it pays for itself well when you don't have to be broke down alongside the road or in some RV park at have to have somebody come out and replace 🤠😎

You talked about your new firewood processing machine, and mentioned if you were younger, you could have probably did the production volume you were trying to do with just a chainsaw and splitter. While that may be true, how much more could you have done if you were younger AND had your processor? Not to mention the toll all those years of heavy lifting will take on your body. You don't want to be all beaten up and unable to play with the grand children down the road.

I don't know the technical reason but trailers are hard on tyres I think because they don't have shock absorbers. From my personal experience trailer tyres blister in the tread giving the feel of having a square wheel although that's easier to feel while driving with a single axle as opposed to a tandem. I was like you believing the cheapest tyre that lasted the longest was all I needed but then I bought a motor bike. Tyres and suspension are the two most important things on any car and critical on a motor bike because no matter what else you've done to it you are completely reliant on that small patch of rubber staying in contact with the road surface and gripping. Bike tyres are very different but the best I've heard is that all those little bits of rubber left behind on the road leave clean fresh rubber behind keeping the tyre working at its optimum grip level. Look at any motor sport whether it be four or two wheels the pit crews and drivers agonize over tyre selection because they need their tyres at optimum temperatures so that the old rubber is continually shed leaving fresh rubber for maximum grip. Many years ago now I saw a slow motion video of a side shot of the contact point of a bike tyre with the road surface with poorly tuned or worn out suspension. It was alarming how often and long the tyre of the bike wasn't in contact with the road surface.

I've watched this video 2 or 3 times and was just thinking about it and I remember what a older gentleman told me and he said that you are only as good as your equipment your working with he said you buy cheaper equipment it will not be as efficient and your down time for repairs will be high he said if you are serious about your future buy the best equipment you can find and do your research before buying anything for your business.
