As a german I appreciate the good work you put into the translation, plain translation is "easy", but keeping it poetic and even make it rhyme when at the same time keeping it close to the original in words and meaning.. that's some true talent to have and work to do. This song cuts me to the core. I’ve shed many of tears. Hearing this song made me want to get a guitar and sing this to my wife. There has been much trauma, depression that had been a burden. My wife of 30 years has loved me with mine, body and soul, yet the reflection of her looking at me I see sorrow and pain, that perhaps she would be better off and happier without me. I used to listen to Rammstein and similar bands (Finsterforst, Amon Amarth) as a young boy, up until i was 11. I got into bluegrass, then when i was 15, i got into country. Now im about to be 17, and i just began listening to this music again. "Ohne Dich" was always a favorite when i was listening to Rammstein, and for a while (even though it was before i began listening to it again), pretty relatable. This version, after just stumbling upon it looking for a video with English subtitles, almost had me crying. I wouldn’t say it’s THAT hard, but one absolutely has to be paying attention to the details and context of the words to hit the right meaning. Your language has some subtle permutations of words and word arrangements that it’s easy to miss, especially if you misunderstand the context or intended audience. But I suppose the same could be said of English. All languages have their subtleties and idiosyncrasies to them. Their are peculiarities in English that frankly don’t make any more sense to us than they make to non-native speakers. 😆 She did a great job of conveying the meaning and context of the verses with some gentle restructuring and rearranging to carry their emotional sentiments over to English. And where direct translation could lose some meaning, she was good about finding near neighbors to keep it. Like “Weh mir, oh weh” which throws me off a bit because I’ve seen it mean pain or woe, and the distinction (if any) still eludes me. But they can be considered synonyms in English, so the distinction doesn’t befoul the meaning. I’ve seen it elsewhere as “wehe mir, oh weh”, and I’m still not sure if that’s the same thing or changes the meaning. Nearest I’ve been able to tell is “wehe mir” means “woe is me”, and “weh mir” means “pain me”. I’ve no idea if that’s quite correct. The Devil is in the details in Deutsch. You’re a very detail oriented people. And don’t get me started on your dialects, that’s the bit that makes my head hurt. 😉 And I’ve noticed that Till absolutely loves to engage in wordplay and double entendres that can be real damn easy for a non-native Deutsch speaker to miss (because we don’t have the cultural context to recognize them). But it’s one of the brilliant things about him, I think. He’s always teaching me something.
